There is one small problem with this: The fact that the power supply starts, doesn't mean it actually works.

Just in case some of ya'll were still unclear on the exact pins, I have one of the EVGA "Detection Tools" he mentions right here in my hand (which functions the exact same as a paperclip) and therefore can indeed confirm: * it is indeed Pins [#3] -&- [#4] which are required for jumping* (that is, when facing it with the clip on top like shown in the video*)
--i.e. basically you just count over (towards the right, like reading English for instance) starting from the *left side* on the *top* row: over one (skip), over two (skip), over three spaces (put in one side of paperclip here!), and finally over four spaces (put the other side of paperclip in here!). Now, you should be good to go!
Hope that helps! I tried to be as descriptive as possible to hopefully avoid confusion!
    cheers,
    --Fred

I did just that (the paper clip test) last night with a NEW be quiet ! PSU from NEWEGG I took delivery on in the afternoon. No go, nothing. Also hooked it up to a test mobo. Nothing. So annoyed with NEWEGG, RMAing and having then refund my dough. 2nd time in 2 months they have sent me a completely useless product. They will no longer get my business. Bye bye NEWEGG. Went an orderd an EVGA from somewhere else.

@@C3lly Contact them via Chat as soon as possible and request an RMA/Return mailing slip you can print and stick on the box it came in to return it to them. Pack it up in the same box with air pouches it came with or packing peanuts or newspaper. They suck lately-as you can see above, sent me a NEW DEAD be quiet Pure Power 11. They had no more so demanded a refund which the jerks have been sitting on since getting my return 7/23/20 at 3:00 PM. I would not order another from them as they clearly are having issues with sending working components.

Sooo today I startes my PC or better, I tried but it wont start. I checked all the hardware and unplugged everything it didn't start. The last thing I checked was the PS. I searched for a method to test the PS and found your video. Thanks for the help. I tried what you said and the fan didn't rotate. So its the PS thats the problem, or at least it should be the problem right? My PC was working fine the other day, I played some demanding video games and today it suddenly didn't boot.
I ordered a new one, and it should be here by tomorrow. Is there any chance that the PS could have damaged any other hardware? I mean, I will find out tomorrow I guess ... but if the new PS is here, the PC should boot up again?

    • @DeerJerky
      @DeerJerky 2 года назад

Did it fix your PC after all? If you're still curious after 9 months, it's technically possible that a component could unpredictably have a transient spike in power draw (tiny and very short but tall spike) and blow the PSU, but that is what OPP and other protections in the PSU are built for

I'm experiencing something weird with my psu: when I leave the paperclip in, and switch off and on again (with the psu switch), the fans don't turn on again. So the paperclip test works the first time, but not after that.. does that mean my psu is broken? I'm experiencing issues where my mobo doesn't turn on when I press the power button of my pc. However, I found a hack that works: First switching off the psu, and then while keeping the power button pressed, switching on the psu. Only this way I can boot my pc now. Btw. the pc seems to be working fine apart from this.. all the voltage readings are also normal.

3:58 "I believe" def. want to use that... def. should've done some research before or after the video to be positive, especially workin for such a prestigious company such as EVGA

Why do the ppl make videos like this, not a real use, this is part of a psu test, you need a multimeter test.

Can you kindly explain how this test will assure a customer that the power supply is working correctly (Voltage Watts and AMPs)
The only thing this test does is activate the power supply but in NO WAY does it tell you anything else. A Power Supply can ignite but still not provide the correct voltages etc.
So Fully explain instead of giving incomplete information.

You need actual power testing equipment to determine that. This is just a basic function check BEFORE you hook everything up. It's still useful.

This was explained briefly in the video, but not explained in detail (to keep the video short). This power supply, as with other EVGA units, has both OVP (Over Voltage Protection) and UVP (Under Voltage Protection). That means that there is sense-circuity in the unit that is monitoring the output rails for correct voltage. They are tuned to reasonable tolerances to keep them from triggering constantly (random shutoffs). If the power supply is giving out incorrect voltage, the unit will not allow itself to power on, thus the fan will not spin and the test is still instructive. In that sense, there is a power supply tester built into the unit. The units are specifically engineered to not damage other system components and that is part of the reason that we are confident enough to back them with up to 10 year warranties. This test does not help in instances of shutdown under high load, but that requires dedicated electronic testers (like Chroma stations) which cost thousands of dollars. This small test is a good starting point if you have an EVGA power supply and your system does not power on at all (a low load scenario), or you want to make sure your unit works before starting a build. In short, if fan spins, the voltages are not in a dangerous range.

Speaking of briefly. There is a false sense of security here in providing this information and should have been highlighted at the beginning and the title.
This is not a test of the power supply as a whole, but a test to see if the trigger circuit is working and the unit is generating enough power to activate the fan.
