I am a reformed hoarder. My hoarding was rooted in financial concerns,& saving things from parents who died when I was young in the SAME week. When I gave up the notion of having roommates my hoarding shifted. It was overwhelming. I used to have a huge house with 5 roommates.. So I kept backup furniture, art work, linen, small tools, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, dressers, hangers..you name it. I first organized the stuff..2 storage units off-site, full basement, my entire house and garage and sheds. My rule was to get rid of 2 things a day...pillowcases, mirrors, magic markers, envelopes..anything. After 3 years I dwindled down to 5 things a week....books, pictures, small tools, hand towels...I no longer own a dresser, gave away 11 pieces of vintage furniture . I emptied 3/4 of my kitchen cabinets. Everything that I own would fit in 12 totes now...that includes tools clothes medicine chest dishes all Christmas decorations, blankets EVERYTHING. I moved into 500 square ft + 3/4 basement and a single car garage. 3 loong years, countless trips to donate..2 apt washing machines, 3 refrigerators/freezers..all free at the curb..It can be done. Videos like this one kept me going. THANK YOU.
Good job on the declutter! Just a thought.. if you turn the snake plant wooden stand upside down it would sit a bit lower and won't block the tv as much
I have a downstairs bathtub that we don’t use. I keep boxes in there and have been adding unused items to them. I’ve started seriously decluttering, and I’m amazed at how much I have. I donate most items to Vietnam Veterans; I donate towels and blankets to Petsmart for rescues; I donate extra toiletries to our hometown university (University of Central Florida). It’s such a nice feeling to help others with items we do not use.
I always keep a couple Amazon boxes in the basement for decluttering. I absolutely love to declutter. I started out going room by room, getting rid of everything we sent use, wear, or need. I then went through and made a home for everything we use/need. Now, I regularly go through and minimize whatever I can, when I can. If it needs a home, I make one. I love how minimizing and decluttering feels so freeing, light, and we have noticed that it is a lit easier to keep the house clean, with less things.
Where my issue lies is my ADHD. I have manic moments where I want to start a new project but then I have like 50 other projects I’ve been trying to do and they never get done. So then it results in a bunch of clutter. This was a great video, thank you for showing us the reality that no one is perfect and it is completely normal for homes to get out of wack sometimes. ❤
Watching this gave me so much motivation to tackle my own decluttering project! Your whole house declutter is so inspiring. Keep up the amazing work! 💪
I just found your channel. I love declutter videos. And we also have a small house with only one closet just like yours for all of our sheets, towels, blankets, hair and body care, medicine , bath and makeup and cleaning supplies! It’s hard to organize. I’m always looking for more creative ways to hack a small house with 6 people living here! We have one small coat closet and then three bedrooms with small closets besides the one I mentioned. But one of the bedrooms is not a bedroom for anyone so we use that closet for vacuum, broom and random bags and art. No pantry, one kitchen drawer and really strangely shaped cabinets in our small kitchen. Most of our food is in our basement on a shelf.
This is wonderful! Your voice is so pleasant and makes listening enjoyable. I appreciate your ideas and explanations- thank you. The creativity in utilizing small spaces, especially storage spaces, is evident and helpful. Keep up the good work- I am looking forward to what you do next! Good day!😃
I just have to say: your hair is sooo beautiful! If you feel like please share some of your favorite hair products with us! Your hair looks stunning 😍😍
As a crazy plant lady, you might need to move those plants closer to the window. If they don't get a lot of light you don't need to water as often. I usually water my snake plant once every 2 months and it's in pretty direct light. Direct light means they can see the sky, indirect is sometimes bright light like sunset is on them, and no light is like in a dark corner.
I am also thinking that soil might get too damp for a snake plant - they don’t like wet feet. But that kind of pot would be great for something like a fern that is picky about moisture!
Pothos and snake plants have been the easiest plants for me to take care of. I live to take clippings from the Pothos and make new plants. I’ve given away many as gifts.
Hello👋🏼🥰❣️. I’m a new subscriber!! Somehow I saw one of your earlier videos (from after Christmas I believe.. earlier this morning). Absolutely love love your videos! …and it’s exactly what I’m doing daily right now. Organizing and decluttering. So so needed. I thanked you in your other video, but I want to thank you again for giving me permission really to just get rid of things that no longer serve me. Your videos are just what I needed today to keep me motivated to continue on. I plan on sort of backtracking to watch your earlier videos. Thank you again 🥰👋🏼❣️
I would definitely like to declutter more often. Seems like I wait until something makes me, like a holiday or someone coming over. If I have a little more time I like to set up boxes for where those items are going like yard sale, donate, put away or throw away or honestly I won’t go back later and sort a bag of stuff. I love your “mother in law” plant. I don’t think I would order houseplants through the mail. I like to buy local and not spend so much. Aldi’s had these and other gorgeous houseplants for $15 last week.
This Easy Plant seems amazing. I also can't keep plants alive for anything. I really like the plant stand too. Curious if you can actually flip it around so that it is closer to your dresser and the pot is nestled more in the wood section? Hope that makes sense. For a tall plant it would sit lower is what I'm trying to ask about. :)
You should put labels on the totes so you know what is in them so you don't need to look in them it really helps to find stuff like me if my totes aren't labeled I forget what is in them and I've had some box food go bad and I've gotten 2 or 3 of the same thing because I couldn't find it because I forgot I had put it in a tote so labeling them dose help
Yes we’re planning on it! We need to go through them all first and get rid of stuff. Hopefully soon, it’s so hard to get down there together with kids and work schedules
Now after a break...Ill go through my stuff again..and again...yard tools, extra electric lawn mower,. planters, large tools..chain saw, extra tv s.. 4 out of 8 tv trays..circular saws. hedge clippers..It just doesn't end..
To save from having to go through all the stuff a second time, have multiple bags with you. When I'm decluttering an area, I have 3 bags/boxes ready. 1 for trash, 1 for recycling, 1 for donations. If I'm going through my kids toys, I grab an extra as a "quarantine". If they ask for something that got put in "quarantine" within a 30-60 day time frame, then we'll pull it out. But after the "quarantine" time, everything left gets donated. When I go through kids clothes, I have a tote ready to put clothes in storage until the next kid needs that size.
I’m new to your channel and this video got me up off my bottom and I actually got some organizing done this afternoon 😃👏👏😃 you motivated me to do so!! Tyvm 😉
Great video, Catherine. I always told my daughter when she was little, " You're lucky you are cute." I'm sure I will use the phrase again in a few years when she's a teenager 😂.
My kids call me a plant lady. I have had lots if snake plants. I would recommend very low water for snake plants. Perhaps every other month or every 2 months. Ive had snake plants go a full year without any water and live fine.
New here! Wanted to watch but saw the rubbish bags and was about to go. Glad you clarified early! Really don’t like watching people wasting everything that could be reused, rehomed, removed. Keeping watching!
Hi Catherine. Do you happen to have a link for the pink polar bear in Sutton’s room? My wife found one but yours seems to be much bigger than the one she found on Amazon. Thanks in advance.
I wish we had more donation spots, we have 2 maybe 3 and they have very selective hours, days, etc. But I certainly try. Im in the middle of part 1 declutter myself, and I am ready to get it gone. lol
Dawn.... put it all in a cardboard box with the word "FREE" on the open flaps, set it outside near a sidewalk or a busy traffic area nearby.... it will be gone within an hour or two!
One thing I do to minimize folding is that I hang all our shirts. In my opinion, they stay nicer on the hangers and I don't have to worry about my son (9 yo) trashing his drawers trying to find his "favorite" shirt.
I divide by …has a home so I put it away after separating doesn’t have a home so I assign one, donate goes into a bag or box or garbage directly into garbage or recycling
Just wondering why you don't save a lot of time by separating your discards into the different categories as your remove them? It is double work to go through the stuff twice. Time is to important to waste by handling things more than once.
I'm new to your channel. I want to ask a question. What do you do when your whole house is decluttered, you've gone through everything, there's nothing left to really look through? Everything is cleaned, vacuumed and mopped? How do you find stuff to film?
But it never stays that way because people live in the space and items are always coming into the house. My kids are young adults now but I can tell you, young kids are forever bringing in things from school etc. Plus they're constantly growing, so there's that ever-changing cycle of clothes that they've outgrown and ones that are put aside for the future. We won't even get into toys, books, puzzles, sports gear, art supplies and school related items😅 And, it's so easy to forget stuff that you've hidden away somewhere safely for 'the future, when they move up a size or two' ❤

10000% !!! My kids laundry is all just dumped in their drawers. I usually fold mine but it’s only because they wouldn’t fit well in my drawers otherwise.
Just be careful, snake plants like to dry out completely between watering. I water mine once every two months or so (and even less frequently during the winter). You risk rotting the roots if you keep the soil too damp. I treat mine like succulents and they are absolutely thriving 🤗
I stoped folding my kids clothes, except the baby. They would unfold the clothes when they put them away anyways so no I throw them in their baskets and they “fold” and put them away.
I’ve noticed since then it’s fully dried out but there is still water in the pot so I def think that the pot is designed perfectly for the snake plant and only giving it water when it needs it!
Real plants is much better than fake one. Snake plants is cactus so don’t like soil wet all the time. It could have root rot. Water when soil is dry completely.
I’ve noticed since filming this the soil is not damp and the planter is still full of water so I think that it’s only taking in the water it needs & not over watering!! So far so good!
I used to have a bunch of plants, but now I only have 3. I have cats, a dog and grandchildren so I have to make sure the plants are safe for all. I do know that a snake plant is not pet safe. I hope your cats don't jump on your dresser.
I am hoping to help others declutter their homes. But also decluttering is a journey. It doesn’t happen overnight. I am working at it each week to chip away

Label the ends of your totes with painters tape and write the size that’s in the totes to make it easier to find

You look absolutely fantastic Catherine!
