      @@JohanSegeborn Thanks for the demo Johan! am looking at a TS-75 w/15" speaker for sale in amazing cond near my home! Not real cheap but my tele won't let me sleep unless I check it out! These amps make for a great "doom" sound with the right pedals, would like to use it as a "special effects" sound on my songs! You ROCK Johan!

    Yorkville Sound / Traynor is by far the most underrated amp and gear company in the industry. I have a 1977 Traynor YGM3 that just kills it. No joke. This little 15 - 20 watt 1x12 combo does it ALL. Clean tones. Jaw dropping lead and crunchy tube rhythm sounds. Deep Peter Green style reverb. And swirly psychedelic tremolo. With a 1x12 extension cab (Orange) and a speaker upgrade with some simple mods this thing blows away amps costing 5x as much. No lie.

    Traynor is incredibly under rated as an amp company. I currently have a YCV 40 WR which is an absolutely killer tube amp, but this little TS 15 was my first amp when I was 12. I can still remember the day My dad and I brought it home. It had such a sweet distortion, up to that point I had only had old student amps which were lifeless and dead clean. This little amp made sure my obsession with guitars was lifelong.

  • @rlta04
    @rlta04 7 лет назад +2

    I actually still have this exact amp in my basement. It was my first amp . I bought it brand new when I first started guitar in late 70's. It was amazingly loud for little amp. Never seen many other people with one, even back then. makes me want to dig it out of storage and get re aquinted with it again years later. I guess as I got into tube amps this little guy got neglected.Very interesting and refreshing to actually find a nice video as this one demonstrating the amp so many years later.

    My number one inspiration for playing slow and clean! You sound soo good! Thanks for another superb vid!!

  • @wigon
    @wigon 7 лет назад +3

    Wow! That is a lovely rich distortion. As other said, much of the great sounds comes from your fingers, but when you do those nice beefy power chords, you can really hear a lot of great rich harmonics in the guitar sound that are just very very pleasant to listen to.
    What we can deduce from your videos is that long before tube modelling amps became fashionable, there were definitely plenty of fantastic solid state guitar amps out there with truly beautiful and rich distortion sounds that sadly got ignored by everyone except a few tone-savvy studio engineers and producers. The Marshall Lead-12 for example that you demonstrated so wonderfully, was an amp that I had known for years was in fact a "secret weapon" for many studios around the world. I'm sure this Tryanor was as well as I know many of their old tube amps were definitely widely used as studio amps. I use to own an old Traynor tube base amp (I forget the model but it was a combo with a 15" speaker) and I still kick myself for trading it for a bass guitar as it sounded amazing on guitar. :(..

  • @Tylermackenzie

    Man, I thought everyone knew how great these were. These Traynors are the foundation of the 90's Shellac/Jesus Lizard bass tone and are getting more expensive all the time. I have a Tronographic Rusty Box that emulates the preamp circuit. Cheap, small, and sounds fantastic. Although, like everyone always says, your playing could make anything sound killer. Love the channel man, keep doing you.

    This amp sounds awesome!!! Some solid state amps can sounds every bit as good as valve amps and this is certainly one of them! Also, I've watched quite a lot of your videos now and I'm very impressed with your playing! I love how you focus on rhythm playing, rather than the usual boring shredding that youtube is full of these days. Your lead playing is excellent too but there's an "old school" vibe about your rhythm playing that I really like. I love a good solo but for me, the often overlooked rhythm guitarist is the backbone of rock 'n' roll and blues. Well done sir! :)

    Great video. Traynor still makes great amps! Full disclosure, I live very close to the Traynor Factory but have no other connection with the company. A few years back, I found myself in the unusual situation of having a little surplus cash and decided that I was going to visit my local music store, play all of the amps and buy the one that sounded best. I played a couple of Oranges, a Mesa Mark V and Transatlantic, Fender Blues Junior, whatever was the hot Marshall at the time and a couple of Traynors. I left with a Traynor YCV40WR .

    I just picked up one of these for $50 based on Johan's video. Thanks Johan!!! It sounds great paired with my tele. I haven't tried it with anything else as of yet. One thing I noticed however is that the speakers look different. I'm not sure if it's a difference in when it was manufactured or if they are totally different Yorkville speakers. Either way it's a great little amp! I like my Vox Cambridge 15, which has a tube in the pre amp, I run through a homemade 1X12" Celestion Greenback cab, but this thing definitely gives it a run for it's money, especially in it's higher gain settings. Keep up the excellent videos Johan, look forward to seeing everything you post!

  • @johnb4024

    I don't know if it's been said, but Pete Traynor would test his amp heads by dropping them on the concrete from second floor of his building. All they would do is change the tubes and the head would fire up. He figured it was similar to the Head falling off a cabinet from the edge of a stage. They were built like tanks and the chassis wouldn't even crack.

    This brings back memories. When I was a teenager living near Toronto, these amps and their tube predecessors were everywhere. They were really inexpensive second hand. Traynor was what you used until you could afford a "good" amp. We never appreciated how good they were. Now I frequently scan Kijiji for the older tube powered Traynors. Great amps. There's a website called Velvet Black that has all sorts of info on the various Traynor models, history, etc. Worth checking out.

      JED TAYLOR not at all. they turned SS in the mid 70s. traynor amps started in toronto Canada. the first ones were loosely based on jtm/bassman circuits. there was the YBA1 45w el34.. YBA1-A 90w el34. yba2 20w ish 6v6. YBA3 i think 120/130w. and many more like the YSR1.. YRM1.. these last 2 had tremolo and reverb. then there was the traynor combos. the YGMs and so on. they made a head or combo that competed with anything at that time. from a jtm to a twin reverb to even a 4x10 super reverb equivalent. Traynors are the most underrated vintage tube amps of all time. they still make tube amps till this day.
      cheers

    Just goes to show no matter how offbeat you think an amp is Johan has probably demo'd it at some point. I have this amp and it cost less than a lot of boutique drive pedals and really gets some filthy tones. First thing I did was a small mod to add a speaker out jack (try at your own risk or take it to a tech) in the place of the hard-wired speaker wire so I can run it into a much bigger cabinet than the 8s that are in there. Gives the amp some more tonal options.

  • @kujibo
    @kujibo 5 лет назад

    Wow, shocked to see you plugging into one of these, but damn cool! My first amp was a bigger version of this with a few more controls. They were a dime a dozen as rental returns in our national music store in the early 80s in Canada so I bet lots of beginners started on them around here back then. Honestly thought it was pretty crap at the time and quickly moved on to a Hiwatt Custom 50. Many decades later I've always wished I still had the amp though just to see how it really sounds in light of playing experience. Also sold the Hiwatt and super regretted that, they are so expensive now and I miss it's tone very much.

    • @kujibo

      But just to come full circle my main guitar amp is a Traynor tube amp. My bass head is also a pretty beefy Traynor too. I do still have a Traynor BLOC80B solid state bass amp that was my first bass amp from about 1985. Not spectacular but was cheap and got me heard for those first few years playing bass. Us Canadians and our Traynors eh?

    +Johan Segeborn - Traynor makes a 50 watt tube combo called the YCV50. It's a Marshall killer with 3x 12ax7 and a pair of EL34s pushing a V30. They sell criminally cheap here in Canada on the used market. Definitely worth taking for a test drive !!

      Have that combo, but the YCS50 is really their best amp. I love mine even more than the YGM-3 or YBA-1 I still own(sold my Mark2 YBA-too freaking loud, and my YRM-1) The naming issue is also a problem for those who don't know Traynors. Pretty different tone out of the different models.

    The small combos are where its at for old Traynors. Try a YGM-3 guitar mate, or better yet a YBA-2 bassmate. Both are what I would consider the most outstanding examples of the Traynor sound. The Bass Mate has 3 very different circuits that were issued over a short period ('66 -> '70). This includes el84 and 6v6 models. The versions that use the second 12ax7a element in the preamp are the most guitar friendly. They fall somewhere between a Deluxe Reverb and a 20W Marshall Lead and bass, simlar to they way that a YGL-3 falls somewhere between a twin and a 100W plexi.
    Both the YGM-3 and YBA-2 combos are also loud examples that betray their wattages (20 -> 30W). Few drummers alive or dead would ever require a larger amp to keep up to them.

      Siddharth Karunakaran tone is better justified by being demonstrated with skill and experience. it's not as accurate to laying it on the fingers. truly it's the knowledge that drives experienced fingers but more than that .....mic placement as well as recording technique and gear selection associated with the amp. Johan knows what sounds great and may be more than a single recorded effort before the prefecture of the sound is brought to bare. but johan has practiced guitar to phrasing and very good play of examples he does. we and I include myself may not be fully aware of what efforts he takes in production of his artistry. each of us have what we know is very good tone. I would say that johan also knows. and how to bring the best tone out

    Hey Johan, pretty cool little amp for a solid-stater, have you ever thought about doing a video on the Peavey Renown 160 Watt solid-state combo amp?, I've got one but it's in a head cabinet, anyway, I've been able to get some pretty good clean and overdrive tones out of it after I made a new footswitch for it, my Renown amp is going through a 4 X 12 Ashton quad box that's loaded with four Celestion G12E Rocket 50's, works great, and the spring-reverb is pretty cool too.

      I got one a few weeks ago... dead but working now after resoldering the controls. It’s similar to the Classic , but different. It’s like a Bandit lead channel combined with a Special 130 normal channel, and they can be combined with the footswitch. The normal channel has the Paramid control too. Its really versatile yet sells really cheap. Crazy loud too, I’m sure you would like it! Oh, and Bandits are great but the Specials are Bandits on steroids. Cheers!
