Incredible resolution thanks to new lens mount design giving optimum distance to the sensor.
The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 STM IS macro was one of the first RF-mount lenses released back in 2018. You may argue that it is not among the most exciting lenses out there but it has a rare quality in today's mirrorless world - it is affordable at around 500USD/550EUR and we have even seen special sales quite a bit below that. Of course, a low price tag alone doesn't cut it yet. However, it is also very fast, provides macro capabilities down to an object magnification of 1:2 plus image stabilization. So is it the steal that it appears to be
The build quality is pretty good albeit the use of plastics is quite obvious. The inner lens tube moves slightly with the longest extension, about 2cm, at the minimum focus distance. The focus ring operates smoothly. Typical for most Canon RF lenses, it features an additional control ring that can be configured to serve various functions. Weather-sealing is not provided - probably a cost-cutting measure. The lens hood is an optional accessory that will set you short by another 50USD/EUR. It's probably not worth it because it's tiny really
The Canon lens uses a stepping motor (STM) for auto-focusing. On the EOS R, the AF speed is Ok but we won't describe it as quick. Unlike Canon's USM, the STM is also not noiseless but emits a high pitch sound during AF operations. Surprisingly, we had a few issues with AF accuracy which is usually a no-brainer on mirrorless cameras. Manual focusing works "by wire" thus you actually drive the AF motor when turning the focus ring. Full-time manual focusing remains, of course, possible.
The image stabilizer is rated at an efficiency of 5 f-stops. A bold claim but the system does come close.

hey there, the Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS STM is by far the best, most affordable native macro lens for the R5, R5c, R6, R7 or c70. I cant believe how amazing the Af and IS works on this lens.
Its freakishly good. Examples in the video. What do you all think of this lens? Is it something you own? Or would like to own? Great work Canon....
Just wanted to say I'm loving the Canon 35 macro on my Komodo, especially when operating a gimbal. It's super sharp. The one thing that annoys me is when the lens doesn't retract when shutting off the camera.
Not good for Disneyland rides
@@user-if4jg6ul9o hahahaaha....oh no
I tried even slow rides like small world and it took 30 seconds for it to focus again. Do you have any suggestions on how to focus on rides correctly?
@@user-if4jg6ul9o I gather that its the AF thats the issue.
I shot a very successful AD that had a scene on a rollercoaster, my advise would be, in a high vibration fast moving scenario like this, use manual focus.
I was so close to buying this lens. But since I own the RF 15-35 2.8, I actually am waiting for the RF 35 1.2/4 L lens to finally be released. 35mm is such a cool focal length for indoor videos and with 1.2 it could provide some powerful bokeh.
Thanks for sharing. Oh I totally agree about the F1.2 version in RF mount. That would be amazing.
One of my favorite lenses, does almost everything. Wish they would make a RF 25/28mm like this.
Oh I totally agree with you. Its a fabulous lens. And if Canon did release a RF 25-28 that would flesh out the Rf line nicely.
ha ha, more extreme closeups please! great info esp. all the issues/concerns!
thanks champ
Fantastic, the RF 35 f1.8 looks amazing
It really is!
Great Review Thanks
Great Job
Oh thanks champ
Thanks for this. I'm about to pull the trigger on this puppy for my Komodo.
Looks like you have made two great choices.
Slow stm motor = slow auto focus for video. Canon needs to make 1.8 primes that are good for video.
Hey there, did you see the examples in the video - they are at 120 fps. Then the camera moves in ECU - its was moving fast and the AF nailed it time over time.
But I also agree with you that Canon needs to do better and also fix their pricing structure.
It's annoying that Canon doesn't weather-seal all of its lenses.
Hi James, I totally agree with you. None of these lenses are cheap and with the Canon CPS program now being converted into a paid program, I also wish the lenses had better build quality. Still fantastic images though.
Idk why it’s impossible to find a RUclips vid of the R7 with this lens video test for ibis + IS 😒 good video nonetheless
Thanks mate, I made this way before the R7 release. Its a great value for money lens.
@@cinechimp I’m 👌🏾 this close from doing a super thanks for someone to do it 🤣
@@jashonharris do people even do super thanks......sadly I have never received one
Nice review. I am considering buying this lens for video for my R6. Will Rode VideoMic Go record the lens focus motor noise?
Great question, I think the Rode video mic go has pretty good mic isolation mount so you should be ok with that combo.
Thank you for the video. Do you think it’s worth considering buying a used Sigma 35mm ART 1.4? Will it have a better image? In price it is equal to the new RF 35mm 1.8. So I wondered if it was worth using it for work? Everyone has their own opinion and is already confused
Yes I believe the sigma ART will have a better image, but what a better image is is also subjective.
just got this lens and the way it focuses and track faces is too slow on my R5C, i can't use it, what am i missing ?
Hmmm I believe the R5C has a different AF system from the standard R5 settings which I used to run my tests. Have you adjusted any settings in the camera? Changed the sensitivity of the Face tracker?
The lens works amazingly on my R5 with the factory settings and no adjustments as shown in the video....
@@cinechimp i've tried the speed and response settings but it does not help much. I think it's a firmware bug because the other lenses like my 24mm 1.4 EF focuses incredibly well and precisely. Maybe i should contact canon about that. Thank you so much for your answer, and thank you for all your videos, they've been answering so many of my questions on these canon cameras !
@@delarageaz Hey mate, oh no dramas. Yes if anything the Rf glass should work better than the EF glass for sure. If its still within the return purchase date, Id just send it back, get a refund and then buy another one...
I tried the r5 on some Disneyland rides and the lens took around 15 seconds to adjust.
It's the crappy stm motor. It's not the camera. Canon dropped the ball with their cheap primes by giving them the stm motor.
hi, is this good lens for gemstones photography with APS-C camera?
I think you would be better with the Canon 100 RF macro for that application
Why don't you buy a dedicated video camera like the Canon Vixia HF G60?
I own several dedicated professional video cameras. But only the C70 and R5/c have RF mount. The r5 has superior to both the R5c and the c70. Thats why I test with the r5.
The Canon Vixia HF G60 is a fixed zoomed lens consumer grade camera.
The work I do requires a different grade of cameras.
There is nothing wrong with the G60, it would be perfect for a travel doco, shooting news and family stuff. Looks like a great little all in one.
Hope that answers your question.
What's that camera cage?
Do you mean the camera robot? its an AXIIIO
@@cinechimp no
@6.18
Your Canon R camera cage, seems simple functional, biffy, square look camera cage
@@Hardik_P oh ok its a small rig cage for the EOS R/5. I wouldn't recommend it. It flexes a lot. It is not rigid at all. Plus part of the cage makes using the RF to EF VND adapter a pain to use because it blocks the filter from being removed. For slightly more money you could get a much better system from @Kondorblue. Their cage for the r5 C solves many of the issues that the small rig R system cages create. I don't have one, but the reviews seem to be overwhelmingly stellar.
What kind of camera slide do you use?
Hi there the camera slider I use is made by an Australian company named AXIIIO, and it is amazing. It can carry heavy payloads and they move exceptionally quickly. Could be the fastest slider on the market www.axiiio.com
@@cinechimp thanks! I heard you say it but appreciate the link to check it out. Cheers!
@@FreerMasons hey no worries - I really need to make a separate video on it - its incredible.
@@cinechimp id watch!
@@FreerMasonswell stay tuned it will happen one day!
Extremely slow autofocus during video. Very annoying
Have you tried changing your responsiveness settings?
@@cinechimp
I have now set Movie Servo AF Speed to Max (fast +2) and Movie Servo AF track sens to +3. On R6, they are the first two settings are under AF group, page #3 and setting them to Max has made some improvement in AutoFocus speed.
In video, STM motor generally have slower auto focus speed compared to that of an USM motor, hence one of the reasons for the huge price difference.
@CineChimp, I really appreciate your feedback. Thank you.
