  • An audience member asks about the role of therapy in the show. Actor Tony Shaloub (Adrian Monk) says the sessions are a way to tell more about the character's back story. Series co-creator/executive producer David Hoberman talks about his own process and how therapy helps sufferers to tolerate the disorder.

Thanks for sharing this. This is great to see that other therapists think that Monk is good group therapy.

There's a lot of coughing going on here 😷

True, I've watched a few other clips and it seems like every time Tony and some of the other people speak, they struggle to go a few words without needing to cough, clear their throat, catch their breath, or have a sip of water. Did they all catch a cold soon before this interview?

I love this show and these scenes. However, if this were the real world Dr. Kroeger would have to be an incredibly incompetent therapist for Monk to have made practically no progress in 8 years.

Dony Christie obviously you haven't watched the show as a whole. The progress isn't immediate. It is subtle and progressive.

Dony Christie monk couldn't even leave the house, have a conversation or even really live. Dr. Kroger made with him and Sharona the first steps back into life and world. How can you say there was almost no progress? What does Dr. Bell? No big deal. Most of the time he is just there. Every progress after Dr. Kroger was done by Monk on his own.

Lina Kamergi you're right, besides that monk had anyway a really hard life. Think about his childhood and his problems with school, family, friends and people. He really adored Trudy. She was his life.

      A bit late but
Actual therapy for regressed patients can take decades. Hopefully therapy won’t be as long, but the progress made in the show is extremely accelerated given he doesn’t take any medication. A person with that severe of OCD would not make the progress Monk did in the show in the time he had.
