  • Here is another build of mine that I touched up since originally building it in the mid 90's. This is a 1970 Dodge Super Bee!

    I was 20 in 1976. My best friend at the time bought a '70 Coronet R/T in B5 blue with a black interior, standard 440 with A727 automatic and 3.23 Sure Grip rear. It had the Ramcharger hood and the deluxe Mopar wheels (not Magnum). He kept it mostly stock except for adding headers and exhaust. Very strong runner. My daily then was a '67 Cyclone GT. I had a fresh 410 with a mild cam and 3-2V intake which replaced the original 390. C6 automatic and a 3.25 Trak-Lok 9-inch. Both ran pretty much neck-to-neck. We actually drove each other's cars quite often. They were a blast.
    OK, here comes the "weird" part. We both noticed that the Dodge was less bothered with added weight than the Mercury. Extra passengers, heavy crap in the trunks, sometimes both. The 440 always seemed to accelerate the same despite the 410 having a longer stroke and slowing down from the poundage. We had no answer for this peculiarity then. But years later (90's) I was reading some technical Mopar engineering books that mentioned the designers of the B/RB format deliberately lengthened the connecting rods (rod/stroke ratio) to achieved this "attribute" of a widened torque curve. Well, whaddya know. We were not hallucinating after all.
    My friend eventually sold his car. I've been unable to find a '70 Coronet R/T like his to park next to my '70 Road Runner, but there's always tomorrow...

      @TheMuscleCarModeler  2 года назад +1

      Yes I read that also about the rod ratio and other engine theory’s. It’s interesting that the force applied to the crank is in proportion to the length of the rod, diameter of the piston and stroke of crank. But the longer the rod and farther the stroke has a adverse affect on HP numbers and max RPM, so great for torque but not HP. So many compromises in engine design.

    A favorite model of mine! The front end is either love it or hate it- I love it! I have two of these kits in my collection, one is still in the shrink wrap. My brother is fortunate to own a real one. His is one of the 2dr post cars, black inside and out, 383 w/column shift automatic, white C-stripe, and N96 Ramcharger hood (factory). It's currently undergoing restoration. At one time he owned an FK5 Burnt Orange '70 Super Bee, 383/auto- also with the burnt orange interior! That one he sold before resto. Thanks for your great videos- I love how you explain the fine details about "correctness" on your musclecar builds!

    I was just last night talking to a buddy of mine about this kit, and how Ertl really changed things up when they took over. Mine’s Sub Lime with a white interior and C stripes stolen from the pro-street kit. If memory serves, it took 2 sets of them, because one of the bees is backwards.

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  2 года назад

      I remember the bumble bee stripe had that problem on both this kit and the Monogram 69 kit. The C stripes had the bee's facing forward that I remember.

      That must be what I’m thinking about, then. One of them had a backward bee.

    I built the pro street version in the mid 90's when I was a teenager. Bright yellow, big tunnel ram, huge steamroller Micky Thompsons on the rear. Looks like you can still see the cut out hole telegraph in the close up of the hood.

      @@TheMuscleCarModeler I never liked how that would happen. Wish they would make 2 hoods in that case. Could it be fixed with a spot of filler? Either way she's a beaut. Gotta love the Mopar muscle!

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  2 года назад +1

      Now, I prime and sand flat and it usually disappears. Something I learned on the way. I have also filled the back side to make it stronger but that doesn't really seem to make a difference.

    Thank you for showing this unique model! Its really iconic for this car being plum crazy with a white interior. As always, this is a very beautifully built model. I have the original MPC 70 Super Bee that is molded in white , has a pitchfork hood and comes with the optional Street Freaks high- rise suspension that was popular back in the day. Its in pieces with its paint already stripped ready for an easy restoration. The 70 Super Bee was a car that stood out from the rest of the Mopar line up. Very interesting car!

      Yes. I like to restore the old annuals as you have seen. I have not aggressively looked for one and since I have the hoods in resin. I haven't tried to find one and one has not landed in my lap either. Many find their way to me but usually after I buy one. Then end up with a few.

    I know this is a year old video but the new rerelease is labeled as a MPC and it’s the kit bash just like this one but with a big decal sheet and it didn’t come with them white swoopey side decals so I’m doing a FM3 panther pink with the black decals like those. For some reason the hood scoops has a round knob on the top of them towards the front

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
      @TheMuscleCarModeler  10 месяцев назад +1

      I know the new one is labeled MPC. It's kind of funny but MPC was born from AMT as some people left and formed MPC in 1968. Some 1967 AMT models (67 Chevy truck and 67 Barracuda come to mind). The 68 updated kits were in MPC boxes. But in 81 ERTL bought AMT then in 85 ERTL buys MPC putting both under one owner. All of these have been sold to different owners since but have remained together and currently Round2 owns them. The kit really hasn't changed since then. My kit did not have the C stripes originally and also had the bumps on the top of the scoops. I sanded them off.

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler

      Thank you! Very cool! Many of the Mopars seemed to hook up well. Some did that but only spinning the tires. My friends 67 Mustang with a 302 and my brothers 73 Javelin 360 both would just spin the tires and go nowhere.

    I just built the AMT Ertl kit . I noticed the extra parts like the dash were from a Roadrunner. its from 93 . It goes together really good for a old kit. I used tape to mask grill and chrome came off on the tape that was a bummer.

    One of the stories from way back in the car club scene was the Super Bee's base model was used as a taxi so that had the trickle down effect on the Super Bee when it came to the public's interest. It's said that they didn't want a hopped up taxi. But this is just speculation as there's no real evidence that it is true.

    • @TheMuscleCarModeler
