Another good historical comparison to the Galactic Empire is the Roman Empire. Rome was a Republic for 5 centuries, then a civil war broke out. And Octavian, the leader of the winning side reorganized the Republic into an Empire and was declared it's Emperor by the Senate. They then went on to conquer much of the known world. Sound familiar?

Actually, it was the Civil War after the First Triumvirate broke, Grassus, Ceasar, and Pompei. Ceasar was already on the lead to make the move for the First Dictatorship. Well he was the Dictator.
Also Octavian was never declared Emperor nor did he ever consider himself as Emperor of Rome, not even King because of the Tragedy of Sulla the Old.
Octavian was declared Princeps, the First Son of the Republic, and as Augustus the Illustrious.

Republic for most of its history was constantly at war with other states, it was only in the last 1000 years before Clone Wars that republic was in a state of stagnation and peace, and even much of the old tech was lost in that time.

A common criticism of the Empire is that they’re too evil, but looking at actual history their extreme (and often detrimental) cruelty is sadly not unprecedented. Reading about the beliefs, crimes, and goals of the Nazis is chilling in just how sinister they were

    • @madmoblin
      @madmoblin 3 года назад +46

@@TheRogueOneYT I think it is better to judge actions on their own rather than compare them. The debate over if Hitler or Stalin killed more people disgusts me because it’s trivialising human death and suffering.
The allies were no saints, the UK and France were rich from Imperial conquest and did little to help the Poles and nothing for the Czechs. The US was deeply and systematically segregated and actually inspired some of the Nazi’s racial policies. And of course the Soviet Union was a dictatorship of equivalent oppression and repression to the Fascist regimes, and they divided Europe into spheres of influence and supported the Axises until they were invaded.
Despite all this, something unique to German Nazism was their overt worship of war and conquest, and most infamously how the regime used its own resources and men, even as they were loosing the war, to purge the impure. Germany’s goal was the complete and utter annihilation of the Jewish, Slavic, Roma, and other peoples. It was to them a seperate war, one which the perpetrators took glee of not just killing men, but stripping them of their dignity, possessions, public humiliation, separating families for the sole purpose of destroying their moral, forcing people to labour to their death, sometimes the labour wasn’t even practical and only existed to be done by the Jews. Women and children were not spared, they were the first to die for their lack of use as slaves.
I think it’s unfair to say one tyrant is worse than another when so many people have been slain, but the Holocaust is unequivocally a unique and horrific event. An industry that produced death. There was no strategic or pragmatic goal in it, the death was not a means to an end but the intended end in of itself. This was done willingly and even gleefully, there were those uncomfortable with the horrors, but they were allowed to look the other way and do something else. No one was just “following orders”, everyone in the camps knew what they were doing and why.
Any hate crime or state repression is no better than this in effect, but there’s just something horrifying about the Nazis to me. There’s no deeper goal to the beliefs, capitalism and communism at least have moral justifications, upwards mobility and the end of class conflict. The moral justification for Fascism is “we are superior and they are against us” it’s fuelled by hate and nothing more.

@@krispalermo8133 I think that's pretty disconnected from my point. In Europe there were wars across the contient against the Vatican including in modern Catholic majority countries like Hungary (who aren't German). Colonialism and classism are bad, and England and France have that history, but I don't think it it's because they're Germanic.

The fun fact is that Darth Vader and the Empire are more icons of the series than "the good guys". This isn't because people have a secret love for the Third Reich, but simply because authority and decision draws more attention than a bunch of "freedom" fighters in endless discussions and minor feuds after defeats in a meaningless planet. Also, these two aspects are absolutely what human societies do and have since before Sumer.

    • @TheRogueOneYT

@The Rogue One maybe. If the Empire' image could be attached to an unjust authority the rebels could at least be seen by the oppressed as "warriors of hope". However, my point is more about the rallying social nature of authority, iron fist and conquest (Napoleon comes to my mind when i mention these). Societies are always attracted to these. Even just reactions against unjust authorities require these aspects, because, assuming that the oppressor won't be replaced by another oppressor (which is rare following revolutions), the rebellious bands would break up in tiny factions engaged in 'endless discussions and minor feuds'...

I would say that the Deathstar was more comparable to German self propelled siege mortars, like the 60cm Karl Gerat self propelled mortar [which is a gun caliber you won't be able to find even on warships] and the larger 80cm Schwerer Gustav.
This is because, though nukes are more powerful, Nazi Germany didn't actually have them, and nukes weren't actual vehicles unlike the two examples I mentioned.
I would also say that the imperial walkers are also a show of WW2 German tank designers over complicating their vehicles and causing more flaws in them, such as the AT-AT, which was significantly armored but a good hit to the legs, which were somehow better than wheels which are simpler and more replacable, can render them useless, comparable to the German Tiger tanks which also had thick armor but horrible transmission, as well as German tanks in general not having many common parts, making repairs harder due to need for a specific this or that.

This was a very good and detailed video, it inspired me to make some Star Wars-themed opening crawls for WW2:
    A new war
Adolf Hitler has become the leader of Germany. For about six years, he has consolidated power for himself by enacting diabolical policies, increasing the strength of the German military, and taking over smaller neighboring countries.
The countries of Britain and France, after unsuccessfully using appeasement for both Austria and Czechoslovakia, have warned him that taking over another country meant war.
Meanwhile, Hitler, turning towards the east, notices that the country of Poland is splitting Germany into two, and he and the Nazis make plans for an invasion….
    The Axis strike back
The war is going badly for the Allied Powers. The Nazis have swept through the Benelux and France and are now making plans to spread towards the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
To the south, Hitler's ally, Mussolini of Italy, is making plans to increase Italian influence and control in Africa against the British in hopes of reuniting the Roman Empire.
Meanwhile in Asia, the empire of Japan, after having invaded much of China prior to the war, is making risky plans to attack and conquer Western-controlled colonies in Southeast Asia to gain more resources….
    Return of the Allies
The Soviet Union has successfully repelled the Nazi advance into Moscow and are now actively battling against them in the Caucasus to the south.
Meanwhile, the United States, having been unexpectedly attacked by the Japanese Empire, has now declared war on the Axis Powers, both in Asia and Europe.
With nearly the entire world engaged in this war at this point, the Allies are making plans for a combined counteroffensive to liberate the occupied regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa to restore peace and freedom to the world….(so much for that one lmao)

I have seen the Star Wars movies (originals and prequels) many, many times. They were my favorite movies when I first saw them about 12 years ago. But being 8 I didn’t get all the subtle (and not so subtle) mimicry of Hitler’s and the Nazi army’s rise to power. Recently my sister and I have watched the first six Star Wars movies and I just now realized all the many similarities between Palpatine and his army and Hitler and his army. For one obvious thing the bad guys that work on the ships and what not have uniforms that resemble Nazi uniforms greatly and the soldiers were called “stormtroopers”. Palpatine slowly coming to power and then just all of a sudden causing this world war to break out is ridiculously similar to Hitler’s rise to power. The fact that Palpatine was racist and went after the specifies he didn’t seem “worthy” to become Jedi’s or even live was extremely similar to Hitler going against anyone that he didn’t deem “worthy” mainly the Jews but many other people groups as well. Once I started putting all the similarities together I was shocked.

More or less the novels that come out during the 1990's pointed out the Republic just barely keep the systems from going to war by traditional senate debate but do to cultural difference and corporate strip mining and poor work conditions were brewing people into military action. War was going to happen any ways. Imperial surpression just kept things in check and then later united people against the Empire. When the New Republic was found, the different cultures no longer had a come enemy to unit against so they went back to their old feuds. Doesn't help when you have species that have life spans measure in centuries who can hold grudges for a inhuman long time.

Lol, the empire was as much nazi as it was American. Yeah there are political comparisons which are so on the nose it hurts but the empire was mainly based on the US military in Vietnam with nazi aestethic. Case in point, nazi Germany did not have many battleships other than the Bismarck and TIEs had a totally different function than Stukas - from Sturzkampf (Falling fight). TIEs were designed to overpower enemies in an aerial setting, not to fight ground troops as one hit would blow them apart.
