Big Bible Town was a failed, Christian MMORPG from 2010 to 2011. It was supposed to teach kids about the Bible while also channeling the energy of Club Penguin...it didn't succeed...

I was born in the mid 90s, so the first piece of Christian/Biblical entertainment media for kids that I ever saw as a kid was Dreamwork’s “The Prince Of Egypt”. It set my expectations so high that whenever I found new Christian media content I would always be left disappointed because I knew it could be so much better.

Turns out it was the subscription and kept changing my mom despite never playing it at home besides the one time in church. I remember the game crashing and then when it did or 15 minutes were up they would rotate out the kids and make them an account if the parents paid. They handed out weird fliers that were badly done. What kills me is that religious content doesn’t have to be bad. The Ten Commandments, Prince of Egypt, and The Seventh Seal are movies that heavily feature religion as a core tenant of their themes, design, and messaging, but they are still incredibly good when approaching them from a non-religious lense.
Even some shows for kids like Tales From the Book of Virtues, Veggie Tales, and Hanna-Barbera's The Greatest Adventure are really special and deserve recognition as good religious based shows.
As a non-religious person, I can tell you that the Bible is a fascinating book. It’s got stories of monsters, world ending floods, epic battles, stories of revenge, just everything you’d need to make outstanding television/movies. Just use what’s already there. You don’t need Kurt Cameron break dancing to be your only option for religious storytelling.

Part of the reason VeggieTales I think was popular among even those that aren't religious is that they focused on the message of the Bible story more than the Bible part. For example, the story of Rack Shack and Benny they focused more on the part of the story of standing up for what is right even when everyone is against you, or Daniel in the Lion's Den, they focused more on being brave. I remember there was always a little part on the bottom of the DVD that says "A lesson in self-worth/A lesson in faith/A lesson in perserverance" etc. Granted it helped that they focused solely on Old Testament stories as opposed to the stories of Jesus.

The bible was actually super dark in a lot of places. Most kids are fed sugar coated versions of biblical stories rather than the actual ones and often times don't read the actual book for themselves until they're in their late teens or an adult. The bible is EXTREMELY thematically and literarily rich, so it's basically impossible for younger people to truely understand it. I was introduced to the majority of Bible stories through a graphic novel called "the action bible," which contained incredible art and highly condensed stories that kids could understand with a lot of the violence, carnage, and sex minimized. There were even a few spinoffs too that covered stories not contained in the final print of the "complete edition." I highly recommend it to basically any christain, young and old especially if you need to familiarize yourself with the general narritive of the bible.

    • @leetri
      @leetri 2 года назад

@@krimsonkatt Let's be real, the vast majority of Christians (adult or not) haven't actually read the bible. In America, 7% of the population have read the bible but 70% claim to be Christian. Nearly half of those 7% are atheists, which means that proportionally more atheists have read the bible than Christians (10% of atheists and 6% of Christians).

Could you imagine the show’s legacy if they showed vegetables praying to a picture of zucchini Jesus?

Noticeably between my babysitter and my family, anime was a no no and certain cartoons like Teen Titans and Justice League was not allowed. She didn't allow her kids to watch Pokemon or Digimon so I would sneak in cards , comics and manga so her sons could see them and they were always excited. My parents are much more open and knew that stuff did not taint me in anyway. I remember they first saw Bible man and they were like 🙄. I think they found Christian cartoons and shows to be campy.

Christian media is almost uniformly mediocre, shading into terrible - movies, music and games. I think there are two main reasons for this:
    1. It is derivative of mainstream media. Christians seem to have a need for popular media, but mainstream media is almost always demonized by Christian media and Christian preachers - I don't need to list the many "satanic panics," from D&D to Taylor Swift.
So, there is a call for experiences similar to mainstream media, but it needs to be "beyond reproach." This leads to a feedback loop, where the more Christians make derivative media the more Christians will promote it as an alternative to the mainstream, even if that media is mediocre and uninspired compared to the original mainstream content.
    2. There is a definite feeling within Christian media (most prominently Christian music) that artists should "put God first," which means eschewing virtuosity in favor of easily-digestible, low-effort work. Adam Neely explores this in his video on listening to music that you hate - which for him is Christian contemporary music.
Anyway, Christian media is consistently mediocre, and there are, sadly, reasons for that which boil down to economics.

Yes, with a "but." Many churches operate on tithes, but when it comes to Christian media like movies, games and music the motive is profit.
The vast majority of Christian media is not tied to any particular church or even denomination, but is branded generally "Christian," making it available to the widest possible audience.
Since these things are not tied to any particular branch of Christianity or individual church, the name of the game in Christian media is not "tithes" but profit pure and simple.

You can tell it was made by someone who at least cared about story, it's like The Room how that movie is over the top and campy but at least Tommy Wisseau thought he was making the best movie he could and in those cases I can respect that more than someone who half-asses their universe or movie.

"When it comes to Christian content, it's Christian first, and then, maybe, quality next."
The same applies to any media created to push a particular narrative/ideology (religious or otherwise), as opposed to media driven by a sincere desire to entertain, inspire, inform, celebrate, persuade, provoke, etc. The latter type is still inevitably influenced by the creator's own convictions and experiences, but the media product itself has a life and identity of its own.

I was raised vaguely non-denominational Christian with some catholic or baptist or Methodist (and later Mormon) leanings depending on the side of the family we were hanging out with. I grew up watching Veggie Tales and Adventures from the Book of Virtues without even internalizing that they were Christian specific. I thought it was just the story they were telling, not that I was watching something that was essentially Christian propaganda, even if it was quality. Seeing how much other crappy Christian-centric shit has sprouted up in the last 20 years, I’m realizing that the best “Christian” media are the ones that include stories and people from all walks of life. Showing Christianity off as one of many, instead of as the Only.

I really wish that all parents learn that part of being a good parent is allowing your kids to think for themselves. & this includes with religion too.
I grew up Christian, went to church every Sunday, was involved in the church to some extent at least, & didn’t really interact with nonChristians. But because I was able to to think for myself I still became a pagan.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with being Christian. Just don’t force your beliefs down anyone’s throat & that goes double for children, especially your own.
Any religion can be beautiful or ugly, depending on how you go about it

In my opinion the absolute best part of our Religion classes in school is when they show us christian movies and stuff, like honestly, I couldn't stop laughing, they were so poorly made I thought they were parodies. So glad there are some actually good christian entertainment media like Veggietales and The Prince of Egypt but the things we were shown in class were just so so freaking hilarious ironically.

Dude, there was a series that we would watch at youth group, and it was an old cartoon that was actually pretty well made from what I remember, and my favorite episode was about the two titular kids testing out some scifi vr thing, which their grandpa or uncle or whatever made, and while climbing out and down, the boy hits his head and knocks himself out, and goes into a coma for a day, and the scifi tech thing makes him have these really dark dreams where he jumps to different realities and stories, and it was super cool and it tested his faith and made him realize how good he has it or something along those lines. I completely forgot the name of the series, but I will try to look for it, and see if you've heard of it.
Edit: the show was called Adventures in Odyssey, and the episode in question is called "Someone to Watch Over Me". I really liked the show despite not really liking a lot of other Christian content.

Yo Saber! First off what do you think of the film "Ten Commandments" from the 1950's?
But second and why I made this comment: there's a short that is uploaded on two parts called "Biblia: Teremtés" which is probably the most beautiful imagery and amazing retelling of the creation story I have ever seen. The film is in Hungarian (Teremtés means Creation/Genesis in Hungarian) and the videos have no captions so you got to know the story and rely on the visuals for this one. Personally, I love how they use a more realistic hieroglyphic style to make the characters, and a really good emphasis on a certain classical piece "Daphnis et Chloe 2" by Maurice Ravel to really tell the story. Something obscure I want you to check out because it actually is also borderline lost media, as it was the first episode of a series that was supposed to be a twelve part TV special about the Bible that was funded in America until production took to long and investor lost patience and quit production.
