Just did it and it went perfect, the other method it's very difficult if you have been using the shinai for a while. For me this one was the best option because my tsuka was also tearing a bit on the top part. Thanks!

Why not turn it inside out and then cut at the bottom (tsuka gashira)?

Great suggestion! You are right, there are a couple of ways to do this job (none more 'correct' than the other). Hopefully some people find this way easier as they won't need to turn the tsuka inside-out.
