  • Having the correct tsuka length on your shinai will ensure that you have the correct posture when striking a target. If you need to shorten the tsuka, this is how to do it.

Thank you for this. One of our beginners is a tall male, but a shattered right arm has left him with a couple cm difference in length versus the left.
We will try the shorter tsuka to help align his grip and posture.

The tsuka is a bit too long for most new shinais even before use and it lengthens more as you use them. I've taken measures to fix this issue and find it helpful with my balance, stance, and tenouchi.

Thank you Paul for the videos. I'd like to ask about the holes at the bottom of the tsuka-gawa. Are they ready-made or are you punching? And the purpose is to prevent the slipperiness?

On that shinai, that's the way it came. I don't know if they make much of a difference in terms of preventing slipperiness.

Hello and thank you really much for this infomative video. Today i tried your method 2 times but in both times the tsuka was to short. In your video you sayed that you have to shorten it for 1.5 inches, these are 3.3 - 3.8 cm. Is this correct?
If my new tsukas arrives i will try 2 cm maybe 2.5 cm. (no blaming just wanted to mention it)
    Greetings from Germany

Alexander Giesen It depends on how tall you are. I am 165 cm (about 5 foot 5) so I shorten it about 1 to 1.5 inches. If you are taller (or, more importantly, if your forearm is longer) then it should be less.

Paul Shin wow thanks for this quick answer! I am 165 cm too :) (short german^^) and now i measured my forearm, from the crock of my elbow to my indexfinger (straight) i have 36,8 cm length. Like i sayed next time i will try a little bit less cm.

Alexander Giesen Short kenshi of the world, unite! Yes, then shortening the tsuka should be useful for you. Let me know how it goes.

I enjoyed the video. I tried it because I needed it, but it came in any size I wanted. But the bottoms were smaller than the tops, so they were pulled down slightly when you wore them. Would it be okay to put on leather after soaking it in water?

Are you saying that you shortened the handle too much? And now you want to stretch it?

What size is right for me. There are different sizes. I'm 5'10"

If you're 5'10", you shouldn't need to shorten your tsuka. Just the standard length that the shinai comes with should be fine.
