Adam Savage Meets Gandalf's Sword Glamdring!

- Опубликовано: 3 июн 2024
- The work of Weta Workshop's master swordsmith Peter Lyon is unmistakable, and Adam is delighted to examine one of the Glamdring swords he made for Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. This production-made example of Gandalf's sword bears the hallmarks of Peter Lyon's blade design, as well as beautiful Elvish runes engraved on its hilt guard.

So jealous man!
*_Imo, this round of auctions at PS is too large; I have yet to get through the catalogue, there's too many things to bid on and chances are some auctions will pass one by, even if the pockets are lined._*
*_They should have saved 50% for a January auction._*
*_When at Weta, did you not tour the machine shop Adam? They have "a machine" I forget it's name and model, but it cuts swords "in no time". Meaning you can make an incredible sword-or prop sword-in no time, with no effort really._*
*_Most/all prop swords sold by Weta are made this way._*
*_Think of something in size of around 2 meter long, that's all the space that machine took up. And once cut, the swords can be tempered._*
*_This takes all the fun out of going hiking in the woods searching for meteorites to later toil and make your own magical sword; but that machine makes real swords, or cuts real swords._*
Adam. Get measurements for Tested "Full metal Glamdring" One-Day Build. LOL! That is one video I am willing to watch.
“I was given Glamdring, Gandalf’s sword… I stole other artifacts.”
-Ian McKellen, making of Return of the King
After The Hobbit - Well earned!
Mental image of Ian McKellan in costume loading up Gandalf's cart with stolen swag from the Weta props dept.
@@harbl99 I imagine the scene where he giggles with loads of fireworks in his arms 😂
@@The_Worst_Warlock LOL this is what I was thinking of too 😂
@@willparker8498 Pffth! "Gimli's actor" YOU go first sayeth John Rhys-Davies....Grrh bloody kids - online nowadays 😛
Very cool how both of them are educating each other
To anyone curious of what the runes on the cross guard say :Turgon, King of Gondolin, wields, has and holds the sword Gamdring, foe of Morgoth's realm, hammer to the Orcs." Turgon was the first welder of the blade and Morgoth was the Sauron's Master. The big enemy of the First Age of Middle-Earth. The events of the Lord of the Rings takes place in the Third Age.
Why was it in Runes and not Quenyan or Sindarin?
@@Eowyn3Pride Not sure. (speaking from complete arrogance of this type of craftsmanship) I'd wager that it was easier from a practical standpoint to add the runes than any elvish script. Though you'd have to ask WETA to know for sure haha
@@phoenixkingtheo I'm mistaken. Apparently it does or should have runes...I'm ashamed to admit my Tolkien-lore is rusty...
The LOTR prop blades are some of the finest ever made. They look real, yet belong in a fantasy world with Elves, Dwarves, and Wizards. Every element of those films were top notch. Props, costumes, and the casting.
They were made or at least designed by people who'd been making actual swords and armour for medieval fighting groups. So they knew how weapons and armour were meant to function.
yeah especially the Balrog, he usually doesn't accept roles.
It never seizes to amaze me Adams great enthusiasm. It’s so overwhelming that it literally pours forth from the screen and fills you with a warmth of wonder. 😀
I love watching Adam handle these props because he knows how to handle them properly and be excited by them. I would be too terrified of breaking something irreplaceable to enjoy it.
Before the Fellowship of the Ring first came out I attended an exhibition of props from the movies at a Casa Loma in Toronto and it was easy to look at them and believe that they were actual historical artifacts, that's how well they were made and presented.
I would not object to more lotr prop content!!!
Indeed!
Big props to Adam :)
I would encourage it in fact
"And here we have our collection of a billion furry feet!"
As long as it isn't Rings of Amazon
The lore behind Glamdring (Foe Hammer) is epic, made for Turgon, the Elvin king of Gondolin forged in the first age but lost after the fall of Gondolin during the war with Morgoth. Then found to become a champion blad during the war of the ring. In Middle Earth time it would be almost 10000 years old.
..erh? not a Kiwi are we?
Sorry mate but I’m an Ausie….
@@destructoau7526 There's the answer :-D
Thanks for the fun fact, LOTR has always been an incredibly detailed fantasy setting
Not interesting, but I admire your enthusiasm. Kiwi here.
The Foehammer. Made by elves of old, you couldn't ask for a better blade!
Of all the movie prop swords out there, I think I'd like Glamdring the most. As cool as it is on LotR, I remember reading The Hobbit for my 7th grade English class and being blown away and wanting Glamdring or Orcrist. Seeing it on-screen with the incomparable Ian McKellen as Gandalf was just fantastic.
It's also just a very pretty sword. Nice clean lines, elegant but fierce looking, it just has a lovely design. I only wish it too glowed blue in the films.
@@Lurklen Oh yea, for sure. I was disappointed it didn't. It would have also driven home how it and Sting are kin.
Yea, I also love that they made it look distinctive but functional and not some crazy looking fantasy weapon, but that is mostly true of the LotR trilogy in general (well, the for normal human/elf equipment anyway).
@@leonardoceballos1016 I never did understand why PJ didn't have Glamdring glow like Sting in the presence of orcs. That would've been great.
I keep looking at the Enterprise model in the back of these videos. Thanks for the great look at these props!
Me too. I think it's the Enterprise C isn't it?
@@psispace yes, it’s the Ambassador class Enterprise C, an interesting step between Excelsior class and Galaxy Class. (It’s been said that Excelsior class is just the Constitution class refit, but designed in Japan.)
@@joermnyc It's not. It's the Ambassador refit. Still beautiful though.
Congratulations on being able to be there and being able to see this in person. Thank you for sharing the video.
The timing of this video is impeccable. I'm in the process of modelling a full line of Middle Earth weapons to be modded into Blade and Sorcery, a VR game. I've been scouring for reference of actual accurate props from weta and peter lyon vs the knock offs that are prevalent. I'm currently in the middle of making Striders Sword and Adam your last video with Peter Lyon where you both made a blade and showed off the original Strider Sword was so incredibly useful from a reference point of view and now you've made this video of Glamdring. Thanks so much for the close up footage and b-roll.
Unless that's an official sort of thing, that may not be legal, and you could run into trouble especially if you try to sell it. The Tolkien Estate is also something that exists and might not like this.
@@daleglass7349 it's just video game modding, there's no action to be taken and no money to be made
Oh awesome! Blade&Sorcery is such an incredible framework to add to, and LotR swords are some of the best designs ever, I look forward to seeing your mod!💜
@@JainaSoloB312 some are already up:) sting, orcrist, borimirs sword, and sarumans staff
Wow the elvish on the hilt i'd never seen. Such a cool piece.
"Lovingly held and presented by Adam Savage", needs to be added to the provenance of these pieces 😆
That sword design is my ultimate favorite. So beautiful. I have prop at home
Honestly, seeing stuff come back through Prop Store is also one of my favorite things. I've been watching these videos since the start and I always peruse the catalogue. it's always a joy to see something come back through because it means the owner own and Prop Store turn a profit, and another fan gets a chance to be the next custodian of a piece instead of something just disappearing into the ether like so many props have in years past. Always makes me smile when I recognize something from a previous auction.
I took a look at the catalog for this upcoming auction that all these pieces are for, and there's so many incredible and gorgeous pieces going up. I just wish that I had the extra money to be able to participate in the auction
*as much fun as it would be to look at what will be in the auction my inner geek will not me to do so given the great amount of sadness that would wash over me at not being able to afford even the cheapest item*
Always great to see the Prop Store guys on this channel. Love it. And for my money that is the most beautiful film sword ever made.
I could listen to Stephen lane talk all day. His voice is so relaxing combined with Adam examining props. ASMR ALERT 😂
I have one of the numbered Glamdring Swords with a real sapphire on the cross guard. Numbered. Bought it like 10 years ago. It's beautiful, have it in a locked case hanging on the wall. My favorite LOTR sword. Adam is obviously just a kid in a man's body, like me.
So so so great to see more of Weta's work out in the wild. I hope to see something like this in person one day.
Design-wise, Glamdring is my favorite sword from any fantasy property. I love the distinctive blade shape. Beautiful, but _completely_ functional.
As cool as that sword is, I can't help but leave this video thinking "Adam got to Handle a Krull Glaive!"
Although they should have shown that scene in a lower res, with noise, like it was on VHS : -)
@@engineeredlifeform I'm old enough that I went to see Krull at the theatre in 1983, not on VHS - actually not just any theatre, the Civic in Auckland which is one of the great film palaces of the world. I was 8 years old - still remember it like it was yesterday.
@@Beer_Dad1975 I'm old enough to have seen it, but didn't. Not sure if it played in my town, or whether I just missed it. We had two single screen cinemas, that was it, so a film might play for a week, and that was your only opportunity. Town was five miles from home, so my friend and I used to walk, as public transport was crap and expensive. It could have been that we just weren't swayed by the trailer to make the trip, but picked it up as a rental out of curiosity.
@@engineeredlifeform I think the only reason I got to go was my Mum and my Aunt were both big into fantasy so anything like that we ended up going to (Labyrinth, Clash of the Titans etc)
Sounds a bit like how I discovered Blade Runner - was maybe 14 years old and had never heard of it but thought the VHS cover was interesting.
It’s crazy how heavy/real it looks when it’s made out of aluminum and plastic 😆
The subtle glow/bloom in this video is glorious!
The one thing I wouldn’t mind in a hypothetical George Lucas-style Special Edition of LotR would be adding a blue glow to Glamdring when orcs are present, since one of the audio commentaries mentioned they sorta kinda forgot about that…
Yes, in the lore/books it glowed the same as Sting does.
Actually doesn’t he say they left it out on purpose so the swords didn’t look like lightsabers?
I would love to see Adam make a working prop of Krull's throwing Glaive or even explain how that structure/ mechanism works?
*if not mistaken, i believe it was reviled that in the Krull Glaive blade sequence was accomplished using a very low tech means that being rubber bands on the opposite side of the prop*
@@scottmantooth8785 Your probably right. Still could be fun in Adam Savage style to see him tackle it.
@@aaronrossguernsey *absolutely*
I could just watch hours and hours of this. Better than anything on TV.
I clicked through probably 20 pages of the listings for that auction. HOLY SHIT! It's the most amazing collection of the best props. If I had the money I'd own all of it
this was so endearing
Great video Tested Team!
Totally bummed I missed out on getting a full size replica of Glamdring, it’s the best looking sword in the films. (The best piece of anything is the King’s chest piece armor, only because the actor revealed that the armorer even decorated the INSIDE of it, even though no one but the actors would see it (well until the behind the scenes extras on the extended edition). That kind of hidden detail always shows the dedication of the artists that make things for films and theater productions.
I want to say that was Theoden's armor they decorated so well. Weta puts every other prop shop to shame!
*really liked that bit of detail and reveal on the behind the scenes videos...and how much the actor loved that little detail*
You could bid on this haha. The bids in the auction are currently at £30,000
@@maxbowen6482 The winning bid was 262,500 pounds.
@@jamesrawlins735 the results of some of their auctions are absolutely mind blowing. The x wing model that Adam did a video on sold for nearly 2.4 million🤯
I’d be so excited to watch you make a replica of Glamdiring
Omg, the glave in your opening. You better show us that! Krull was a childhood favorite.
*agreed...an absolute must*
I love this series and the intro is great.
I've said this before...I'll say it again....Adam, you need to make the star from krull. I would love to see how you go through the process of making something so visually stunning, and technically challenging too. Love ya dude.
Absolutely crazy me and my uni class were there the week before you!! My personal favourites were the dr. Brand suit, hover boards and you can’t not talk about the huge silver surfer 😂 awesome to see that you were there a week apart.
Would you ever consider coming to see the Model making students at the University of Hertfordshire? a lot of us in our final year have been inspired by your work over the years and it would be absolutely amazing to show you what we work on and the processes we go through to make our props.
I was looking at this exact sword on prop store the other week, would kill for this
Dude, that was pretty epic. Adam was like a kid in a candy store 🤭😁
I'm quite amazed by that The Ghost costume in the back!
I really hope we see a video on the Glaive.
This one was very entertaining, although when it was mentioned about Sideshow making replicas they never did any lifesize swords; those were intially done by United Cutlery.Sideshow did sell a lot of WETA maquettes and then later other LOTR statues and figures; but no weapons.
Very cool! I own an official replica of this sword, and comparing mine to the one here, they look pretty much identical, minus the wear marks. Very nice to see an original though.
Lovely video ! ❤️💙
Adam you have a good heart. Thank you.
We need some movie reviews from Adam, he is one of the biggest movie nerds i know of and he is interested in all the behind the scenes stuff and researches it, be great content
Love that Enterprise C model in the background
Weta occasionally releases a limited edition of replicas of weapons from LotR, called the "Master Swordsmith's Collection," all made by Peter Lyon himself. They run anywhere from $5000-12000 USD, if memory serves. And in some cases they're made with even more expensive materials and techniques than the original props. On the original prop for Sting, for example, the elven vine around the grip was just a vinyl transfer; on the "Master Swordsmith" version, it's REAL silver worked into the wood. The latest one they released was Eowyn's sword (with a scabbard, too!), and it is just gorgeous!
Super nice piece
I’m going to be bidding on this sword in a few weeks, wish me luck !
I don't know why but I always love watching Adam geek out over something like this.
by the way one of my most favourite swords of all time. Such a beautifull blade :)
They should hire Adam to come through before each auction and get his download of all the details he has in his brain on all of the props
Was watching the trilogy recently thinking “wow” Owen Wilson voice, all the swords in these films rock !
Thanks for another epic insight
Did we have an episode on the Ambassador Class USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C model yet?
Peter Jackson and Weta have shown the world only a little piece of what our little country is capable of, the best is yet to come 😁much love from New Zealand
Literally Watching The two Towers As This Popped Up In my Feed!👌🏼😂
It’s beautiful and has an intimidating name. Glamdring is all bright and shiny, but the name translates to Foe-hammer which is glorious
Meanwhile I'm getting irrationally excited they've got the Ambassador-class model in the background there
Us too!
Anyone else geeking out over the Enterprise C in the backgroung? LOL
Stay tuned!
I mean the sword is freaking awesome. BUT I want that Ambassador class model that was behind you both 😅
Is that the the Krull movie "blade" / boomarang prop in the new intro?
Not going lie, that Billy Zane 'Phantom' costume in the background next to the "Schumacher Robin" costume worn by Chris O'Donnell had my full attention while watching yet another video of someone in the biz being excited about Weta reproductions from a movie set 20 years ago.
I'd rather hear the story behind that oddity of a rarity or any of the other rare or odd pieces. AS AMAZING as Glamdring is, I'm just saying I'd enjoy hearing more about the other pieces in this shot from the curator instead of something has mass produced replicas selling on Amazon.
I really miss the still untitled podcast especially the movie review episodes, hope it returns someday!
Yes yes, have your moment while we drool. Thanks for sharing.
Oh man I want to know about that USS Zhukov in the background.
I hope you guys did a video with the Enterprise C!
I saw that too. Would be neat for Adam to tie in his previous comments re: detailing philosophy for utopian vs dystopian societies.
ROtK Glamdring is in my top 5 props of all time, massively jealous.
It could have been yours for a measly 262,500 pounds....
The inscription on the handle says “Turgon, King of Gondolin, wields, has, and holds the sword Glamdring, Foe of Morgoth's realm, Hammer of the Orcs."
Two vids in one day!
Wonder if we’ll get more lord of the ring props
I would like to know more about the Ring Of Power weapons seeing Weta Workshop also created them.
Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!
Just saying the very name out loud gives me goosebumps.
Glamdring.
Hohoooo... *chuckles*
Anxiously awaiting the episode with the tauntaun…
Happy Halloween 🎃
I REAAAALLY hope you have a good look at the Freddie gloves
Make a video of making the leaf blade sword Adam!
I have one of replicas, wish I could find the scabbard for it at a decent price.
My favorite is the slave leia outfit in the background
I got to TOUCH Gandalf’s robe from the movies and see glamdring when they had the museum exhibits after the last movie was made!
I hope the 3-bladed sword from "Sword and the Sorcerer' comes. It was around the time of Krull...
NOW I’m jealous!🤩🤩🤩
"FOOL OF A TOOK!" What a great prop!
Thank you.
It looks so light and easy to handle!
The United Cutlery replicas are full steel, and their Glamdring weighs so much for a hand-and-a-half sword
I chose to make one of these out of wood for a school writing project.(oddly enough) I was only able to do so because the English teacher was also the play club manager, so we came to a deal. Because they needed a blunt wooden sword for the hobbit play.
Even though it was my first carpentry project, it didn’t actually matter because she enjoyed it all the same. Btw I got an A+ on the project without needing to write anything, or present anything. 😁
Slightly off-topic, but is that the NCC-1701-C Enterprise in the background...the Ambassador class?
Did I miss the video on that krull blade? Cuz that thing is fucking awesome
The glaive... Yeah.. Coolest thing about that movie.

I still have some of Peter's pre-LOTR swords!
What the hell?!?! That was a working Glaive from Krull! We need to see that!
Seeing or making Peter's sword from Narnia would be epic
Just checked the auction for this, it went for £262,500, I can't believe someone spent that much on this.
Got this hanging up in my hallway
If I had money, which I really don't, then I would love that sword. I would prefer a proper steel one though, because I always feel like if you are going to hang a sword on your wall, then you should be able to use that sword for the apocalypse. So, proper good steel, proper good hardening and so on. Still though, I would love the aluminium one anyway
The sword had an estimate of between 60 to 100k pounds - it ended up going for 262,500 pounds!
