  • My experience 2 days after surgery - hope it helps anyone recovering, or considering the surgery for themselves.
UPDATE 7/25/13: It's been just over a year (13.5 months) and I feel great. Started 3x week personal training to get back into shape as soon as the doc gave me the green light (3 months post op), and am back in shape and pain free. No meds since about 1-2 months post op. If I over do it in the gym, I will get a sensation on my low back and hamstring on that side - like a soreness, but not the nerve pain from before. All in all - all good stuff! Good luck, I hope you have a similar outcome.

Had mine 1 week ago. The only pain I am feeling is the surgical pain and a bit of leg pain, but 100% happy that I did it. Thanks for the post.

Had mine yesterday morning, the leg pain was so bad before. I can't believe how much better I feel. Woke up with no leg pain after surgery. I was crying tears of relief.
Had to fight to be seen, they almost gave me a cortisone shot. Thank God they didn't. Covid-19 almost canceled my surgery, I didn't have it but hospital was strained for resources. I got so lucky.

I had mine today at 7 a.m. Dealt with the terrible left butt/leg pain for 8 months. The pain is gone! Incision pain is very noticeable but who cares. That actually will heal on its own. I was able to walk 10 minutes tonight slowly and realized that was pushing it a bit so I have just stayed in the house mostly. I am 38 and have no idea how the herniation happened. Just noticed something like a pulled muscle that would come and go until one day it stayed and became a truly life changing pain. I have 0 sciatic pain now. Weird phantom pains that are hard to explain.. I honestly cannot tell if they are real or not. When I concentrate on them they go away so who knows. Life is too short to live with this agony, if your doctor is not ordering you an MRI get to another one that will. I had my MRI in December of 2017.. 4 months of hell until I was able to get the surgery.

    • @robwatts3579

Seriously, I kept calling and asking to speak to anyone. I had a history of sciatica that would come and go, so kaiser went business as usual.
My foot went numb then my leg and that was the sign that I knew it was something much more. Had to keep calling everyday. Got a telephone appt. With a different doctor who finally ordered a MRI for next day. Then was sent to specialist but they canceled the appointment due to Covid-19. I had to drop F- bombs with the person on the phone. They called me back and told me to come in right away. Within 10 minutes I had another appt with the surgeon. Surgery 8 days later due to taking motrin. Longest 8 days ever.
Woke up no pain in the leg. Thank God.

@@freestylebully4849 the pain did go away but I still had flare ups down the road. The surgery was there to fix the current pain, but it did not fix the issue. I think my life style of not sitting correctly and not keeping more core strong is a big reason. I try to do core exercises now everyday to try and alleviate the issue. I had leg pain before the surgery and back pain. It was so bad I couldn't sleep for more then 3 hours at a time. I also had weakness in the leg and was numb from my back to my toes on my right side.
I did slip playing with my kid back in December 2021. My feet went over my head and I landed on my back. Blew out my disc again. this time no surgery, but healing was much longer. I am doing great right now, no pain for the most part but my 3 toes on my right foot are still numb.
Did you change your bed yet?
Do you lay on your stomach throughout the day or at the end of the day to help relieve the slouching. I have an issue not sitting up straight and slouching all the time. This is probably a major issue.
I got a sleep number bed and it helped me a lot. My wife wants princess plush but my back cannot take the softness. I put mine around 70-80 sleep number and even 100 when I have a sore back.
Have you read up on the Mckenzie method? that helped me a lot.
I try to be way more active now with going on walks and riding bikes, and try not to sit too long which is hard since I sometimes have to sit at a computer for 12 hours for work.
I'm not sure about a surgery for a bulge disc, mine was a herniated one. I would try Mckenzie method before I did surgery. It was a last resort for me since my leg was losing function.
I watch Bob and Brad on youtube also to get tips on exercises i should and shouldn't do.
Good luck man, back pain is something that is so weird and hard to fix. I had a microdiscectomy for a herniation that needed to be cut out. Not sure what they do for a bulge disc. Although I had bulge disc problems before it blew out.

@@robwatts3579 thanks for responding. I tried the McKenzie stretches consistently for 2 months straight. No relief. I also found out 5 months ago I have mild scoliosis 🙃 I watched all Bob and brad videos and tried all the stretches. My back had painful muscle spasms for 2 hours straight when I would try to go to sleep the first 2 months then my back got real tight when I lay on my back in my bed at night when I tried to sleep the next 2 months. Now my back only hurts when I have 2 pillows on top of each other instead of one when I'm laying in bed tryna watch tv

@@youcandoit7494 I am doing well so far. The pain is gone from my leg, but my foot is still numb. My butt and hammy are a little less numb which I'm hoping means the nerve is waking up / unpinching. I have felt a couple of sciatica pangs that went to the hammy but that's it. Yours could be just a ghost pain of the nerve waking up.
What position are you laying or sleeping, I find that only my side is okay right now. I tried my back a couple of times and I got up super sore and felt like the incision hurt more than normal. Good luck!
