Said by the LEGEND himself! Thank you Lawrence Kenshin. Been getting comments left right center that "ill catch a head kick" when I've mentioned the dangers of slipping with the same patterns or by abusing head movement.
Very very few fighters have the world class reflexes as Somrak, Samart and Lerdsila. Its a matter of time before you catch a head kick by someone who notices a fighter ducking so low. The head kick will end up landing especially by a fighter who ends his punch combinations with kicks. A few slips and ducks are ok but not that amount or dipping that low. A high tight guard is much more effective in the long term.
MEXTHAIBOXER, as mentioned in the video, I will use head movement when my hands happen to be low and its my last resort (whether the reason was due to bad habit or other reasons), or I am in a heated exchange and I rely on head movement reflex (which you need to drill it as Lawrence Kenshin stated) or if I am just having fun playing around with head movement (sparring) I appreciate you educating us on the kicking, but I will assume you didn't watch the full video because I cautioned everyone of the follow up head kick and even paused framed myself getting booted in the head. I never advised anyone to go into a fight looking to dodge strikes and I mentioned to not repeat the same head movement patterns. Also as Lawrence Kenshin stated, I adjust my fighting style depending on my opponents strengths and weaknesses.
@@MMAShredded I do not disagree with use of head movement but the main problem is how far you drop down while employing it especially while moving out of range. Pure (extremely low) boxing head movement is just an overall bad idea in any kicking sport especially while moving backwards. Its simply a great way to get caught by an advancing opponent. Small slips and ducks are effective and great ways to set up counters but moving away and breaking posture isnt. To each their own I guess.
Man, watching fighters slip punches and making their opponents miss every hit is so satisfying! You definitely have great anticipation and timing skills that I hope to achieve. The back stepping into the opposite stance seems like a good place to start improving my head movement. Thank you for the video Jeff. Much appreciated👍👌
Keep slipping in orthodox stance, bouncing going forward in your stance slipping from right to left, and then change stance into southpaw and practice doing the same bouncing motion in that stance backwards and forwards.
"The aesthetic dance of the body around the violence of blows" In boxing, bending and head movement are the most artistic of all the qualities a fighter has, avoiding the violence and letting you in a position to attack or avoid... Really nice video!
Excellent choice of thema. You know what's naturally next: footwork. You covered this in Cruz and Dillashaw, but maybe a dedicated video would be warranted.
One thing to add to the Head movement notes is that Anderson and Prince Naseem would dodge with hands down as counter balances for quicker follow-ups and odd angles, not to mention automatic underhooks.
MMAShredded if you haven't checked him(?) out already, BJJscout is super technical, even with striking analysis. Case in point, his Conor preview just today. Speaking of Conor, this is a really really abstract and contentious idea, but are there ways to increase your reflexes and trigger speed for fighting? It seems so subjective but i haven't seen a video on that yet.
Thanks for sharing! I'm going to have to study this video and start training some of this stuff! Suddenly a lot of the "fancy" footwork that a lot of outfighters do makes so much more sense! I also like the fact that you quickly addressed the pros and cons of using head movement. So many people treat stuff like this as the be-all and end-all of what you would do in a fight, as if that's the only thing you can do lol They don't fully understand the context in which you're applying it and don't take it with a grain of salt
As a trainer and fighter myself ..my cup is never full.. great content I'm always pouring in knowledge. A martial artist will never know it all but we all learn from each other. Keep up the great work

Man i absolutely love that slipping and back stepping into the opposite stance. Do you think that could work in boxing? It seems to me you could really counter off of it. You Your first slip opens up a right hook to the body or the second slip opens up a left hook to the head or body. You stay pretty balanced through the whole move and if you were to keep your right hand up it could defend your opponent following with a right hook.
Yes nice man I was waiting for one of those! I am really conscious about getting hit in the head as little as possible, mostly for health reasons. It is part of the sport but I am not a fan of putting the gloves to the head and then still getting the impact on my head...
Yeah you are absolutely right. I just started one and a half months ago but that always kind of seemed odd to me to defend solely like that. Thank you again very much for your videos, they help tremendously and it is great to see someone who is conscious about his health and not just "spar hard all the time train hard fight hard" haha :D Could you do one on buakaw? Legit skillset very well demo’d here. Don’t get discouraged if you get timed when this skill is in early stage development. Before you have the full feel of it, you will probably be doing somewhat rote patterns and you will get timed and caught by decent guys. Keep playing with it until you own it well enough to change patterns frequently. It’ll also help you see other guy’s patterns and time them! Remember that even one additional layer of change-up will make it WAY more difficult for your opponent to time where you’ll be. You don’t need 10 different reactions loaded up. Try to get three and you’ll be doing great. Even two will keep you pretty safe. It can really demoralize your opponent and might even break his composure.
Yes good tips here always better to retreat at an angle than just linear backwards. I would also like to add, using head movement and actually pivoting outside of the opponents lead side so when they come at you with a punch not only did you slip the punch but you are positioned perfectly to land hard counter on their blind spot. In your sparring clips you simultaneously slip the punch to land the counter a la bruce lee’s intercepting fist. Is risky and I would advise only if you have the speed advantage (which you do). The leaning back step backwards method is safe but leaves almost no options to land hard counters (perhaps an uppercut or frontkick as a counterweight) but relies too much on an opponent to overcommit and extend but you sacrifice a lot of ring control for dodging punches that could of been parried or blocked. Someone skilled can use this to throw feints have you overreact just to position you against the cage/ropes. Great videos keep it up man
MMAShredded yeah! Dont get me wrong the title of this video is head movement after all... just that for me seems like a wasted opportunity to slip a punch, be positioned perfectly in infighting range (to land some nasty body hooks) but then just see you lean and step back out of that perfect position putting yourself again at punching range to slip some more punches walking backwards.
My favorite tutorials for muay thai/mma, thank you! Here's my pitch for an episode: Creating a Counter! I like having planned combos in mind, but never know what patterns, styles, body positions, etc. to look for when choosing the perfect counter strikes/combos in a fight.

Great breakdown. The other part to mastering this skill is reading you opponents lead attacks and never slip in the pocket the same way in succession, or make it obvious. Never let your opponent think you will not counter, some will feint or pull a cross in line with your slip. Bait the jab and space your movements. The entire concept is to know the room you have to their reach and speed.
So easy for people to sit back and watch a video claiming they can catch you with head kick etc. With that logic then you should never throw a jab cause you can get countered. Use and don’t abuse!!! Keep up the good work brotha
Great job, everyone who says this won't work in Muay Thai, consider taking a look at Somrak, Samart, and Lerdsila.
