  • I finally got around to a task I've been needing to do for some time - rendering lard on the stove top from the pigs we raised last year. When raised right, pigs produce fat that can be rendered into lard that is rich in vitamin D. I am so excited to have a fat source we can produce here on our small homestead.

    Great video. We all need to learn simple skills such as this. I am presently making tallow from beef fat. Putting in small jars for convenience.

    Did you know that lard is excellent for seasoning new cast iron or older cast iron pans, add a very thin coat of warmed lard with a pastry brush and into the oven at 300 degrees F.

      Yes! I am also planning to render some more in a couple of my cast iron pots so they can get a good seasoning.

    I never put water in with my lard either, did it just like you and it always ended up just perfect. Just a sharp knife and a roasting pan. I have used the slow cooker before but I've never heard of doing it in the IP. Thanks for sharing your method. Have a great week!

    I've only rendered lard once but I did the meat grinder and then double boiler method. It took longer to prepare the lard than it did melt in the double boiler. I was so excited. I have the most perfect snow white colored lard. I hoard it like it's gold.

      I will have to try grinding it before rendering when we do get a grinder in the future. I have heard that you end up with more lard in the end, so I'd be curious to see. Thanks for sharing!

      Thank you Carrie! I have heard the smaller the pieces the more lard that is rendered out, I believe that's one reason why people like to use a meat grinder for this.

    Hi Abbey. I use my instant pot for rendering. I only put about 2 lbs in the pot with about 1/2 c water. Pressure on high for 1 hour. Strain the chunks of fat off and there you go. It is so easy! Amazing just how many things you can do with your own lard. I keep my bacon drippings in the fridge and use for browning my stew beef and I think I mentioned I have used it in baking powder biscuits. Great stuff!

      Hi Sheila! I have fat I need to deal with still so I think I will give that method a try. Thanks for sharing! I do remember you mentioning the bacon fat in biscuits, I have that on my list to try.. that sounds amazing.

    I was going to render lard three weeks ago so I called a butcher and he quoted me $3.00 a pound for pig fat. That was CRAZY high prices for me so I passed. Ham by itself is cheaper...lol...
    Do you know what a fair price is for pig fat from a butcher? Thanks!

    First off, love your channel.
    My God girl get yourself a grinder maybe a Kitchen Aid mixer grinder attachment.. A Kitchen Aid grinder with sausage stuffing attachments is from $50-$75.. Since you live in a cooler climate you can make hard sausages such as salami, pepperoni, and all kinds of hard-cured meat that will last a year or more without refrigeration.. Sausage making is easy and fun.

      Id love to learn to make hard sausages. Grinder is on our to purchase list, but want to get one that will last. I honestly haven't heard great things about the kitchen aid attachment, I think we will go with a stand alone one.

      @@abbeyverigin The plastic grinder attachments for a KitchenAid are not the best but mine has given me 20 years of service, The metal attachment grinder is much better and more reliable. Manual grinders last forever but turn by elbow grease you must manually crank them. The plus side is your great-grandchildren will be able to pass it on to their great-grandchildren it will last forever and a day.
