  • Learn how to enter and exit a low wing plane and still look cool. For years, man has asked "How do you enter a low wing plane?" The FAA has given their guidance, and lots of plane owners have chimed in. Today, I am going to give you the definitive answer as to how one should enter and exit Piper, Mooney, and Bonanza aircraft while still looking cool calm and collected.

Over thirty three years ago I learned two valuable lessons about flying. In ground school we learned that the force that makes airplanes fly is money. This was obvious and easy to understand. The second was from my instructor, Harry Frankfort. Harry was in his early 70s and taught me that the hardest part of flying was getting in and out of the airplane. At nineteen, I didn't understand what he meant. Now I totally get it.

I'm always most concerned about getting out of confined spaces, so I watched this video in reverse. It wasn't easy and I wouldn't recommend watching RUclips videos in reverse and that's when it dawned on me, you already have a couple videos on the proper way to exit an airplane - "Pilot Sucked (out of his plane)" and "More Pilots Sucked out of airplanes. Cherokee 140, six foot four inches, at 52 years old - I never exit the same way twice. The linemen love to crowd the plane to watch. My hand cutter is located at the top of door jam. I always thought that was a(n) unique feature of my plane. I guess it was a Piper factory option.

There are one or two power-assisted methods to get out. The first is to look for a pull strap between your legs. Another option is to strap fire extinguishers to your calves, shut off the engine, and pop the door. I'm told that a pressure difference that built up over your flight helps with this exit maneuver.

I always go for the "Hail Mary" and just end up inside after a short black-out and then taking stock of damages to myself or the interior. This is not approved or recommended and it doesn't work very well, but habits are hard to break. For exit I recommend the bagage door to save what dignity there's left.

Hahaha I'll just go ahead and send this to new students and passengers.
I was taught "the piper roll". On the wing, face backwards, and lower your inside knee to the seat and roll to the left seat. Reverse to get out. There's a strap behind the right seat to help with leverage kneeling and standing.
As a cfi, I get in facing forward and lower myself, using my inside arm on the roof to bear weight. To get out, just awkwardly roll out to my knees on the wing.

The Lear Jet is another one on how to open the door from the inside! The problem is the way the door is made it is also the step when deployed.
To open the door you have to rotate a lever about 165 degrees this retracts the locking pins from the fuselage. Then the killer item is a small ratchet lock you release while holding on to a cable that is attached to the door. There are those that have and those that will fall out of the LR Jet. When releasing that ratchet latch! The unknowing crew member opening the hatch will have their body weight on the step. When they release that latch they are attracted to the ramp real quick. Do not ask me how I know this! I will say learned about this phenomenon in the early 80’s
The J-3 cub is always a fun one, unless you have been properly trained. 😁🛫😊
