Nice of you guys to have an unknown car enthusiast on the show and giving him some exposure. That Mr. Leno sure looks like a great guy and a car enthusiast for real!
Whoever this Jay Leno guy is he is really personable and talks with people well. I think Leno should look into talk shows, I think he'd do great at them.
@@JounLord1 he sure has a large chin, he should be known for that

That the 100 year old EV could do about 80 miles on a charge is mindblowing, there are modern ones that do less than that. Great to see Jay, I want his garage :)
It’s almost like electric cars are a dead end and were rightfully dropped after 1920s.
the difference is in a motors HP, nowadays they are more smaller and more power-hungry. Would you consider a car with 20 miles/h max?
@@s.i.m.c.a That's probably fine for small communities. It's basically a nicer golf kart.
Cars now are immensely heavier than they were 100 years ago. Even though modern materials are lighter, the safety features required by law are bulky and heavy themselves, but it also means bigger frame and even more weight. Over time electric motors have only improved in efficiency a small amount compared to the efficiency of gains of internal combustion. The result is the average mile per kWh for EVs is lower now than 100 years ago because of weight, but the mpg of gas and diesel cars are a little bit better now than they were in spite of the increased weight (even excluding hybrids). For example my nearly 20 year old Buick has the same MPG as a model T ford even though it weighs nearly 3 times more
Well to be fair, they weighed nothing and had the skinniest tires ever but still impressive, I agree.
Jay is the best. His eyes light up when he discusses cars. He doesn't just collect, he drives. I'm so glad he found his passion in life. He's probably one of the most genuine, down to earth, and generous celebrities out there. ❤ you Jay
If I'm not mistaken every car in his collection is in running condition. To me that's perfect.
Cars were his passion since he was a kid long before he got famous. He got suspended from High School back in Massachusetts for doing burn outs in the school parking lot.
Even with his wealth, he's reasonable about wanting to drive his cars and not treat his collection as a bunch of assets.
He's against owning a Ferrari because he hates the dealer-culture of being given "the privilege" to own a Ferrari.
He's awesome when it comes to cars but not when it came to the tonight show lol. He screwed over letterman and conan to be able to afford that amazing collection. Moral of the story is just cuz you like a celebrity's work doesn't mean they are good people.
@@JaredConnell what did Jay do?
Great video! Jay's an amazing guy, has a great collection, and loves to KNOW ABOUT and PLAY with his vehicles. So down to earth, normal, natural, and a real car guy! Meet him once in passing some place years ago while he was still on TV, and he's the kind of guy who stopped and talked to anyone--always had time for others, as if you were old friends from way back. Can't say enough good about him or his collection--the fact that he shares it with all of us is STELLAR!!
That "don't be afraid of it son" was so pure and wholesome. Made my whole week.

They look very different to us because of the outer shape! Otherwise they're fundamentally the same as modern day electric cars! These were marketed as horseless carriages hens the shape!
I love how Leno doesn't just collect cars, he actually DRIVES them. Awesome video, loved seeing this collaboration.
And works on them, there's a reason he's a rich guy who always wears denim. Not afraid to get his hands dirty.
I love how people who can't possibly ever afford these cars comment on how other people should treat them. "How dare you not drive your million dollar car" they shout from their base model Lancer.
@@rustler08 hmmmm....interesting point
@@rustler08 Yes, because wanting to see exotic cars actually put to use is such a bad thing. Shame on me.
@@rustler08 Cars are meant to be driven. That's their literal purpose lol.
I love at 9:10 how they just skip over the whole era in the 90s when all the top car manufacturers made electric cars. They even had a Ford Ranger electric. Nearly 5000 electric cars were designed and manufactured by Chrysler, the Ford Motor Company, General Motors (GM), Honda, Nissan, and Toyota; and then later destroyed or donated to museums and educational institutions. They even made a movie about it, ' who killed the electric car' and later a sequel 'Revenge of the Electric Car' where they talk about Tesla in the 2010s
What a thrill for you to tour Jay's museum, but I'm sure Jay was equally thrilled to convey his knowledge to a much younger generation. Watching Zac turn over a Model T put a literal chill up my spine. He showed how easy it was to do, if the car wasn't too cold. And I love how Jay's team has restored the Baker to show it as a piece of social history, right down to the flower vase inside.
I was like “bro, Jay called you son” that’s like every goal achieved at once
Well, you’d imagine it being one of Jay’s cars, it’s an impeccable model. These shafts bent sometimes, or like said about the cold; these things weren’t always so easy to turn over, hence the stories!
People certainly didn’t break their wrists/arms/jaws because they weren’t able-bodied like Jobe (or did they 😂)
@@Wizard__J - I'm not old enough to have remembered when a Model T was common, but my next door neighbor told me that his first car -- this must have been the early 1930s -- was a second-hand Model T. However, I do know that before fuel injection gave our cars an automatic prime of fuel, and multi-vis oil was not that good, and all-weather batteries didn't exist, cars were hard to start when they were cold. So I presume that even a little 20 HP four-cylinder motor in a Model T was hard to start in the winter if all you had was your arm to turn the crankshaft.
@@pacificostudios Early gasoline powered cars used ether starting fluid and or a few drops of gasoline for cold starts. Also keep in mind that low compression engines designed for 60 octane were easier to start....
Mr. Jay Leno has been building a museum collection for a few decades.
Not just cars, but steam engines for pumps, antiques and general car stuff.
Expect it to become a public museum, or a wing of an existing auto museum when he gets closer to going home....
Major props to donut for getting up to the level of having Jay Leno on your channel. I'd be geeking out. Not only because you got to meet him, but you got to go to his collection and talk with him about his passion
When you're crank-stating a car engine make sure to never wrap your thumb around the crank handle. Just pull up with your four fingers. I did once, when I was a teenager and seriously injured myself when it kicked back (the ignition timing was too advanced). That thumb joint has never really fully healed after many decades. It still gives me trouble, the pain sometimes interrupting my sleep.
Every scene being shot with a different car from Jay's collection shows just goes much fun they had shooting this. You can't not have fun when everyone in the room has the same passion.
And at least two shots, with different Stanley Steamers looming in the background. Guys, you should test drive a Stanley. I'm told Jay got a speeding ticket in one, /on the freeway/. Nice.
@@ReggieArford If I ever got a speeding ticket in a vintage car like that, I would thank the officer, and go have it framed!

I work at an antique car museum and I love that you guys are putting out this kind of content. One issue a lot of older guys have is that there isn't enough younger interest in the older tech and design. I know Donut does this with Past Gas but I am so glad they are putting out video content like this. Jay felt very natural in this too and seems Zach and Nolan had great chemistry with him. Title: driving a 100 year-old electric car
Video: 5 min driving an old car, 15 min advertisement of LUCID
Nice to see Jay is healed up well. Dude has had a crazy year
Dude. This is like a PBS Kids show!!! You retain the information because it is given to you in a very simple yet effective way. Thank you guys for such great production.
You haven't seen PBS Kids in nearly two decades if that's not an insult (which I'm assuming it's not intended to be).
I dunno, PBS Kids can get deep into the red meat, all the way down to 3 brown, 1 blue level
I think that the production is precisely the opposite of what you're describing. I can't retain ANY of it because there is absolutely no continuity whatsoever. It's unbelievable. It's a series of random jump cuts, no relationships between elements, and misplaced value priorities. They spent quite a while talking about how much and why they loved the Lucid (which is an absolutely horrible name for a car company - any company, in fact), yet I saw nothing to love about it. It looked like it belonged in the office suite of a CEO, and not even a CEO of a tech company, but more like a youngish, middle aged, international money market fund management company CEO. I didn't see any of the kind of excitement that people get in a Miata, for example. Anyway, the production/presentation is by far the worst part of this video, in my view. In fact, it almost undermines the substance of it. Thankfully there's enough substance at least in the parts about the 1909 Baker, which this really should have been about exclusively.
@@singlesideman I was going to thumbs up your comment until you threw yourself under the intellectual bus by making an ad-hominem about the company Lucid Motors. Please jog your memory on what the word lucid means, and tell me how any of those definitions disqualify the word "lucid" from being a company name. The rest of your comment was go reasonable, but then you went really absurd. 😂 How the heck can lucid "never be a company name"? According to the dictionary, it's very easy to argue that it can be, at least when modern marketing strategies are considered.
Wow. This Jay guy is going to become famous because of donut. Cheers to them for bringing new talent to the surface!❤

@@ebrxh2721 no, does he make fireworks?
Maybe he'll have his own talk show one day.
Jay is the ultimate car guy godfather imho. Whatever amazing thing you can think of, he possibly has two of them.
One of the great things about it is that if it has a couple of wheels or vaguely reminds you of something car related, he's interested in it.
He's no ICE snob or brand snob either. If it has a half decent story, Jay knows it.
Can't think of anyone alive or dead that embodies "car guy" more than him
I love how humble Jay Leno is. This would no doubt be a bucket list achievement.
As a kid we'd go to Auburn Indiana. They have a giant car auction and car museum for Auburns, Duesenbergs, and Cords (these were the luxury car brands of the early 20th century). Anyway, I was always fascinated by the early electric cars in the museum but I never got to see one this restored or running. Thank you Jay for sharing this. Its a beautiful piece of history.
At one point, there were more electric cars than gasoline, but the batteries did not usually last more than about an hour or 2.
I love Leno's passion for collecting and maintaining all these old vehicles. What an amazing collection. Very cool episode.
Jay is THE MAN!!!😊 The fact that y’all had enough respect to NOT use him in the thumbnail makes me love Donut even more. Classy AF. Well done👍
I never really thought about how Jay's shop location allows him to stay "amongst the people" in such a great way, instead of some haughty taughty neighborhood
I believe his warehouse might be part of or adjacent to an Burbank airport so it’s not necessarily just your average warehouse in an industrial area.
He has a house in a posh neighborhood but has his garages in an industrial area for obvious reasons.
Awesome seeing Jay. Awsome seeing his enthusiasm to help fellow car nerds geek out.
I love how Jay knows every detail of his vehicles... his collection is awesome, but HE makes it so much better by driving and maintaining every one of them... there is only one celebrity that I'd love to meet and Jay is that guy...
I hate seeing Jay getting older, he’s on an Attenboroughesque sort of legend level, he knows everything there is to know about cars and loves to share his knowledge.
One of the few people I wish could be around forever because I genuinely don’t think he’d ever get bored of charting the history of cars. He still absolutely lives for it, even as an old man it still brings a childlike wonder and sparkle to his eyes!
Time is flying. We just need to appreciate what we have now :)
"Attenboroughesque" I love that term. Totally agree.
Shame he was a douchebag to Conan O'Brien.

Agree. He researches the cars prior to recording a show, as everyone should, so it appears that he’s a fountain of knowledge.

Excellent video, and even more interesting because Jay was in it. Jay is a great guy and his enthusiasm for cars is awesome. Back in the late 1990s, I co-hosted a weekly driving-related radio show on KRLA/1110 in Los Angeles. On each show, we would interview a "Celebrity Driver of the Week," and Jay graciously agreed to be our very first guest. Talk about getting the show off to a great start!
I love how you guys have Jay on to help the guy out. Who’d have thought you’d ever be twice as big as Jay Leno? 😂 Well done guys and well earned
Donut Media is not "twice as big as Jay Leno"...
Look into what Mr. Jay Leno spends his time & money on: help for disabled veterans, training scholarships & opportunities in auto service & restoration, creating a museum rather than dozens of dead cars, etc. etc...
All Donut Media has is a great RUclips Channel, but I doubt that people will want to see the pile of wrecks & the handful of cool cars that they made. This is fine, as Donut Media is out to entertain while informing gear heads. And that pile of wrecks are necessary to test the good and bad ideas that aftermarket parts companies sell with overstated to fraudulent claims
The automotive artwork on the walls is absolutely beautiful.

You guys should be doing some old history stuff with Jay. He's a legendary Automotive historian
There was also an effort to make electric cars seem more feminine than cars with internal combustion engines, good job not mentioning that at all.
It's because of really outdated societal norms
Men are supposed to be tough, so the vibration smoke and noise of an engine shouldn't bother them.
Women were stereotyped as sensitive so a quiet electric motor was for them because it would, in their minds, make them happier than a gas car.
The same stuff happened with gun Design too, guns for women were typical small, with diminutive calibers and low capacity.
Rudder??
I think you mean 'Tiller'.
The rudder is the fin in the water under the boat.
The tiller is the handle used to steer the rudder.
Jay is the grandpa every wishes they have
Hopefully this is not the last episode with Jay. Lots of history can be covered with his collection.
This video is a prime example of why I love the donut media family. ❤
It's so magical to see someone drive this thing in full HD instead of seeing a speedy black and white movie.

The early 2000s Ford Ranger EV: "Am I a joke to you?"
Im so surprised donut isn’t on live television, the quality over the recent year is amazing. 👍
Television is dead. This is where the money is now.
If they were on TV, the production wouldn't be anything close to this. It would be sterile and boring, full of ultra basic facts and information for a general audience. To avoid that kind of "corporate sterilization," they'd have to air on a specialized network, like Motor Trend. Then their ratings and viewership would plummet because that's such a small, niche market in the world of television.
The best car show that ever aired on TV would probably be Roadkill, and even they've moved to more profitable streaming services now.
TL;DR: If Donut moved to television, it wouldn't be the same production we love. They have more freedom and better connection to their audience by streaming their content.
lol, what's television?
I love to see how much Donut Media has grown over time, I just miss the days when James actually made an appearance 😢

Mr. Leno’s vehicle warehouse is insane.
@13:00 The average price of an EV has drastically come down since the end of 2022. Kelly Blue Book says that for June 2023 the average price for an EV is $53,438. Kelly also has revised the ICE price to $48,808. That's only $4,630 difference. Subtract $7,500 for the federal tax incentive for purchasing an EV and the average EV is cheaper than the average new ICE.
Fantastic content, great to see the beginnings of the electric car era. Also couldn't help but notice that you were talking about comparable gas cars to the Baker while sitting in and standing beside first a Stanley steamer, then a White steam car. LOL That new electric Lucid Air GTP is slick!
Could you cover the Aptera please? One might call it the spiritual successor to the Baker Electric as it is small, light, efficient, user repairable, and even solar powered to an extent. It is also planned to be fairly cheap.

Met Jay Leno twice last year just so I could buy his ONE Owner 1996 GTS Viper. But of course you knew what happened, he said NO. Well either way he signed two different books for my enthusiast 10 year old boy RAHIM. And we got another one owner GTS Viper 1996 with under 8k miles from Austin, TX.

The fact that some people consider a lift back inferior to a trunk for any reason is completely baffling
They don't, this video was paid for by Lucid and they did a bad job of hiding it.
Strange to ignore the Nissan Leaf which is arguably the first to reach mass market
The crossover that we didn't expect but definitely needed. Love Baker Electrics.
Retitle this to "Lucid paid us for an ad and paid Jay Leno to join us".
Only a well-tuned or newer car could start with one crank back then. Electric cars were perfect for driving in town.
So electric motors killed the electric motor?
Gas companies did. I’m not sure they wanted to say that tho 😂.
@@izy5580 Yeah, like let's ignore that complete electrification of the US wouldn't happen until the mid-1930's when the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Hoover Dam were built to provide power to the Heartlands. Oh and how one can find gasoline EVERYWHERE in 1907 because of Standard Oil. Up until its breakup in the 1910's, Standard Oil has been a fixture in automotive development and history. Every single famous historical race is fueled by Standard Oil gasoline, every achievement using the internal combustion engine like the first airplane flight was powered by Standard Oil fuel...

I think folks are forgetting the resurgence of Electric Cars in the 1960's and 1970's, Cars like the Henny and the Lectric Lepoard and Citi Car sold in volumes much larger than GM's first reentry in the 1990's Thousands of cars from various companies came about in the 70's in response to the energy crisis.
Nice Lucid Air ad guys, thanks.
Edit: Oh now that I saw the part about Lucid having a regular trunk instead of a hatchback for handling, I know you guys are paid shills. There's many ways to make a car more rigid, and most EVs handle quite well because of the weight of the batteries lowering the center of gravity anyway. Kind of lame if all the Lucid has over Tesla Plaid is a regular trunk for better handling. They could have improved on Tesla's poor build quality or shitty customer service but they decided to focus on the trunk, nice!
Crazy flex to have that many cars, randomly pick out an ancient Model T…and the mfr just starts like it’s new.
Jay was a bit off-base when he said "combustion engines are pretty efficient."
They're actually horribly INefficient. Most of the power generated by an ICE is wasted as heat. That's not even my opinion, that's just a straight-up fact.
I love when Jay is on this channel. Imagine being friends with that guy.
ICE's (internal combustion engines) are actually inefficient as hell when it comes energy yield from fuel. Like it's only around 25% to 30% on average. Majority of that yield is wasted on heat loss.
I've literally never seen a Lucid car in the UK or Europe and I travel around a lot.
What’s it with the tiktok sfx? Do your viewers need constant auditory stimulation?

Electric vehicles did not work before and will not be usable outside cities in the future
Hillarious. Remote Aboriginal communities here in Oz are now buying evs. These communities all have large solar, and evs make perfect sense to keep the costs down for the long distances travelled.
@@nordic5490 Hilarious straw man, now tell that to Siberians or Canadians for example. Oh, and I bet a lot of taxpayers money was used to influence their choice.
5:32 - That's the "tiller." On a boat it would be _connected_ to a rudder but in a car it just controls the steering rack.
Why TF this suddenly become a lucid ad? What is even the point
Could see how stupidly giddy those kids got when they left the old junk and got in their 'reliable' modern car freaking out over it.
The Doble steam cars deserve more appreciation as well. And the model that came out in 1925 should really get a modern upgrade, and it would probably dominate the transportation industry. Fill it up with water and you're ready to go!! But there's actually a patent for a car that runs on compressed air as well. But supposedly, if anyone started building such a device in production fashion, a car company would hire someone to have him killed. Or just the government in general would have him silenced.
