Hi there! I was looking for a video that summarizes the USMLE and UKMLA as these were what were discussed in my class as an option to apply through to practice in those respective countries. We discussed the Canadian and Australian options as well. I only realized halfway through this video that it’s a year old and was surprised as to how much has changed over the span of 1 year with these medical licensing exams. USMLE step 1 is now a pass/fail exam and there is a UKMLA which will be introduced a year before I graduate. Still, this was an informative video but will try and find a more comprehensive video on the exam contents for both in due time. Thank you ✨.
Yes, but only if you want to specialise in one of the medical specialties like cardio, resp, derm. If you want to specialise in surgery, paediatrics, general practice etc you do not need the MRCP. You will need to do the other pg exams like mrcs, mrcog, mrcpaeds. So it is not worth doing the MRCP.
I'm a bit confused, I understood in your video that there are specialties in which you don't need to present MRCP? I am interested in doing anesthesiology in the UK but I don't know if I have to present MRCP after PLAB
MRCP is not needed for anaesthetics. MRCP is suitable for senior doctors who wants to pursue the higher medical specialties like gastroenterology, dermatology, cardiology, neurology, renal medicine, respiratory etc. MRCP is not needed for other specialties like surgery, paediatrics, psychiatry, general practice, anaesthetics, radiology etc.

Yes, as you have completed MRCP- you can be registered with the GMC. With regards to specialty training in the UK- there is no age limit. As long as you are interested in that specialty and have a good cv/portfolio- you should have a chance of getting in. Have you done all/part of cardiology specilaty/pg training? If you have done pg in cardiology previously- you could try and enter the specialist register via the cesr route.

Hi, well done. Dermatology can be quite competitive. You need to have a good cv/portfolio and do well in the interview. Hi, specialty exams are normally taken while doing the respected specialty training programme. For example, MRCP is taken during internal medicine training IMT (3 years). MRCS is take during core surgical training.
After PLAB, apply for FY2 jobs here in the UK. After FY2 you can apply for specialty training in your desired specialty.

2nd point is their any age limit..to get in residency programe
Yes, as you have completed MRCP- you can be registered with the GMC. With regards to specialty training in the UK- there is no age limit. As long as you are interested in that specialty and have a good cv/portfolio- you should have a chance of getting in. Have you done all/part of cardiology specilaty/pg training? If you have done pg in cardiology previously- you could try and enter the specialist register via the cesr route.
No one should consider coming to the UK, with this current economical situation. People here are having to decide whether to have heating or have meals. 😢

Hi, well done. Dermatology can be quite competitive. You need to have a good cv/portfolio and do well in the interview. To have a good portfolio, try to do audits, quality improvement projects, papers, posters, presentations related to dermatology. You can also do this during the 6-12 months work in the UK.

Thirdly and most importantly, what I want to know is after clearing PLAB, can I certainly getting into a specialty training of my choice, unlike the type of uncertainty we get to see in USMLE.

Hi, there is a shortage of doctors in UK so there are always job vacancies. Since you have done MRCPCH- you should be able to apply for GMC registration. Since you have done specialty training/pg in India- you can become a paediatric consultant in UK via the CESR route. So you do not have to retrain or do specialty training/pg in UK. Hi Dr., it is difficult for trust grade SHOs (IMG) to get into a specialty training in the UK?
Not really. From my obervations, it is possible.
Dr.Lavnya, Very nicely explained video. Need your advice for my daughter. She is finishing MS Anaesthesia in 2 months from Delhi. She is a US citizen. She doesn"t want to do residency again to practice in USA.
1..Is there any way of getting residency waiver for USA ? 2. Which country is ideally suited for her specialization, to go by mere taking a licensing exam only, and not doing the residency? 3. Any fellowship you could suggest to her for her specialisation, which is in demand now and well paying, and the country? Will appreciate your sincere advice.
Hi, thank you. I have not worked in US, so I am not familar with the other routes to practice there. Sorry.
Hi i done my master in china (internal medicine), for Uk do i need to do MRCP?
Yes, you will need to register with the GMC to work here. To register with the GMC, you can do PLAB or MRCP. MRCP will be a better option if you have already completed internal medicine.
Lavnya Balenderan Thank you so much
@Truely Indian Yes, most IMGs apply for a non-training post in UK first, before applying for a training programme. This will give you NHS experience.
I have completed my pg in internal medicine from India and willing to work in UK. How can I practice internal medicine in UK? How I need to approach?
Hi, have you completed MRCP? If not you could start by doing plab and applying for a trust grade job in internal medicine.
Thanks a lot for replying. No I haven't.how can I approach for plab examination and applying for trust job. It will be great if you can share some useful links regarding these
@@92bhavesh45 Hi, you should start by doing the PLAB exam. It should not be too difficult. Once you have completed PLAB, you can apply for GMC registration here and then apply for jobs in the UK.
@@lavnya70 thanks for the help

IMT is not recognised in India right?
How to do MD medicine in Uk
Hello madam,,,after clearing the MRCP exam, what has to be done to get a speciality training like Endocrinology or Internal Medicine etc??
It is very confusing...i want to get my specialisation from the UK.
Please explain the due process!
Thanks in advance!
Hi, after FY2, apply for internal medicine training IMT (3 years). During IMT you need to complete the MRCP. After IMT, apply for higher specialty training in endocrinology (4 years).
Thank u!! U have been very helpful with ur answers as well as videos!😊
Hi Ma'am, Thank you very much for the information you shared.
I am a medical graduate and I'm looking forward to do the PLAB exam in future.
I want to choose general surgery as a specialty, will you please guide me in what i need to do to get into surgical specialty in the UK.
Hi, after MBBS, internship and PLAB, apply for FY2 post in the UK. After Fy2 (1 year), apply for core surgical training CST (2 years). After CST, apply for higher surgical training in you desired specialty eg general surgery/plastics/urology/vascular etc (5 years).
@@lavnya70 how is the application procedure? Is it interview based or are there more exams one need to clear for that?
@@lavnya70 In the FY2 year are you considered as a surgical resident?
@@DrPatil. It is mainly based on your interview and portfolio/CV. During CST, you need to complete MRCS and during higher surgical training you need to complete FRCS.
@@DrPatil. No, FY2 is the post doctors do after internship year. CST and higher surgical training will be equivalent to residency.
Why did you consider USMLE?
UK is not good?
Hi, in the beginning I wanted to consider all options. But realised that it is better to decide where you want to work and focus on that.
