  • Genre-hopping director Rian Johnson joins us to talk about his acclaimed career and the making of his fifth feature Knives Out: a wickedly witty and stylish murder mystery, which the Maryland-born filmmaker has described as "an attempt to capture the twisty fun of an Agatha Christie whodunit." A graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Johnson debuted with 2005's Brick, which ingeniously transposed the stylized tropes of Dashiell Hammett's hardboiled detective fiction to a Californian high school setting. Made for just $500,000 and boasting a memorable lead performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this fresh take on neo-noir won the Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at Sundance Film Festival.
Three years later, Johnson showed his comedic verve with globe-trotting conman caper The Brothers Bloom, before reuniting with Gordon-Levitt (starring alongside Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt) for 2012's time travelling sci-fi thriller Looper. A critical and commercial hit which further displayed his dazzling command of genre, its success led this most inventive of Hollywood auteurs to both write and direct Star Wars: The Last Jedi. A fearlessly bold continuation of the beloved space opera saga, the latter became the highest grossing film of 2017 and one of the most successful movies of all time.

All these fucking excellent movies came out in 2019. The fact than Knives Out still manages to be one of the best movies in such a great year says a shit ton about the movie

I expect to see the likes of Tarantino, Scorsese, or Bong Joon-ho on a list of the year's best films, but The Lighthouse has been sorely neglected by most critics. I get that it may have polarized certain folk, but I found its subject and characters thoroughly mesmerizing from beginning to end. I don't know that I could say it was especially meaningful - although it does provoke ideas - but as a work of entertainment it triumphed and absolutely made an impact on me, which is largely what I've come to expect of films made nowadays. The above-average quality of its craftsmanship was just a bonus.

I love The Force Awakens dearly but by the time Rogue One-a movie which had value *only* because of previous Star Wars movies-rolled around I was already getting tired of the nostalgia fest. The Last Jedi shook up the Star Wars formula, brought cinematic artistry to Star Wars, gave each character interesting and clearly defined arcs, *finally* introduced new thematic elements to Star Wars, and drove us away from the mediocre path that J.J. Abrams set us on. Hell, if you told me before I saw the movie that they would not only manage to give Luke Skywalker another arc, but also give him his best arc over the entire saga, I would call you crazy, but Rian did it. Star Wars is not "just a sci-fi movie"... it's a condensing of all the timeless and vital themes from before recorded history, distilled into a package that can easily be enjoyed as entertainment by modern peoples, whilst still influencing them positively on a subconscious level.
Star Wars, as created by George Lucas, was always designed to be a tool of teaching and inspiration, something Rian Johnson obviously hasn't got the faintest idea about.

Speaking of Akira Kurosawa, I love how The Last Jedi takes the Kurosawa inspiration and just adds even more in basically making a Ikiru/Ran mashup (with a pinch of Rashomon) which is kinda genius when you think about how it was always going to deal with the aging classic characters cause if Star Wars is based on Kurosawa, why not use the films dealing with the aging characters.
I particularly love how in Luke's death scene it's basically the final shot of Ran with the sunseting with the blind man left alone on the cliff, but with the optimism of the final shot of Ikiru as he now can see better than even in a metaphorical sense and if filled with peace and accomplishment as he dies. Then also throwing some true Star Wars love in there with the twin suns
Also for anyone who says it ruin Luke Skywalker this is how I feel:
What they did with Luke in TLJ is far more inspirational to me than any perfect legend could have been. I have me own personal struggles that I won't go into detail on, but often it feels like I'm hopeless, life is hopeless, I'm a mess and there's nothing I can do about it. Luke is favourite Star Wars character and to see him fall into a similar state as me helps me because it says, hey you aren't that pathetic for being and feeling this way, even heroes as great as Luke Skywalker can fall this low. What's even more inspirational is that at the end he finds new hope in himself and the galaxy at large and sacrifices himself in order to preserve hope for the future and inspire the galaxy. This says that no matter how low you feel, how far you have fallen, there's hope for you yet.

The Last Jedi did not ruin Star Wars. The Force Awakens did. You know a franchise is in deep shit when they have to completely rehash an old film, live entirely on fan service and reinstitate the very same evil organization that had been defeated in the previous film. They had the chance to create a new and original legacy for the universe. They gave up before they even started.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Rian Johnson the Foolish?
I thought not. It's not a story the Disney marketers would tell you. It's a Stupid Legend. Rian Johnson the Foolish was a Director, so powerful and so foolish he could use his authority to create plot holes... He lacked such knowledge of the Source, he could even move characters from one side of the room to another in the blink of an eye.
The Fool's Side of Directing is a pathway to many stories some would consider... unnatural. He became so powerful... that the only thing he was afraid of was the fans not liking his movie; which eventually, of course, they did not. Unfortunately, he created such a mess that Jar Jar Abrams had to return to make the ninth episode.
Ironic. He could create a beautiful movie, but not a good one.
