It's a sped-up, less acoustic (and weaker) version of like... half of John Cougar Mellencamp's discography. Take a listen to "Crumblin' Down" by JCM, then listen to this.

The first time I heard this song, it was my daughter’s 21st birthday. We were at her house with masks on, instead of going to dinner as we’d originally planned. My older daughter was cutting off my 21yo’s waist-length hair, because she had just started chemotherapy for stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
My daughter’s boyfriend had this album playing in the background, and I tuned in after a little bit of 🌱, and he and I talked about the music and the cool screensaver on their TV, while I tried to forget worrying about my daughter battling cancer.
She had her last treatment the day before Thanksgiving, and that weekend she moved to Salt Lake City with her boyfriend. Her last scan showed up clear! For Christmas they bought me a ticket to see The War on Drugs in Salt Lake this Feb. We’ve come full circle. This song means a lot to me, because I had it on repeat so much while she was going through chemotherapy.
Sorry for the ramble. I get pretty sentimental after a little 🌱. May delete later if this ends up embarrassing

The first time I heard this song, I was a couple years out from the heartbreak of my life, and it reminded me of what it was like to be with them. Like we could run away at any moment. Like the city lights were poetic and depressing. A few years later, we saw each other again, and we both knew it would be the last time.
Whenever I hear this song, I just remember that feeling of urgency in love that you can only have in youth, like this is it babe, this is all we have, let's run.

I'm 47 and continually surprised to find great music from artists I had never heard of, as well as rediscovering stuff that I had known about for years but which had not really resonated with me before. TWOD is definitely in that latter category; funny how taste changes over time, as we grow. Keep listening, a lifetime isn't enough to enjoy all the great sounds the world produces.

    Come and see
    Where I witness everything
    On my knees
You beat it down to get to my soul
    Against my will
Anyone could tell us you're coming
    But baby, don't mind
Leave it on the line, leave it hanging on a rail
    Come and ride away
It's easier to stick to the old
    Surrounded by the night
Surrounded by the night, and you don't give in
    But you abuse my faith
Losing every time but I don't know where
    You're on my side again
So ride the heat wherever it goes
I'll be the one to care, woo
    You're all I've got, wait
Don't wanna let the dark night cover my soul
Well, you can see it through the darkness coming my way
Well, we won't get lost inside it all again
    Oh, my mind
No one sees me right here waiting
They don't mind, they don't hear, I can hear
Throw the big weight of your mind against it
I would keep you here, but I can't
Oh, I'm trying to see the right, the right way
I don't see it over there where I come from, babe, yeah
    Yeah, woo
    Lost on my sea again
The easy way to cover my sin
Don't want another dark time think to myself
I won't get lost inside it all, I'm on my way
Well I can see it in the darkness covering my mind
Well we can hear the voices war inside, yeah
They won't get lost inside it all
    You're on my way, woo

I heard this the first time at the end of "The 214s" episode of Halt and Catch Fire as the team was leaving for Comdex, and kept "rewinding" it to listen to it again. I love it, I think it's great driving music, if you have miles of road ahead of you and can really open it up.

Dzięki dla Programu 3 Polskiego Radia, bez niego bym nie odkrył tego kawałka. Nie po raz pierwszy z resztą.
Thanks to Polish Radio Programme 3, without it, I would not have discovered this piece.

Can't stop listening to this. Oh yeah, you hear the Springsteen influence. No problem with that. Like hearing the Mozart influence on Beethoven.

Scenario: Riding backroads in a small town of Tennessee on a warm spring night with the windows down. The love of your life sitting in the passenger seat of your mustang with her hair blowing in the wind as this song is blaring loudly through the night as you share a six pack of beer.... Sounds like a good first date to me :)

Agree, but change small TN town to driving up the PCH on a cool Catalina Winds CA summer night and you got WINNING 😎👍

the part 2:24 - 3:33 is the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard. It's extraterrestrial and cathartic. It's like you're floating or falling into an endless dark abyss (being filled with peace)

Heard this song last night at the ending of Halt and Catch Fire episode. I thought it was actually an 80s song. Really evocative of that feel and sound
