Hi Jarrod, thanks. I've been waiting for this review and you've addressed pretty much everything. One thing I'm trying to understand why Acer is limiting max expandable RAM to 32GB, which is specified in all marketplaces. 13900hx should support 192 GB as for the Intel's official specs but given that there are no higher capacity RAM available above 48GB currently, it should at least support 96GB (48GBx2). As it comes with 32GB already, there are no options for upgrade if the MAX is 32GB as specified, so I think upgradability score should be even lower in that case.
For an 18" laptop the 4060 is a great bargain second hand. Gives more people access to 18" laptop which are fantastic for the on the go productivity or just moving around the house.
I bought the acre Helios 300 after watching ur vids and honestly it’s a Beast I use it for gaming and programming and it has been amazing so far, the fans are loud in turbo mode but it’s not a problem for me and I always have headphones on anyway, performance on battery is aight, overall very satisfied.
Always totally transparent critique and attention to detail. I mean, who has a comparative historic table of gaming laptop fan noise? Fantastic content!
Excellent review. I would go for the 18". However, I agree with you on loud cooling fans. Price is really good if you don't have the cash for a better more expensive model
I bought this exact model today and I'm very impressed. I think the quality of the chassis is top notch, heavy but sturdy. Performance is buttery smooth. Screen brightness and picture quality/contrast is great. Nicest screen I've seen on a laptop. Was gonna go for a 4090 model, but they're silly money. I did have a few issues with artifacts due to the igpu being selected instead of the 4080, but great now. I use noise cancelling headphones and can't even hear the fans.
I got this too but with the 250hz mini led, all other specs same. the fans are very loud and CPU hits 90-95C on turbo but our ambient temps are around 35C 😂
Been waiting for this for quite a while. Thanks for the detailed review, Jarrod. Do you think this would be a good laptop that can last three or four years considering that it thermal throttled during the stress test, assuming that 87c on the gpu is the thermal throttle limit?
I went for the 16 inch model, same specs as in this 18 variant. This beast plays cyberpunk 2077 with rtx ultra preset and 1600p dlss ultra at 90 - 110 fps. Nothing short of amazing, gets hot tho 95c
Got an Asus G16 (4080). Use throttlestop, undervolt the CPU and set boostclocks to 4700. Much better temps. Also, try CP77 with rtx overdrive with dlss quality and FG, should still give you around 70fps at acceptable latency.
You're the best out there. Its outright insulting that they didnt send you the Mini LED version. Honestly, why would a reasonable consumer choose this non Mini LED version over other non Mini LED models like the Lenovo? For my money, I would only consider the Acer for the fact that they are one of the very few companies that makes higher end gaming laptops wirh Mini LED
Speaking of Acer gaming laptops, there's a new one that's been released, that as far as I'm concerned hasn't been touched upon (well that in depth) anywhere. It's the Acer Nitro V (yes, acer used a roman numeral XD), it's different from the nitro 16 and 15 if I'm correct, and even the back design is slightly different. The biggest difference I've seen is that it has the 2 fans together again compared to other or previous nitro 5s. It also comes with a 13th gen i5 or i7 and 4050 or 2050. How do you think will it stack up against other laptops?
My 2023 helios 16 died within 18 months of usage. There's many people reporting issues on acer forums as well. Acer also doesn't let you undervolt or unlock BIOS on the flagship helios models. Absolutely do not buy Acer. Their customer care is absolutely pathetic too.

I want mini-LED in more laptops sooo bad! I'd also love a super slim and light 18" for massive screen traveling. Although it seems manufactures are allergic to even 17.3 for light laptops.
Same I don't get it how it is the year 2024 now and there is virtually no difference in screens still, 20 years ago we were all playing on oled screens on our PSP's tf is going on? I just got a mini led screen laptop and that alone was hard enough to get.

This laptop has main issues and you didn't mention all of them: Interfere between sound outputs/speakers and jack3.5mm and Fn function keys including RGBs and touchpad when turning on and off (Electrical interference: When you press certain Fn key combinations that I mentioned above, the laptops send an unexpected small electrical signal through the keyboard that is picked up by the audio system and translated into "noise"). It has very bad ergonomy for typing (the standard size for hand support is about 9CM, but this laptop has more than 11cm hand support tail below the keyboard which is super annoying when typing. It's very heavy and the charger is huge. the webcam does not support Windows Hello. Ram support is locked on DDR5 4800 and it does not support DDR5 5600. There is 2 useless Thunderbolt USBs back there and you can not use them to charge your laptop (even while off) and get rid of that heavy 330W charger anywhere. You just keep saying aluminum body but you never mentioned how thermal conductive and bad it is. It get hot and cold based on the conditions and it's not comfortable at all. THESE ARE THINGS THAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU TO ADD.
The fan noise chart at 13:55 means absolutely nothing without temp/performance included. You also sorted the table by max fan speed volume. Who the hell runs the fans maxed out.
i run the fans maxxed out whenever i game, and its not a performance chart its fan noise chart... i dont think Frames per decibal is a metric anyone is looking for.. fan noise is not an issue to a large sum of people buying these gaming laptops, they have headphones on anytime the fans come off of idle anyway
what's the point of complaining so much about the fan noise, every laptops have fan speed adjustability, just put on quite mode, but for those who need extra performance, its a bonus for them.

The Helios 16 is specced exactly to your Helios 18, down to the Raid 0 SSDs. Now I'm stuck, design wise, I prefer the Helios 16, RGB wise I prefer Legion Pro 7. Lol.
Hello @JarrodsTech, Can you try to test PD function in laptops that support it? I noticed some PD laptops(example tuf a15 2023) battery is getting weared really fast because using this function
Great review as always Jarrod, just wanted to know would it be smart to judge the helios 16 based on this review or does size make a big difference on preformance and build quality? 🤔
Hey Jarrod, can you review the Acer Nitro 5 3070ti, its on sale here and seems great value but i am worried about its thermals and build. I'm sure many people would watch that.
Could you please make best budget gaming laptops around 1000 or less US dollars. Black friday is coming and we would love to grab the best one. Love your content❤❤❤keep it up
Yeah, wow, there is a lot of wasted space in that laptop. I agree that having a micro sd card in a laptop that big, with that much empty space inside, is a weird choice. And the battery -- when you're already at 7 pounds and you're an 18-inch laptop, AND you have that much empty space all around the 90wh battery, not having a 99wh battery just seems like a poor decision. (I also don't like the small right shift key; i know most people don't care about that though.)
I have the G18 Strix (non-Scar) and I am loving the 18" form factor. I do wish they'd utilize the extra space for an extra M.2 or something, but overall I'm happy with it. It just BARELY fits in my bag, so this one might not have fit haha. Asus and Acer have the worst mobile BIOS. Can't set anything noteworthy. I have to use 3rd party software if I want to try and lock my CPU frequencies and it still occasionally dips even with speedstep and c-states disabled (probably a power cap issue. Haven't had time to dig into it).
could be windows power mode. if its in performance mode, and throttlestop shows 0 speedshift then it shouldn't downclock.... or atleast thats how it used to be years ago hahaha
@@EpicBunty I've tweaked all the windows settings, and again, had to use a 3rd party software to disable C-states and max out frequency target. Setting 100/100 in windows didn't lock anything. So dumb. Even with it locked, cores fluctuation. occasionally significantly. I wouldn't care, but I use an audio application that's sensitive to it (it's poorly coded but it's the one i'm used to haha). My temps are good so I may try a voltage offset to see if it helps, but I don't like doing anything voltage in mobile stuff.
ah, I see. well good luck hope u find a solution. maybe there is a setting in windows which gives priority to the application, like there are for GPUs ? also in task manager there are settings like that I think perhaps those may help. I am still running on windows 10 and one of the older i7s without the newer P cores/E cores but just trying to help.@@misterringer
@@EpicBunty all good. I've dug into those options but nothing is really making a difference so far. I'm about to disable the E-cores and see if that does anything haha. Sad to have to leave so much performance on the table. too late to return it. Alternatively, I'd pay someone to get me a modded bios that exposed the CPU frequency and C-state settings.
Hi I’m currently contemplating whether to get this laptop. I heard that there’s stuttering issues with acer predator helios 18 ph18-71. If so, is it addressed in the newer acer predator helios 18 ph18-72 ?
just tried the 2024 model with 4080 and noticed no stuttering, the only thing that happened was after maybe 8 hours of running overwatch on everything maxed on the 1440p screen the app froze and I had to restart it so I don't know what that was from if that was the computer or an app issue. I ended up returning it and getting the 4090 version that also had the mini led screen because it was on sale for just 150 dollars more. the system latency is really low it feels really nice to play on.
Torx screws aren't as easy to strip (especially accidentally). Imo, stop 'taking off half a point' for it- someone without a relatively basic set of drivers is probably better off not opening up a device they paid a lot of money for.
I would like to buy a 18 inch laptop but all of them are pretty expensive so far. It would be nice to have options in the 1200-1500 USD category. They start over 2000 in my country.
@@kiyoponnnbruh. Stop recommending to go get a desktop for someone who's clearly looking for a laptop. They obviously prioritize the portability of it that's why they're on the lookout for one. 😂
@@JarrodsTech I think Acer hurt themselves by not sending you their miniLED model. It's the best thing the Helios has going for it. Oh well, their loss. Keep up the great work!
I have the Helios 16 4080 and Enabling performance boot mode in the registry and modifying from aggressive to disabled or to efficient aggressive greatly improves the temp for the Helios 16 up to 20c less during gaming and does not effect performance.
I was set to buy the asus rog 4080 went into best buy and was shocked at how horrendously ugly it is in person, it's the most ugly depressing LIGHT grey color it almost looks morbid. No way I could look at that after spending 2k+. The mini led asus rog is a dark grey almost black and looks much better but it's close to 3k. Also the sales between the two brands the acer can get significantly cheaper. The alienware has a really nice build of the actual laptops and sometimes really good sales but the screens suck in comparison and full price a rip off. The MSI are out to lunch with their prices. There really aren't many choices for 18 inch screens and higher end graphics cards in reasonable prices. The acer ends up being by far the best reasonable priced 18 with good screen and not ugly either was my findings. Bestbuy just got the 4090 mini led screen 18 inch acer for the price of the 4080 no mini led screen asus for reference. The lenovo white ice glossy laptop with the oled screen is the nicest Iaptop I've ever seen I would have wanted that in a heartbeat if it came in larger that 16 inches I would have even settled for 17 inch I don't get it with laptop brands they need to get their act together.
I saw online that acer laptops have screen flickering issue after 2 or 3 years. I have the same issue. After being an acer fan for more than a decade im very disappointed...
After noticing this is like the only affordable 18" I realized they don't make an 18" with a 4050. Wonder if they are just trying to not be cheap or are just trying to make you buy up and make you not be cheap. lol
Same ports as the Helios 16 with RTX 4070 by the looks of it. Also yes that Predator boot sound is obnoxious, try listening to that on repeat during Windows updates, argh, glad it could be disabled. Seeing inside, it looks like a bit of wasted space where they could have opted for better cooling management. I'm disappointed that Eco mode can't be used while plugged in & the placement of the Predator Sense key on all models.
Why did you remove both the legion slim 5's from the game performance tests? They both performed better than the Acer nitro 5 and you have included it in the comparison.
I decide each video which laptops to add as there are too many to add them all. My decision is based on what I think is most useful in relation to the laptop being reviewed.
Hi I need some help I can't decide what laptop I should go for I really need your help so I have found a asus rog strix g16 for 1.3k i9 with 24 cores which goes up to 5.6ghz and rtx 4070 with 140watts ram is 32gb 5600mhz cl40 screen 1920x1200 165hz but I want to know am I better of getting a acer helios 18 Intel Core i9 13900HX processor, one of the fastest laptop CPUs available! This is paired with 16GB of fast DDR5 RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD as well as an 8GB Full 140W RTX 4070 GPU or should I get a lenovo legion 7i Inte l Core i9 13900HX processor, with 24 cores and 32 threads This is paired with 32GB of newest DDR5-5600 RAM as well as a 140W Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU. Lol he 😂does I thought I was the only one.He makes you be discouraged on buying any laptop lol.The Zephyrs M16 tho he said was the best he’s used or seen
The Asus scar 18 does cost a bit more for virtually everything the same especially watching the sales between the two. Also the deal breaker for me was just how ugly the color of the scar 18 was it's the most depressing grey color. If I'm paying over 2k for a gaming laptop the color of the thing needs to at least be not offensive, and the deep black on the acer is decent. But in reality almost all of the commonly found larger gaming laptops don't have woah I want that finishes, I wish there were more that looked like that white ice glossy finish I think the smaller lenova has I mean it's 2024 now come on. Also recently looking at laptops I'm shocked they still don't have oled when 20 years ago we were all gaming on oled psp screens... ridiculous. Screen and speakers should be always near the top of the priority on premium laptops it's what you see and hear with how you interact with the world yet it's not which is absurd.
We have folding screen for laptops. Why not just not put that in gaming laptop and not having this monstuosity?! I like to go ourside for productivity but i want bigger screen!
Are you ever going to review the ASUS TUF Gaming A16 with the Ryzen 9 7940hs RX 7700s? My local microcenter has a few in stock and the price looks good, and I would like some thoughts/opinions on it before buying it

I'm sure many people would watch that.
Acer helios 18 vs Lenovo legion 7i pro vs MSI GE 78HX Raider, which one is better?
Hello
I love your videos
But i have a question
What do you think of acer aspire 7
Hey Jarrod, i re-enabled Core iso in my laptop. Would it still hold back performance today or no??
Still no custom fan curve customization.
Hey jarrod, do you have any plan to review omen 16?
I was considering this laptop but was way too impatient and ended up buying an Aorus 17H with the RTX 4080 back in March lol
I’m planning on buying the 16, shd I buy that one or this?
so raid0 in this laptop based on 2x nvme works good? Thinking now to use raid0 or 2 seperate 4TB drives...
Could you please make best budget gaming laptops around 1000 or less US dollars. Black friday is coming and we would love to grab the best one. Love your content❤❤❤keep it up
is it better or LENOVO LEGION 5 pro with same specs i wish you answer ❤
Yeah, wow, there is a lot of wasted space in that laptop. I agree that having a micro sd card in a laptop that big, with that much empty space inside, is a weird choice. And the battery -- when you're already at 7 pounds and you're an 18-inch laptop, AND you have that much empty space all around the 90wh battery, not having a 99wh battery just seems like a poor decision. (I also don't like the small right shift key; i know most people don't care about that though.)
Can you tell me if a 3070ti is worth it over a 4060 at the same price?
Did you also review the 16 ? Is it equivalent to lenovo 7 series ? And if yes which is better in your opinion ?
I did the Neo 16 but not the 16: ruclips.net/video/Kch1PY6XcmQ/видео.html
What's best laptop under INR 2 lac for AI and machine learning model j
Hey Jarrod, do you think it's worth picking this up for $1599? It is the Helios 16 and I was worried about temps and performance
Are going to add Germany 🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪 to your website ?
Torx screws aren't as easy to strip (especially accidentally). Imo, stop 'taking off half a point' for it- someone without a relatively basic set of drivers is probably better off not opening up a device they paid a lot of money for.
I would like to buy a 18 inch laptop but all of them are pretty expensive so far. It would be nice to have options in the 1200-1500 USD category. They start over 2000 in my country.
it might be cheaper to build a desktop with a used gpu
@@kiyoponnnbruh. Stop recommending to go get a desktop for someone who's clearly looking for a laptop. They obviously prioritize the portability of it that's why they're on the lookout for one. 😂
If you rate the sound of Acer Helios 18 (2023) on a ten-point scale, how many points will you give it?
Too bad Acer wouldn't send you the Predator Helios 16, because I think it's decent, especially that 4080 with Mini LED model!
Yeah we were really keen to try it, a lot of people have been asking for it. Hopefully we get a 14th gen refresh or what ever happens early next year.
@@JarrodsTech I think Acer hurt themselves by not sending you their miniLED model. It's the best thing the Helios has going for it. Oh well, their loss. Keep up the great work!
you mean me? HAHAH@@JarrodsTech
I have the Helios 16 4080 and Enabling performance boot mode in the registry and modifying from aggressive to disabled or to efficient aggressive greatly improves the temp for the Helios 16 up to 20c less during gaming and does not effect performance.
Hi. Do you have a link on how to do this? I just ordered the same machine.
Tell me, is the performance in games good? I want to buy it
@mohanadaljunaibi2563 performance is good just keep in mind you cannot undervolt the cpu

Helios 300 3070Ti what a beast fighting against all these behemoths!
Do you recommend buying this or the asus rog strix 18 4080
Can you review the regular HP Omen 16 2023 with RTX 4060 ? (Not the transcend)
Does it come with the fan rattling
(Joking about helios from 2021)
I saw online that acer laptops have screen flickering issue after 2 or 3 years. I have the same issue. After being an acer fan for more than a decade im very disappointed...
After noticing this is like the only affordable 18" I realized they don't make an 18" with a 4050. Wonder if they are just trying to not be cheap or are just trying to make you buy up and make you not be cheap. lol
Any incoming review about A15 2023?? 🤔
wow, great thorough review!
@Jarrods Tech how to repair my 2 minor dents from best buy canada or acer global itw support?
does this price is same on all best buy locations.
Any chance an Acer Triton 17x 4090 review is coming?
“Aaron earned an iron urn” with this laptop
Will this laptop be delivered to me in Ireland?
Darn, just bought the asus g18, 4080 T.T is this better?
How's the legion 5 15.6 ryzen 7 7735hs 4060
Can you do full review for it😅
does the predator helios 16 comes with a mini led panel in the 4080 version?
Nice review as always. Try the predator triton 17x if possible and definitely waiting for your legion 9 review
Not sure if I'll end up with more Acer this year, hopefully have more opportunity next year.
have anyone tried to repaste or replace the liquid metal and see improve cooling?
Why did you remove both the legion slim 5's from the game performance tests? They both performed better than the Acer nitro 5 and you have included it in the comparison.
I decide each video which laptops to add as there are too many to add them all. My decision is based on what I think is most useful in relation to the laptop being reviewed.
@@JarrodsTech okay dude I was just confused for a bit
Hi I need some help I can't decide what laptop I should go for I really need your help so I have found a asus rog strix g16 for 1.3k i9 with 24 cores which goes up to 5.6ghz and rtx 4070 with 140watts ram is 32gb 5600mhz cl40 screen 1920x1200 165hz but I want to know am I better of getting a acer helios 18 Intel Core i9 13900HX processor, one of the fastest laptop CPUs available! This is paired with 16GB of fast DDR5 RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD as well as an 8GB Full 140W RTX 4070 GPU or should I get a lenovo legion 7i Inte
l Core i9 13900HX processor, with 24 cores and 32 threads This is paired with 32GB of newest DDR5-5600 RAM as well as a 140W Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU. It can run RTX 4070 please if anyone can help me it would be much appreciated
Jarrod is it worth it to take 7940hs and 4070 over 7735hs and 4060 if it has 150$ difference I'm talking about asus tuf a15 here
Not Jarrod but id personally pick up the 4070 model
Also not Jarrod but yes it's worth to pick the 4070 one since $150 difference isn't too costly, in context with those specs.
Jarrod has a problem with every laptop he reviews.
Please which one should I go for, Asus strix scar 16 or Razer blade 16 2023
Wow you have a website. Nice. Good to know.
My local microcenter has a few in stock and the price looks good, and I would like some thoughts/opinions on it before buying it

can you review acer nitro 17? laptop is just under $1000
what really is the point of reviewing these expensive high end laptops. When its priced so high it pretty much has everything unlike mid range where you have to know where the manufacturer cut corners. In high end you can just buy anything and youll be satisfied.
