Please keep it up your good work at your best.Good luck!

Wow, this is a very comprehensive video on compression technologies for making pro sounding music, and Bill Holland is a natural born teacher, impressive amount of knowledge shared in this video, clear and concise without any fluff, any lay person can glean useful information out of this great video!
Gearwire would be wise to feature Bill Holland on more music production tutorials.

Not sure about the SC enable, but this is one of the better tutorials on the DBX compressor…..Very simple explanation on it's operation….. That's one thing I believe the "Teckys" forget…. When they are explaining a product like the DBX, a Tascam Digital recorder, a Vox Modeling amp, or anything on that list that has more than three knobs on it, They are not talking to Engineers was a Master's degree, they are talking to a bunch of Musicians!! … I've been a Musician for many, Many years and played with some of the best….. Just because you are a good musician doesn't mean you have the ability to understand the high tech end of the business. That's a whole other part of the brain!….. So on behalf of all dedicated Musicians, Thank you for a tutorial explaining the DBX using common sense , not forgetting that Musicians are using this product, not Rocket scientists!!……….By the way, this is a great product… We use this compressor in our practice room and we have achieved a good, a balanced sound! … excellent!!!

for home use, buy one of these from your local buy and sell, i will say, for 150 dollars used, one can not get a better dual channel unit. great value, and it works good.

wow this is the updated version with gate release time, thus it allows a smoother transition to lower ambient noise levels during tacet sections. I still prefer to use these for drums, bass and percussive sounds. it's very fast and clean.

I use one of these inline last with Marshall JTM and a JCM 800. I can get higher frequencies with out the feedback, buzz, click and hiss. This helps with balancing out floor effects, even older floor effects. At the end of the day I can play as loud as the amp will go but no feedback or any other unwanted noise.

You lost me when you said SC Enable made your voice smoother. Its Side-Chain enable... Meaning the gate acting on a sound would be triggered by a different source. Why make tutorials when you don't know what you're talking about?

Thanks, I normally just use a preamp to a tube pre into the laptop and compress on the software programs. So is it better to hook the mic in directly then run it to the preamp? Or to hook the muc into the preamp and then the compressor to the laptop?

I recently purchased a different model (the dbx 266xs), and purchased it to reduce the loud commercials from the cable company and loud music when watching a Netflix movie. I will review this video tomorrow and hope it directly corresponds to my particular machine. Thanks.

"IF I YELL REALLY LOUD YOU'LL NOTICE IT'S AT THE SAME VOLUME"! This would be because you're yelling at the same volume, since the gain reduction meter doesn't even engage. Oh dear.

I've heard this low cost compressor used to great effect on recordings. Never used it myself but would definitely consider buying and using it without any concerns. Great video too I learned how the sidechain works on hardware compressors. Thanks for the upload. Wish you would do a full feature review of the Focusrite Platinum Compounder...

After watching your vid. I liked a lot. Keep sharing.
I'm a mobile/home DJ. I've wanted a L/C to controll the unexpected highs and drop offs when I play a set.
.From what you have described. I can insert the DBX L/C into my EQ output and then plug my powered Mackie speakers into the L/c to achieve a smooth level sounding output.
Does this sound like a correct application to perform?
This would also work with recording onto CD- R and Tape machines.
Your response would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Leon Addison.

  • @runninghoove

That's the easiest part, plugging in some XLR and TRS cables located in the rear of the unit.
It's understanding compression theory and configuring the compressor for use in the real world that's the hardest part.

i just bought one of these 2nd hand for £90. I used to have a Focusrite Compounder which cost £325, and the DBX new would be cheaper than this anyway - personally it pisses all over the Compounder for the money, instantly more satifying results, great machine.

Wow, this guy does not know how to use this compressor. SC enable is for external side chaining. Also he was waiting for the threshold light to turn yellow indicating the signal was going above the threshold but you notice it didn't. There was not enough gain going into the compressor. He ignored this and moved right along.

Is 'gating' just controlling the realese then ?

    • @webmasterasg
      @webmasterasg 8 лет назад

No. The gate silences the input when the volume is lower than what you set. So you put it between the noise room and your voice or instrument volume. When your voice or instrument is not playing it will cut the noise of the room. When the volume gets higher the audio wil pass trough.

Scratch what the video describes, the person didn't really understand the unit, or even proper gain staging. The gate "closes" (mutes anything below the set threshold), and the "Release" function is to set how long it takes for the gate to close again.

Guys before you doing something stupid like this read about line input, mic input and instrument input and what difference they have and why you will not want to connect microphone directly into compressor! By the way i would like to see how you will hook up condenser mic (+48 V) about DBX 286XL i know its have onboard pre amplifier and that is ok to connect straight into it!

Apparently the guy in the video hasn't a clue. When he had it set limiting, and he was yelling into the 57, clipping the audio, he wasn't even getting any gain reduction on the meters, What an awful demo.
What he was saying was correct in theory, but the compressor was not doing what he thought it was doing.

I need your advice since you already own a DBX. I already have a 286s that I use for vocals. In a singer-songwriter set-up where I also want to play a mic'd up acoustic guitar simultaneously as I'm singing but also want to have the acoustic guitar mic to have a seperate compression with its own tweaked levels, do I get another 286s for this purpose or a dbx 166xl? Which would you get for just the mic'd up guitar? It seems that the 286s works fine but would the 166xl work better for this purpose? Pretend that I'm recording into a 4-track cassette TEAC 144 (from 1979) recorder. So no DAW no effects, dry everything. Just raw but even-sounding. Which would you choose? I heard the de-esser also works to tame the brightness of brighter acoustic guitars.
