Why am I watching this? I already own this thing, lol.
Beacause we all need reassurance$$$
is it like the 286? in that it seems to bloat the low frequencies a bit?
Do you recommend it for tracking vocals?
Bias confirmation
I just said the same thing then look at the comments lol
People say this compressor doesn't sound good - sounds good to me - thanks for the useful demo!
It IS good, it's just, that 166 series and up are even better.
@@s.g.3042 theyre not made anymore are they?
@@whytewavestudios3039 You can still buy them new at Thomann for example.
Good enough for the early Wu-Tang albums! :)
Thank you. Your video was a great help in my decision in purchasing this unit to marry up with my existing dual UA 710 Twin Finity setup.
Thanks for posting this! Sounds really good. This actually seals the deal because I didn't want to spend the extra bucks on the 1066 (also a great product). Great song at the end. It is kinda of reminiscent of David Byrne.
I am thinking of buying this one (and the Alesis)..I heard enough, thank you.
in the Master mix? very interesting ... usually soft compressors are used for that job. and this 266XS does just that. I will buy one. the good thing is that they are super cheap. great video. This shows that cheap equipment is sometimes not all bad.

still the best demo on this model. dbx 266xs. great on vocals, guitars, Overheads
considering to use DBX166 live on acoustic Guitar. sounds nice! and quite useful!

Xcellent demo, better than the Factory! Thank you.
Are you kidding Bob Tracey? Excellent demo? Really? He did explain anything about the DBX266 XL. All he did was play music and push buttons. While I know what those buttons are and its purpose there a more people who watched this video and didn't know what button was for was purpose. Come on man this is not a great video. He didn't explain anything. Not even the purpose the equipment serves. SMH. I am going to have to do a video to show what a real review is.

So cool. Someone near me selling one for dirt cheap and it is hard for me to pass that up.

Best demo. Sleeper gear here.
I got this and a RNP. I'm trying to wire my Patchbay. I have the A and B channels going to Ch 1 and 2 on the dbx..I'm trying to figure out how to have one of the dbx channels as it's on Input, instead. I'm assuming that can work. Patchbays are so weird to get my head around. Thanks for the easy to understand demo of the dbx..I have never had a rack mount Comp before, so it's helpful to see how it's used, in different situations.

i agree. I don't want a lesson in compression. I might not even want opinions on just how great/shitty it is. But I do want to know how it sounds. because at the end of the day, it is all color.
Great video review/demo . I found it very interesting and useful, thanks!
Great! Thanks!
Is it worth investment for studio mixing? Can it represent 160a?
how do you hook up your compressor to your mixer?
Thats a sweet egg maker.

How did you connect the comp? thru Inserts?
What compression should i use if i want to compress the audio player??
My question is what is the answer?

Thank you! Very informative.
Good video! I need your advice. I already have a 286s that I use for vocals. In a singer-songwriter set-up where I also want to play a mic'd up acoustic guitar simultaneously as I'm singing but also want to have the acoustic guitar mic to have a seperate compression with its own tweaked levels, do I get another 286s for this purpose or a dbx 166xl? Which would you get for just the mic'd up guitar? It seems that the 286s works fine for voxals but would the 166xl work better for mic'd acoustic guitar? Pretend that I'm recording into a 4-track cassette TEAC 144 (from 1979) recorder. So no DAW, no effects, dry everything. Just raw but even-sounding. Which machine would you choose? I heard the de-esser on the 286s also works to tame the brightness of brighter acoustic guitars.
please ..... dual gate dbx 363x review
@Jamie Clark: sorry can't reply on your comment - somehow the reply button is missing? Strange... Anyhow, the 2 units have different colours. Wouldn't say one is better than the other. In my opinion, he dbx266 sounds a little better on drums (fatter sounding, more punch if you push it) and the 3630 is pretty clean/neutral. Use it often on parallel compression for vocals.
few questions is that good for fattening ur mix ? and can I connect it with 2i2 interface and what else I need to connect it to my audio interface
A compressor/limiter is a great way to "fatten a mix" or bring certain elements "Closer"; by attenuating the loud peaks & transients, you can utilize the make up gain to make the quieter parts louder. This allows you to get a more consistent and even amplitude across the given passage of audio.

Hi, do the single mono and stereo tracks of the loop go through the analog mixer or just DAW at 266xs? Thanks
I'm using the 266XL in over easy mode to run DAW pre masters through with a mixer and SSL 2+ IT give a $4000 gear sound for only $400

Can I use the Limiter/Compressors to smooth out the highs and lows of a dj mixers output to PA speakers and record out to a recording device or laptop? Interested in you thoughts.
Yes, and people suggest something like a bbe sonic maximizer but if you're coming out of Serato or something similar there will already be a limiter on the master fader...which people complain about. Make of it what you will
Sounds great!
Any serious plugin can eat for this breakfast!
Do you already use the sidechain insert in that particular demo.?
Would this be a good compressor for reducing background noise on a condenser microphone, kind of like a noise gate, for plugging into a mixer's aux send/return? I was thinking of getting a noise gate pedal for my mixer, but a tech guy at the music store down my street told me how that may cause distortion issues. Would this be the right path if I wanted to reduce background noise (my computer fans to be exact)?
I would not use a compressor/gate for that purpose. Once you exceed the threshold of the gate it opens up and you will still hear all the fan noise in your recording.
First I would try to get a little more distance between the mic and your computer. You can also try to built a small DIY vocal booth with blankets or acoustic foam. This may reduce the noise quite a lot.
Another option would be a Noise Suppression plugin (e.g. Waves WNS) but it depends on the material you're recording. Works quite good for voice but not that good on instruments.
Hello my friend I have dbx 266s and I need to how to run a big microphone Tak hangings of it with the knowledge that the small microphone runs it
+طاهر الجعفري You mean a microphone that needs Phantompower (+48V)? You'll need a Mic Preamp for that. After that you can run the signal through the dbx 266.
Great video !!! :-) Thanks
So if I have an Eq....no point in getting this ???
Super
If you needed dbx286?
THIS is a DEMO
Wonderful 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Someone likes the talking heads
hi , what compressor like you most on this range ? Rnc or this Dbx ? i record usaly bass vocalsand guitas , what do you recomend me?
I like the dbx on drums and bass. But if you need it also for vocals and guitars I'd go with the RNC. It is a little cleaner sounding and the "Super Nice" mode is great for acoustic guitar compression.
The compressor in Audacity don't work that good for me so i thought about buying a real compressor. But the question is what's the difference between a real compressor and the 1 in the Daw or software like in Pro tools Garage Band and Ableton ? And what's the best real compressors to keep my voice leveled with the beat ????
It's actually just a matter of tone and taste. It depends what sound you want to achieve. Some hardware compressors still sound a little different than their plugin clones but the gap got pretty narrow these days. If you want to stick with a plugin, try the Waves CLA compressor series. Their 1176 version sounds great! If you want to buy a hardware compressor I'd look into the Warm WA76 or the Fredenstein V.A.S Compressor. Both great for vocals!
To double check so these compressors keep the voice leveled while I'm rapping at the same time or even with the beat on ? Like in other words if i put the mic in this or these compressors do it automatically compress my voice or verse evenly so it don't clip cause sometimes i get too loud if i move to close to the mic and i want to level it down to make a even smooth sound ?
Yes, basically that's what a compressor does. However, you have to use a mic pre in front of it, as the compressor itself does not take mic signals.
if that's the case it's better to get this than using the compressor that's in the Audacity Software because in the Audacity software it will compress the 1st part of the verse the last part it will be to high and it shows it in the wave link.i tried all i know that can leave it to normal or compress the whole verse evenly but some of it still became uneven. In Audacity the only way i know right now is to compress part by part and that's takes to long so i think if i get this or any compressor that's good like this will make the job so much more faster and easier.Esp to keep the voice leveled so where it don't clip and thank you so much for the help.
Well, I usually have the verse and chorus separated, as it often takes different compressor settings. Try also move a little back from the microphone when the loud part starts! The hardware compressor may help you to even out the dynamics, but don't compress to much. Once it's recorded you can't undo it :-)
I was thinking about getting a 266xs to reduce the hiss from microphones by using the noise gate. But I think once the gate is open, I can still hear the hiss. What would you use to remove microphone hiss on live audio? How about airconditioning noise in the venue? Do you use EQ for these? Thanks!
Right, once the gate opens the hiss is back. Live setup is tricky because a lot of elements can cause hiss. Long or faulty cables, gain structure, cheap mixing boards and PA systems.
Check gain structure, run everything at "proper" hot levels, then reduce the master fader to compensate.
Use good mic preamps with a lot of clean gain (eg. Focusrite ISA)
EQ can help but it will also muffle the sound when you decrease the higher frequencies. So I would not suggest to do this unless the hiss is already on bright source.
@@ZedMartyProduction Thank you very much! Really appreciate it. Sorry for the newbie question but do you mean I need to put a separate external preamp between my mixer and the microphone? I was told my mixer's (Behringer X1204USB) preamp (Xenyx) is a bit noisy, but I have no comparison because it's the only one I have. Suppose I stay with this Behringer mixing board, will an external preamp between the microphone and the mixer improve noise (increasing gain on the separate preamp and setting the Behringer's gain to zero)? Can your recommend something more affordable than the Focusrite Isa? What do you think of the Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200?
You know why it's placed above the Alesis? Because it shits on it.

I'd have liked it better if he'd described what control he was dinking with, what the name meant, what it actually did and what effect it was having on the sound.
Al Walskey that would be a compressor tutorial, they are all over the internet, this was intended to be a product demo, intended for people who know how to listen for the changes and decide whether or not they like the sound enough to purchase it for themselves.
Do you like this compressor? I'm considering inserting an analog compressor between my preamp and audio interface. I track vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and bass. Never drums. I was thinking dbx 160x, but it seems better suited to drums than vocals. I'm curious about the Klark Teknik 2A, but I'm concerned about reliability and I'm not sure I even need to spend that much. This one sounds great in your demo, but I'm reading reviews from users that don't like the sound. What are your thoughts for this purpose? I like that it has a noise gate. In your demo I didn't notice the sound getting thinner as some users have reported.
It is a nice comp for the money - I like it on drums, bass or parallel compression. I see no problems with tracking vocals, however I would not compress too much on the way in as you can hear the compression working quite a bit. The comp has quite a distinct sound to it.
If you're looking for an affordable tracking compressor check out the FMR RNC. It is very clean and in the super nice mode you can hardly hear the compression artifacts even with a lot of gain reduction.
The Klark Teknik is a great unit, I have a video about that too on my channel. Even if you don't compress the signal and just pass it through you get a nice saturation due to the tubes. If I had to choose between those 3 I would take the KT-2A for vocals. You can't go wrong with that actually!
@@ZedMartyProduction Thanks so much!
how to use just as a limiter?
Threshold: desired limiting level
Ratio: infinite
Attack: fastest or as fast as desired
Release: fast/very quick

How to EQ bass
Newbie question: what's the difference between the 266 and 286? Can you recommend the 266?
266 is a stereo compressor and the 286 is a mono preamp with a compressor, eq and de-esser.

Quick question. My gain reduction level indicator remains lit up (4 red levels). No matter what I do it stays lit up. Is there something wrong with this DBX 266xs? I am running a DBX286s with the DBX266 as an insert with the final signal going into a focus rite 18i8
Hm that's strange! Even with a ratio of 1:1 and a threshold fo +20? How hot is the signal coming in from the 286s?
The Preamp on my DBX 286 is set at 48db and I am using a Shure SM7B. However I just now discovered something. If I turn the Expander Gate (on the 266xs) to -60db the 4 red lights on the reduction level indicator are no longer lit up.
Ah ok, well turn it completely off - full counter clockwise.
I regret selling my 3630, the earlier version with tubes. :p
Hi, LBM. Is this satisfactory for compressing vocals, i.e. evening out the levels? Thanks.
Yes, works also quite good for vocals.

I have a question and I hope someone can guid me. I have an audio interface & a mixer. can I hook this Compressor up to my mixer? I somehow blew up my shure beta 52A mic. When I plug in my headphones into the mixer itself it has awesome sound. But when I have it hooked up into the interface & Mac I can’t get that clear sound. Sounds to loud and I can’t hit hard or else it’ll hiss.
Based off the info you’ve given me it sounds like your mic is too close to your kit and it’s feeding too much signal into the mic. I’m planning on setting this up too. I’m going to try using this as a Master Mix Buss Comp after I’ve applied Waves NLS to the master track in my DAW (Ableton) - to give it a more analog sound. Basically my routing idea is: Interface Outputs 1/2 -> Compressor Inputs 1/2 -> Compressor Outputs 1/2 --> Mixer Inputs 1/2 -> Mixer Main Outs -> Whatever your last two Inputs are on your interface. Granted, this is my routing idea for Master Bus printing back into my DAW. I’d be using 1/4” TRS Cables.

Hey Zed Marty, nice video showing the compression capabilities of the DBX 266xs; I own the same compressor and have to say it sounds great for recording applications. Recently come across the 166Xs which I believe has the same controls plus a limiter. Was wondering if you have any experience with the 166xs and if you did, would you say it is similar to the 266xs or better with more features?
Hi, thank you! I did not try the 166, but as far as I know it is a little better than the 266. The internal circuit is quite a bit different from what I have read.
