Thank you for sharing your knowledge and opinion. I’m helping my brother repair/remodel his home. What started as a small repair has turned into a full remodel. You have helped me with my knowledge and techniques. Especially with skim coating and popcorn removal. And I thank you very much. The ceilings have all been heavily painted with glossy thick paint. I found if I dry scrape the bumps only. It gives the water a pathway past the paint and into the texture mud, stuff, crap! And cuts down on water applications and soak times. Once again thank you.
Good information. For those who are getting rid of your popcorn ceiling. One thing to note there is a reason it is called Acoustic ceiling texture. The uneven nature of the texture eliminates some echo in the rooms. When you remove the texture your home may echo or be louder than it used to be. I use a method to scrape the texture that I find easier on me. Cover the floor and the route outside. Protect all surfaces so you do not leave footprints or dust. I get a couple of benches that puts my head up near the ceiling. I have a large shop vac 6.5 hp with two hoses and the rectangular head attachment. A flat knife that is slightly smaller in width than the shop vac head. Wet as much area as you can reach. Turn on the shop vac. Put the knife across one long edge of the vac head. The edge of the blade should be about half way across the opening. Push that whole thing through the texture. 95 percent of the falling texture will be vacuumed up immediately. Less dust, less clean up, less chance of tracking that stuff onto other surfaces. No offense to you Kilted Guy, your methods work and work well but I am not going to do one like that again. For me the shop vac is the way to go.
I tried it and if it’s been painted it comes off in sheets and clogs the vac head. Plus i didn’t like how it trashed my vacuum house but with unpainted popcorn it can work. I have shot a video showing multiple ways to remove it and that is one i tried. Just not fast enough for me as a pro. I scraped 900 sq get off on that job in less than 2 hours with my way. Then another 39 minutes to sweep it up. But I am about speed and ease. Everyone has to do what works for them. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks for the video! Any idea what kind of problems I will find if I removed my sample piece of popcorn ceiling and found the ceiling underneath is painted (dark pink)?
So you would dry scrape it all if it comes off easy and not bother wetting? I have a bedroom that the paper is showing in a sq foot. Another area it is cracking
Awesome channel, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience... quick question, I have very heavy knockdown on my ceilings, could I lightly hit it with heavy sandpaper to get a lighter texture/knockdown?
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thanks so much for the response, I must talk to my interior designer (wife) but may give it a go/test in one of the bathrooms. Merry Christmas from sunny South Florida!!
What’s faster scraping the popcorn, fixing defects, then priming and painting or skim coating 2 coats sanding twice then priming? I have huge rooms that have popcorn and I’m dreading doing anything with it. Overhead work sucks.
Well, I've removed over 500 of them, and 99% of the time I wet scrape, sand, repair and texture as done right it's faster, cheaper and easier, plus isn't adding a layer of mud on everything which will likely crack over time.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thanks for the quick reply. Your input makes total sense, why coat over it and run the risk of cracking, adding weight to the ceiling, and all that work when you can just remove it, fix problem spots and prime. Sadly I have a lot of ceiling that’s popcorn and I want it gone but I don’t really want to spend 300 hours doing it when it can just be left there. Though I feel like smooth ceilings would be more appealing if I ever sell the house...
@@lh98 I have been searching for this answer!! I can get the popcorn down easily. So you just took down the popcorn, repair any problems, then prime, and then paint? Just like you I think it will make the house more appealiing.
If I remove the popcorn, repair any damage and sand it to a hand-smooth touch, can I prime and paint, or do you have to put on a thin coating of mud across the whole ceiling (like you did with the thick mud to cover the still-in-place popcorn)?
What is the name and contact information for the charity for vets you mention in a video, if they're insured, or need a house, etc.. I've watched so many of your videos in the last few days I can't remember which one the information was in. Thanks!!
Well the Gary Sinise Foundation helped us out a lot, which you can easily find on the internet. There's a local art group for veterans with a building, guitar room, woodworking room, etc if you want their information I can look it up.
I have removed the popcorn. I am now using a Wen sander to remove the residue. I have some minor damaged areas. Should I use a primer/sealer before I make these repairs?
