- A migratory shorebird that splits its year between Japan and Australia. This bird is dependent on mud banks foraging for aquatic beetles lave and worms. It's 7000km flight between Hokkaido and Australia is well documented. In this we study the bird during its Australian stay.
The detail Bruce provides is exceptional, from the swallowing mechanism to Latham's search for glory. Back in the '70's Take Matsuo and Hans Naarding were the first to postulate the bird's direct migratory flight from Japan to Australia, long before trackers were invented!
I learn something new each day. Thanks for the historical perspective.
Always fascinating to watch and learn more about our amazing birds of Australia. Thanks Bruce.
Thanks E. I suspect I learn more from birders like you. Bruce
