EEP - EEP - E-E-P! They have a very distinctive and fairly loud vocalization when they flush like a 60 mph bullet shot out of corkscrewed barrel . . . brings back memories. Note - close relative . . . Woodcocks and snipes belong to the same family, Scolopacidae: the sandpipers and relatives. But the American woodcock (Scolopax minor) and Wilson's snipe (Gallinago delicata) aren't identical. They're cousins whose differences you can see up close.
Thanks for this! Wow, I didn't know it was a real bird! I have 3 older brothers so, yeah, I've been snipe hunting. There I was holding the sack on the footpath, darkness closing in....actually the rest is a bit fuzzy but I'm pretty sure I caught a glimpse of them running toward home over on the other side of the pond and figured it out. lol
saw my first snipe ( in our neighborhood), 3 weeks ago in my backyard ,on the edge of the small lake--, got several great pics-got within 4 feet before he took off in their low zigzag pattern- lovely small bird
We have them in Challis, Idaho. We only hear them in the evenings & usually when the fields initially flood with irrigation. Sometimes they’re along the river when it’s really warm.
I'm from Finland, where we have other species of snipes. But during the last weeks, the unusually warm weather and western winds have brought a number of American feathered visitors to our shores. Wilson's Snipe has been spotted, along with American Black Duck, Black Scoter, Dark-Eyed Junco (the first one ever observed in Finland) and Ross's Goose. As you maybe know, Finland joined NATO one year ago - did Washington send these winged emissaries overseas to show us that America is not that far away, after all? If that's the case, I'd like to see some Blue Jays and Roadrunners, too!

Had one in my backyard yesterday (Auburn Washington). Took me a while to find out what it was. Amazing creature.
Thought I saw a timberdoodle yesterday but it was a snipe!

Blue Jays maybe, but that's a long way for a road runner to run!

I went snipe hunting quite often with young ladies when I was a teenager.
The snipes were not meant to be found.
