I'll be honest with you, it's getting a bit annoying. I know these Top 100 vids are getting a bit longer every year, but this is when I hunker down and watch every bit. It's like my Netflix at this point.
@@Toltendo I watch them over and over. 2023 was my favorite since Mike joined I would bet I've watched all 10 200 times at least. it's all downloaded on my phone. The longer the better IMO. I don't see those as the same thing at all, since people with Vit+Tusc already have everything from Essential, and those who were new were actively being told to get the Essentials and were unable to get the old one anymore.

@@JonReid01 In the case of Viticulture, all of the above. The Essential Edition was explicitly published as a replacement, and the original was no longer going to be published.
Very different thing! Viticulture Essential Edition came much later after the first Viticulture and isn't a variant meant to coexist it was a the same game packaged differently. I think the first edition even was a relatively small print run and nobody is forced to buy both and the Essential Edition has no gameplay content that the first edition plus expansion doesn't have.
I agree with Mike and Zee. Dune was so quick it has that its the same but this one card exclusive feel to Zee talks about. It is like if ti4 came out a year after the second expansion of ti3.
I’m totally with Mike. I bought Dune Imperium. It’s my favourite game ever. Then I bought the upgrade box. Then I bought the expansions. Then they announce a new version and basically market it as a second edition with updated rules and gameplay mechanics improvements etc. Honestly, it pissed me off and soured me on Dire Wolf.
Interesting discussion on Dune. I think the concern I have is the short timeframe between expansions from the first game and the new addition makes me feel sour about supporting all the products for the first game of the new game starts from a better place. Great content Dice Tower
This is how I felt when they had this same argument in last years list. I hadn’t got into the game(s) yet and was confused why they were selling both versions still. I wouldn’t have bothered with the game until a definitive second edition, but my friend got the original for free shortly after. That game has quickly become a favorite. I’m not going to bother with the other or the expansions until they make that definitive second edition down the road, which they most assuredly will because of what Mike and Zee are saying.
There are sooo many duel games lately... we need "Blue Moon" reprinted as a 2-4 player game just to go against the grain🤣 On a different Knizia note... we need to make "Tigris & Euphrates" part of the TOP 100 people! I vote it every year but I cannot make this happen on my own 😅
I’ve played both Dune games and still prefer the Imperium version with the expansion. I agree with Mike and Zee on the subject, especially when people basically tell you the first version is basically obsolete.
"Dune Imperium Uprising" is not a reprint nor a sequel nor an expansion. It is a variant with essentially only slight changes that is marketed in a way that essentially forces people to buy both games although they are essentially the same game. And it devalues the first game and was a kick into the faces of buyers of the first game. It's really not ok!
Dune immortality came out 2022, had a big box which made it "feel" like it was definitive and done, in the way it would all fit in the box. And then uprising came out in 2023, which many said is better, kinda giving a sour feeling after spending time getting imperium + all expansion + big box upgrade. A game which was perfectly fine and beloved. It just feels weird, and as if uprising devalues everything that came before. And it must be really confusing to people trying to get into the game for the first time.

Vindication's bloat has killed it for us. Like Tom said, the base game is so sharp and fun. Those miniatures are dumb and take up too much space on the base box. The box size was daunting and a hassle but it was worth fighting through to table the base game + pets + medallion action. All the bloat problems were compounded when we got the big white box with the other stuff. The experience of the game doesn't match the size of the box. We haven't played any of the new content (hamlets + chronicles) as a result sadly. Such a shame. I basically fully avoid games with modules as a result. Just tell me the best way to play the game. I'm not interested in modules.

The Disney version for Sheriff of Nottingham is the weirdest thing. Not all families want a game that's not just about bluffing and negotiation, but it's about 'payoffs and bribes'. I'm not saying it's not a game many families won't enjoy... but, it's one of the games I would think will benefit the least from a 'Disney' version
War for Arrakis replaces War of the Ring for me - it's faster, more asymmetric, better looking, and more variable. Big fan, they knocked it out of the park
Uprising has spies which is better, The combat's more impactful, The resources are more scarce, The balance is better, And the tempo is better. But yes if you already have and love Dune Imperium, you do NOT need to switch to Uprising.

To Mike's point about Dune ... there are a lot of Star Wars games, and if you're not into it you don't really know the difference between Star Wars Imperial Assault, Star Wars Outer Rim, Star Wars Rebellion, Star Wars Armada, Star Wars Legion, Star Wars the Deckbuilding Game, Star Wars the Card Game, etc. But Star Wars gets a pass for having so many variant games, for some reason. In Dune we have the 1978 Bill Eberle game and its 2019 remake which are best at 5-6p, and 2021 streamlined 2-4p edition with movie art; Dune: War for Arrakis , 2-4p (2 best) from Marco Maggi who designed War of the Ring; and Dune Imperium + Uprising (1-6p, 4 best) from Paul Dennen of Clank fame, these were released to match content with the two Dennis Villeneuve movies. Plus there are 3 expansions each for each of these! There are other less popular Dune games too, but these are the main ones. And they're all different, and they're all good!
In my opinion, on a very high level yes... but it's subtle, both rely on betting using limited information but both the nature of information (presence or absence of particular charecters in the pool vs position of gems and curses) and the mechanism of betting (bidding and outbidding with chips vs area majority kinda) are different... I would say that for me they have a similar spirit but Spectral is more thinky.

So it sounds like a stepping stone to transition people to War of the Ring. I love Arkham Horror the LCG. I hope they don't stop making content for it. Game sequels with iterative improvements are a boon to the hobby. Doubly so for excellent games like Dune: Imperium.
I don't mind new versions as long as they give people a way to upgrade an old version, this should be automatic.
