    Another mistake people often make is not putting drawers (instead of cupboards) wherever they will fit. Squatting down to rummage through a cupboard is not my idea of fun!

    the island has to be in relationship to the size of the kitchen, not a useless measurement. A size ratio, like how much room between other cupboards, minimum and maximum, door opening of appliances etc.

    • @Kaththee
      @Kaththee 3 года назад

      Yes but you don't want it to block the traffic flow by being too big. It is better to have two shorter islands and have better traffic flow than one long one that cuts the kitchen in half.

    I wish I would have known more before getting started about how to waterproof the floor below the sink and the wall behind it. In addition, I had no knowledge regarding moisture condensation in the space behind the sink wall or how do deal with it.
    The design lesson that worked for me was to leave the space above the sink countertop with no cabinets. Instead I used deep, tall cabinets on a separate wall for storage. This left me with lots of surface work area and a compact easy to reach storing space.

    My kitchen is very plain (fancy doors are expensive and also tend to gather dust) but the only mistake I made when I designed it was in the choice of door handles. I like the nice long length of the handles I have but I don't like their sharp edges (I bash my hands on them when cleaning if I'm not extra careful) and would now choose D-shape handles.

    We remodeled our kitchen ourselves (with the help of a couple friends for the heavy lifting). I did all the planning and ordering of the cupboards. It was almost 100% perfect. The only change we had to make was to reverse the opening direction of 1 door that hit the range hood. It did take longer than expected to get the cupboards which was an inconvenience. It worked out so well, that I also planned out my home office/dressing room with built in cupboards and we remodeled that room a few years later. My only regret is that my husband didn't listen to me on the amount and location of electrical plugs I needed. I ended up having to use several power strips for all of the computer equipment, TV, hair dryer, curling iron, etc.

    Tip #1 - put off the kitchen remodel until you can actually afford it. Taking out a loan is not "you can afford it". You can afford it means you can write a check for it when it's done without taking money from someone else.
    Tip #2 - if someone tells you that it's reasonable to throw away a kitchen every 20 years, tell them that you'd like them to install something good enough that you won't have to throw it away in 20 years. I've heard far too many people suggest that a $60K kitchen remodel (or money equivalent in the future) every 20 years is reasonable in a $275K house. It's sheer stupidity. Who are you impressing? Certainly not your heirs.

      Put off the kitchen remodel FOREVER unless there's a lot of damage. Too many people tearing out perfectly good, solid wood cabinets to put in junk that won't last 10 years.

      +Valley Home Improvement, Inc. I'll rarely take on a contractor for the remodeling/renovating of my home. I'm pretty good with hand AND brains, but yet not a pro. Therefor only for the main electricity and some of the plumbing, which is for now still above my capacity of knowledge, specially because everything needs to be to be legally approved (and okay for insurances) and such, is going to be done by a well known and well labeled company.

      I worked at a Best Buy home delivery . Aside from scratches and dents, the main reason people reject appliances is because they ordered the wrong size. People get carried away with features and appearance and don’t consider whether they’ll fit in their space. This is especially common when ordering online and there’s no salesperson to ask them how much space they have.

    No counters.
    No cabinets.
    Keep both sides of stove clear , allow at least 12 inches clearance each side for cleaning.
    no stone tops, no plastic laminate tops.
    stainless or commercial grade maple 2 1/2 inch thick.
    No silly consumer grade dishwasher, they're a complete joke, I don't care how much you paid.
    No digital readout on the stove, digital circuit boards in a hot stove will always fail.

    1. ALWAYS have your range hood exhaust to the OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE! Otherwise you're just blowing smoke around the inside of it, accomplishing NOTHING.
    2. Using any type of draw or cabinet door handles that stick out at the ends, will eventually snag your clothing and rip it, and you'll feel like a moron, or worse if it's someone else's clothes. Been there.

    We just had our's done two years ago. By the time it was started all of our parts were in the carriage house and waiting for installation, except the huge stove, which was delivered on the final day. We hired a design specialist to make the very best of our space. My wife and I picked everything, cabinets, countertop, lighting, backsplash, flooring and paint on our own to complement our 1914 craftsman home. Floor tile was purchased nearly 12 years ago and cannot be found today. Planning? We had been planning this kitchen for 18 years.
    Something CR neglected to mention, "stay away from trendy styles" because after 10 years you'll hate your kitchen and want to re do it all again. ( just like the green or avocado appliances, with the paint grade cabinets and blue countertops. )

    So who decided their island was too long after they got it built? I doubt that ever really happened. For most people, the bigger the better and 10 feet is more like a minimum than a maximum.

    • @PREPSTAR
      @PREPSTAR 10 лет назад +8

      Did you see that thing? You would have to walk a mile to get around to the sink from the other side!

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 9 лет назад +1

      Nick Overby Actually, you have to walk exactly five feet to get from the center of a ten foot island to get to either end. If your work triangle is entirely behind the island, and you serve meals to guests on stools sitting at the island you have to walk behind it once per meal. Seems like a small price to pay to have a generous workarea that can double as a serving area so you don't have to have a separate kitchen table. It's true that your island needs to be proportional to the space, but if your kitchen is at one end of a 20x30 foot great room you're going to want a generous island. A ten foot island will comfortably seat 4 people on stools in front of it, 5 people if you crowd them together a bit. People like fancier kitchens these days. If you've got plenty of space you can actually plan a work triangle at one end of a long island and leave the other end for somebody else to work mixing drinks at a wet bar or whatever.

    • @TheOpelkoenjas
      @TheOpelkoenjas 8 лет назад +1

      +dlwatib I know, this is a response on your comment after two years, but you would be surprised how many people have "an idea" on how they want something to look, but while the work is in progress find out that their ideas were a big screw up and want things changed. And sadly enough, many contractors know this beforehand the moment they see/hear the plans and won't say a word about it. Now a days many only think about their bank account, and how fast they can fill it up to be able to buy themselves that one million dollar home they always dreamed of. A good contractor should tell people beforehand that their ideas and "dreams" (i.e. their plans) might actually not really work out very well - for different reasons - and should propose something that matches their ideas/dreams, but more cost effective and closer to reality.

    Actually,all those super kitchens usualy in super houses ..thanks,but No ,thanks... been there ...big kitchen is more for show ,because literally you spend time near few cabinets and appliances ,microwave so high above ,it is out of reach for my 10 yrs old grandkids and short myself...Thanks God we down sized ,because big house = big and high maintenance. marble literally the worst material for kitchen and tubs ,as its need to be seal,easely stained...Lol, you know when you buy new or just finished new house ...1st things you find is stack of services - from maids to gardener or lawn specialist ,to maintance services.Project your kitchen for your need and life style and physical abilities ... perfect popular French door fridge - the upper shelve not really useful for 5'2'' me,and for that price sub zero or other drawers type ,actually cheaper. I would never say yes to white marble floor again ,they have to pay me to have it,or instant hot water.. electric teakettle much cheaper,never for trash cabinet , YES for walk in Pantry and yes for butler sideboards.Huge no, for chimney type air vent -unless you have a maid ,who would keep that sucker clean. Good kitchen -is a smart and affordable kitchen. Sorry for rant .

      Yep when I used to clean houses the trash can cabinet was always messy and very hard to clean. A better idea would be to have an open space between the cabinets with a door. Like a faux cabinet so that the trash can actually sits on the floor.

    The best way to do is how Saddlerock Investments LLC Rory Shannon Does it! LOL
    They use a Jose Mesa, right out of Mexico with no skills or education of any kind as he confirmed so, but cheap! " I learn on the job!" As he stated. In reference to my house that I bought from this investor, the kitchen granite counter is placed so high that it cuts through the kitchen window, so no open and close privileges, not only but they had to remove the window screen, since it no longer fits the window! What the irony of it is that the kitchen was absolutely perfect prior to Jose Mesa getting to it!

    Welp... there goes that. My fiancé’s family are our landlords & they put our stove/oven in the middle of our kitchen with no ventilation & or hood.... the so called kitchen island is immediately next to our couch. They swear that range hoods do not work & are eye sores.

    I found the best way to get the cost of any major renovation is to just double whatever the estimate is. I have had a lot of work done on houses over the years and there's always things that they run into that they don't expect. Also plans and designs get modifications and I tend to add extras as it progresses.

  • @hfdarchitects
    @hfdarchitects 13 лет назад +17

    CR got it all wrong! Instead of a hardware store they should have interviewed design professionals. Instead of saying what dimensions an island should be they should have asked a design professional. Instead of giving space planning do's and don'ts, they should have talked to design professionals. Instead of touting hoods they should have talked to design professionals. In short, CR should stick to appliance, car, etc. reviews and leave design advice to the professionals.

      Here's a tip. If someone thinks that they need a combination of the two following things:
      * a design professional
      * a loan to pay for the renovation
      They should hang up their phone, not call a "design professional" and save their money until they can pay for a kitchen.

    Change of mind is a right.. contractors are the problem.. get a craftsman that builds what you want ..

    • @thenite187
      @thenite187 9 лет назад +3

      Yes and no,,, the craftsman is for custom design. The contractor is for locating, putting to work and assuring completion of each trade involved. A "good" contractor should be able to provide you a list of "craftsmen" "Proficient" in their trade - that will be completing your project. You certainly do not want your plumber installing your electric. Don't get me wrong, there are some people out there who can do everything very very well (Hats off to those who can). The one thing you will notice is, even if they can pull it all off alone or with a helper, they are still going to finish slower than a person equipped and supplied with all the materials and knowledge of the particular trade in question - including licensing (electrician and plumber for example). The contractor's job is to establish an army of "reliable" and "talented" people to provide an excellent outcome in a timely manner.
      Remember,, there is no sure-fire way of going about picking a good contractor. Even recommendation can leave you quite disappointed.
      The trick in assuring a good product for yourself is establish an communication and keep it.
      1. Don't rush into having work done. Chances are you won't give yourself enough time to decide on something you can afford or you won't get the most for your investment
      2. Know your budget. Know how much you can spend without putting yourself deeper in debt and ending up getting less out of it after the finance institutions completely rip you off. Keep in mind, unless you invest in a renowned well-know "artist" to design and complete your project it will loose value the second you use it. In other words it will be worth less than you paid of it (for several reasons).
      3. Avoid hiring a contractor/craftsman just because they pull up in a shiny brand new truck or because they have a fancy ad on TV. Chances are you will be paying for all that glitter. You are looking for a practical individual that has a focus on what you want and what you can afford. The first sign of a person that offers a low-ball estimate and then hits you later is found in the presentation. Short answers, cutting you off in conversation, poor memory as well as quick changes of topic are pretty strong signs that you will end up paying a lot more that you agreed.
      I can go on and on.
      Watch out for a lot of fine print. When you see this, check things like the BBB or building associations in your area. Fine print quite simply states, If we make a mistake, we will do everything in our power to get out of fixing it. If there is something written,,, READ IT, understand it and DO NOT SIGN unless you are comfortable.
      If you are tired and just want to get it done. Don't do it. Put it down for a while and come back when you really have more patience.
      Hiring someone good takes two things,,, time and money and both are yours until you've given them up.
      One more thing to remember. Rome was not built in a day, but boy was it built beautifully and lasted a very long time. It takes time to acquire materials - especially in a kitchen (a lot of time 6 to 10 weeks for the cabinets alone). Make sure you have a good idea of what will be done when and if it is realistic. Allow for some shortfalls - at least 3 occur very commonly in the trades. You certainly do not want anyone rushing, but you should very rarely see a workday go by without some progress.
      If you need anything or would like some more answers,, seek me out.
      I hope everyone has a rewarding experience or at least can find a comfort in its process and long-lasting completion.

      I totally agree to this comment. My interior designer save me $$$$$ of money. It been 11 yrs since my kitchen remodel and there is NOTHING I would change. Still LOVE it. My 81 yr old dad had a stroke and had to move in with us during the remodel. ugh Yes it was tough but do able. He is 92 and still going strong here. I built my dream kitchen. Both kids just out of the house. We hardly ever eat out and I find it a pleasure to cook in my kitchen. I'm short and my designer took that into account too.

    If I had hired high end contractors and they didn't bother telling me something was wrong with the plan i.e. cabinets bumping, walkthrough spaces not wide enough, missing standard appliance, etc., I would charge the job back to them per detail they didn't bother to highlight my design error while laughing behind my back or thinking I would pay them the rest of the money when I could have done the job myself but PAID for "professional" advice that never happened.
    Caveat: Unless I chose to completely rework the space or a major part of it after the work was complete Or... I argued with their tips to do it differently.
    As for your own issues with design, if you're too ignorant to measure twice and cut once, then you deserve the hands on crap kitchen you get.
