  • The Baya Weaver (Ploceus philippinus) is a small, social bird known for its remarkable nest-building skills and striking breeding plumage. The male Baya Weaver is particularly eye-catching during the breeding season, with a bright yellow crown, dark brown face, and streaked brown and white underparts. Outside of breeding, both males and females have more subdued, brown plumage that blends well with their surroundings.
Native to South and Southeast Asia, the Baya Weaver inhabits open grasslands, farmlands, and wetlands, often near water. They are highly gregarious birds, typically found in large flocks, which add to their charm and make them a lively sight in the landscape.
What truly sets the Baya Weaver apart is its intricate nest, a pendulous structure woven from grass, leaves, and other plant fibers. These nests are often seen hanging from trees, especially near water. The males build the nests and then display them to attract females. The nests have a characteristic bottle shape with a long, tubular entrance, designed to protect the eggs and chicks from predators.
The Baya Weaver primarily feeds on seeds, grains, and insects, making it a common sight in agricultural areas. While not currently threatened, the species is dependent on open habitats, making it vulnerable to habitat loss due to agricultural intensification and urban development.
