The show had to end before the books, which plays a big part in why the end of the show wasn't good. There was way more money behind the show, so if the books got ahead and people didn't like it there was a huge amount of money to lose on the show. What if everyone liked the book ending and lost interest in the show? For the show ending to suck and then the book redeeming it also works well for GRRM.
George, by his own definition, is a Gardener type of writer. Just for contrast I am what he calls an Architect type. I have worked with Gardeners before and I know that they seldom plan ahead. So George revealing secrets of the future narrative would only hinder his creativity.
@@bollockjohnson6156 I have written a seven part series of (far more) Tolkienesque novels. The first will launch (via a traditional publisher) Dec/Jan. Book tour will happen next year. I am currently writing the first of thirty volume collection of tales, tied to the original series.
I think the "secret" is more of a yin-yang approach; write first for spontaneity, edit later for structure. Very few architects are able to match the brilliant and original ideas that spew forth from a gardener's unconscious mind, but many gardener's struggle with the issue of writing themselves into corners and having disappointing conclusions to their plots. The answer is seldom a or b but rather c: all of the above.
There's one thing from the show i've been saying for years now that in my opinion there's just no way this comes from GRR Martin, it's the whole "Hold The Door" thing. I simply don't Martin come with such a simplistic and overly sentimental explanation... This was one of the biggest point of no return in the show where i thought "okay, now we strained way too far from Martin's work, from now on i fear it will go downhill", and i was pretty much proven right...
@@codyadams3051 Then there is no way it happens like that. This is way too fantastical and out there for him. Just like i very much doubt there's a "Night King" or that Arya becomes come kind of ninja warrior for exemple. Actually now i think remember hearing something from Martin about the fact that Hold The Door is really a thing but how it happens will be vey, very different in the book.
@@vee1766 yeah there's an abundance of stuff in those latter seasons that seems like its a plot point that comes from the book but obviously D and D had none of the context for how those plot points should be handled and fumbled it completely. Like imagine if they started doing the show when clash was the newest book and for some reason George didn't get storm out and they had to figure out how to do a plot point like "the Freys kill Rob, his mother, and just about everyone else at Edmure's wedding". It would have come off just as badly. As for Arya I don't doubt she'll become a "ninja warrior" but there's still no evidence of a night king in the books so there's no doubt in my mind that she absolutely won't just phantom menace the others away.
@@codyadams3051 The problem is a lot of things that happen in latter seasons lack the foundations that lead to them because the show ommited important characters and events that were crucial. Biggest exemple being Daenerys becoming a mad tyrant, which imo is a rather obvious path in the books already but in the show came out of nowhere because we didn't get things like Quentyn Martell and the Dorne Plot, Aegon and Jon Connington, Strong belwas, the Tattered Prince, Victarion, important Dothraki devellopment...
I really like to hear him talk about the art of writing
They didn't realize there for FIVE books, including a lot more Greyjoy & Martell characters and a whole Dorne plotline....

@@GloriousRAT thank you for the reply, I'll look out for your books and tell my (tiny) circle of LOTR fans to keep an eye out as well. Good luck.

10K views but I was the only like, there's no way I hope my account was just lagging. Thank you for the share!
Thank you
Perhaps if a certain author finished his book series…..
Doran's plans are Martin's secrets.
Can we all just step back and try to comprehend the astounding imagination of GRRM.
He's got more money than he can count, he's stopped caring a long time ago.
this title- isnt a 2 minute video-
the title suggests a freaking podcast series.
@mako4874 it's just a glimpse from an interview of George RR Martin.
My eyes are dark green. What colour are your eyes?

im pretty sure the hold the door thing comes from him, even though the show might not have portrayed it in exactly the same way as the books will
Hold the door is one of the things he's confirmed is going to happen in the books along with Stannis burning his daughter and Bran becoming king.
