やばい is such a good emotional expression term with a range from surprise, shock, happiness, danger (saying something bad or naughty). The Japanese language is very good at hiding exact meaning. Although it trips me up all the time as I attempt to follow the banter of all those Japanese vtubers. Probably that infamous “reading the atmosphere”.
It's so funny to me because phonetically it sounds exactly how people in Cork, Ireland would say "Yeah boy!"
So やばい is like the F word, that it can be use in a lot of situation.

It almost has a similar feeling to “sick” or “wicked” in English - formally, it has a definite negative meaning, but as slang it’s much more fluid and in a way just expresses having some strong emotional reaction to something.
In Chinese 他妈 means his mom. But if u add 的, 他妈的, it means motherf*c*er 🤣. Every language is so unique.

I think she got used to it very quickly since her previous role is Kirigaya Tōko from BanG Dream!, a character that is also a gyaru and speaks like that. If you watch Tōko speak and then Marin you'll almost think it's the same person.

I sense that in Japanese, using "yabai" and "maji" frequently when you talk is like an American using "like," "uh" and "really" - is gyaru comparable to "valley girl" in this manner?
In English dubs, ギャル type characters are often given 'valley girl' accents as a decent enough approximation of how ギャル girls sound to your average Japanese. The same way that characters from Osaka are often given southern accents in an attempt to translate the impression that your average Tokyo resident would have of Osaka ben.
Not really, "like" and "uh" at filler words used while you're thinking of the next word you're going to say. The Japanese equivalent would be "ano", "eto", or "nanka".

God, I love linguistic quirks like this. As an American, the evolution of American accents and speech patterns has always fascinated me, and learning these kinds of patterns in other languages as I learn them is really neat as well.

Yuta could you do the same thing for Gyuutaro from Kimetsu no Yaiba? He had a very special way of talking in the manga, and i think it got lost in translation in the subs 💚💚💚

I cannot appreciate Yuta-san enough, first he recommended Takagi-san to me which is now my favourite anime, then he mentions Yuru Camp in a video about Marin, and I currently watch Yuru Camp (and my Dress up Darling, obviously).
The way Kitagawa-san and her friends greeted Gojou-kun (おはあ instead of おはよう) is it also a gyaru thing? And she once referred to herself with 俺 'ore', if I'm not mistaken, that was pretty strange as well
the "gendered" pronouns doesnt really have definitive rules like you can use feminine pronouns while you are men and masculine pronouns while you are a women. it may sound awkward but it doesnt really matter honestly.

Funnily enough, this was just brought up in the manga. What pronouns Marin and other cosplayers use online vs in person.

I lost it at the "implying" thing, I remember learning one of the different between native and people who learn Japanese is when asking, native would use sentence that IMPLY they want to do something instead of asking question and expect the other person to get that the intention is asking not making statement/opinion

I always wondered, if we compare the speed with which people speak Japanese and we consider the one from anime to be average, then some entertainment programs talk so fast that I don't know if it is possible to understand them, but when you listen to passers-by in some interviews, they always talk so slowly.

I'm watching Alexi's NoriYaro and its a good point. Just look when he asks someone and they explains things in japanese- its sounds so slow and sounds like they said just 4-5 words in sentence. Like they have to think about every next word that will come out from their mouth. Usualy theres much "...ooo" and "anoooo..." Totaly oposite to 4:38

No. Yabai usually means that something bad is happening. Poggers, i've never heard it used negatively.

It's more like "no way!" or "gross!" etc when somebody is telling you about something weird, crazy, disgusting that happened in a situation.
@@laserbean00001 as yuta said, it's contextual - I can't say anything about poggers in everyday speech but it's not always negative, especially in casual animes like this

I haven't watched any seasonal anime since ages, but I really enjoy this. My all knowing nose smelled that it would be a good one and the smell wasn't deceiving.

I watched this last weekend and really liked Marin, I felt like her speech is very easy to understand. Yuta, can you share if this kind of "gyaru" speak is annoying to native Japanese speakers or should be avoided if you aren't a teen girl like Marin? I am a Japanese learner and worked in a Japanese office with all male colleagues for a long time, and to avoid picking up masculine expressions, I like to find inspiration for more femme speech patterns... I want to know if Marin is a good or bad example to not rub people the wrong way. Thank you!
Same!!! Gyaru speech pattern is really easy to understand & sounds friendly to me but I often wonder if it might be rude to speak to natives this way!
If they're your friends it's probably fine but it can be def weird if you aren't a teen/young adult and use it too much
It would be a bad example in a formal setting; her speech is very informal and Japan has fairly strict norms of conduct when it comes to formality (eg use of honorifics to address elders or those in a higher position, as well as speaking in a formal way)
I don't recommend using the gal's words to anyone. Many Japanese empirically understand situations where it is okay to speak it, but it is difficult for an unfamiliar foreigner to understand.

I think a fair comparison to gyaru speech patterns in American English would probably be Valley Girl. Valleyspeak or Valspeak comes from California, but you can hear it a lot in Florida and tourism areas in any coastal state, too.
I'm wish there is a video about Gyaru in Japanese culture :)

the voice actress for dub did a great job of expressing this character and how she would talk if she's American
I love the sometimes hilarious subtitles that are used for her mannerisms and whatnot. I find them pretty fitting, because it suits the gyaru nature perfectly. Hahaha

One thing I do notice apart from her gal’s linguistic, Marin’s seiyuu actually voiced her in a very normal daily life japanese girl manner which can be often heard on Japanese drama, very refreshing among some of the newer seiyuu
