Hey Scott the Harpoon needs to have the string attached to it for it to work correctly. Its because like the fletching on a arrow the string adds drag so the harpoon doesn't nose dive & hit it semi broadside. You'll have better results from farther away. Just FYI. Love the content best part of me day!
The water and string help keep the bolt from spinn8ng out of control I've shot spear fishing from pretty good distances and they travel pretty straight in water very rarely do they spin only a couple of times the prongs on the front opened and made it shoot to the side a bit . Great show really good seeing you reduce the aquatic population
The harpoons will fly straighter with the rope attached to it as it will act like a stabilising tail. If you tie a short length of rope to it, it will fly a lot better
How is a rope going to change the direction of a harpoon? It doesn't have an engine. If anything changes its course, the harpoon loses the energy it had.
@MrYfrank14 the rope will act as a stabiliser and keep the harpoon going straight as it will counteract the nose heavy nature of it. It won't make it fly further, but it will stop it twisting in flight so the harpoon should impact on the barbed end rather than sideways
I was honestly surprised how powerful that thing is. I would have thought it'd need a larger blank to send off a one pound projectile, especially under water. Way neat little piece of history you got there!
Is this meant to be used underwater? I believe with all that line and such it's meant to be used from a small fishing boat or a whalers boat because I don't see any features that would keep that powder from getting snuffed out instantly when it fires underwater
It's keyholing at distance because you're not using the string. Where normal arrows have feathers or vanes to stabilize the arrow, harpoons like this, or the ones I use for bowfishing, are stabilized by the backwards tension of the line as they feed outwards towards the target. It'd probably send a harpoon at least 25 yards easily if it's stabilized.
@Iowa_lot_to_travel they show up on Brandon Herrera's Darwin Award videos for a reason. I never imagined it would throw something that weighed a pound 100 yards though.
The Navy and Coast Guard used to use shoulder fired line throwing guns made from Springfield 30-03s. Bore out the rifling, cut back the forward end of the stock, install a canister to hold the shot line, turn down the forward 18 inches or so of the barrel to a uniform outside diameter, remove front sight, and add a butt pad with some cushioning. I think the heaviest projectile for it was 18 ounces. I recall one situation where the gunners mate fired that 18 ounce projectile three time before one reached the beach.
Firing the harpoon gun at long distances the line helps keep the harpoon stable from tension being placed on the line. I know this because I lived up in Maine in my younger years and during the summer worked on fishing boats when school was out for the summer ,and used a harpoon gun sometimes similar to the one you have but it used 308 blanks.
Fun fact, in southern Italy we still use harpoons to hunt tuna and swordfish: with special boats equipped with an extremely long plank protruding from the front, from which the fisherman can see and strike the fish
@@mattthekiller9129 similar to harpoon fishing, except instead of using a rifle you use an archery bow to shoot the fishing arrows (with harpoon style tips) at your target, And there is usually a fishing reel attached to the bow. We have even developed specialized boats for night fishing using archery equipment. We don't hunt things as big as tuna this way though. Although the bigger species of catfish that are bowfished can reach over 600 pounds (272 kilo), Gar over 300 pounds (136 kilo), and Carp over 110 pounds (50 kilo).
Great job, those Martini rifles are some of the most versified rifles made. Seeing you're on the salt water side, look up "Signal Cannons", they were a brass cannon that would shoot a line out to aid boater/sailors in need where using a boat would take too long. (short version) I had made some 209 primer holders for a cannon at the Sussex County Life Saving Station in Delaware, but never got to see it work.
I think it's called a Lyle Gun. I had one for several years. The bore size fit a tennis ball, made for the US Coast Guard and was turned on a lath. At the mussel the thickness about 1.25" and at the other end about 2.25'. It didn't have a breach, one loaded black powder from the mussel. Being about 2.5 feet long it was made of two pieces, the steal barrel and the cast iron base. Total weight ~ 300lbs. The angle could be set at one of three angles and could be separated for transport. The pivoting point wasn't in the middle but at the rear of the barrel. Setting the tension of the bearings would allow just the right resistance to adjust the angle. I wish I sill had it. It had a placard of brass with all the U.S. Coast Guard serial number and other info on it. The whole thing was painted Coast Guard gray. First made to throw a line between ships at sea but was replaced with a shotgun looking line thrower & choppers. Most of them ended up as rescue line throwers shot from shore to a ship run aground. One was used at the mouth of the Columbia River, the boarder of Oregon and Washington States. Ships often ran aground on the bar. I found mine at an antique shop and sold it 5 years later to another antique shop. I paid $300 for it, cleaned it up like new then shot it till my divorce. Sold it for $300. It worked real well as a signal gun and that is what it was used for when the shop sold it. I was probably the last one to put a solid lead cannon ball in it. That's a scary story for another day. Great memories... :)
I wonder if the chamber would fit a .357 magnum blank. Or if not how much powder you could put in a .38 special case before blowing the gun up. It seems like it would be more forgiving of overpressure than a regular gun with bullet in the case. I mean you're only dealing with gas and no bullet stuck in the case to push out through a barrel and that harpoon is getting blasted off before anything breaks.

Props on having the, uh, fortitude to risk breaking an original bolt! Awesome video, way cooler than some .50cal imo!! I bet it might've flown straighter if rope was attached. Some big whaling harpoons actually have explosive tips;)
If I didn't know any better, I'd say that's the actual rifle itself from the movie. Even the box it comes in is identical. Given how powerful it is, no wonder why Bruce was pissed off. Quint had himself a really great harpoon rifle.
It’d be amazing to see Scott recreating some of the iconic scenes in the 1975 Film “JAWS” with the Tactical T-Rex taking on the role as “Bruce” but the three barrels not being sufficient to bring the 3-ton beast up in the ocean was a nice reference to Quint’s quote.
Scott, you have influenced my dad way too much My dad won't stop mentioning watermelon time and how nobody likes eggplant But upon telling him about my idea for building a semi-auto tube-fed rifle chambered for .357 and .44 Magnum, he suggested it be scaled all the way up to .500 Nitro Expres... And I like that idea
Question: we saw how a over pressured 45-70 does in a leaver gun with a modern barrel, but what would happen with an Octagonal barrel? Keep up the great work Scott, looking forward to you getting a new round named after you someday.
The grand ol' harpoon blaster surprised me plenty. For using a .38 Special blank, it shoots that heavy harpoon quite hard! As always, you took a regular range session and made it oh-so-funny! 😀👏

I have always been a big JAWS fan !! When it come out 1975 I was 12 years old went and seen it every Saturday for 8 weeks with my allowance. I have always wondered how a Greener Harpoon gun looked like really firing! Thanks really enjoyed!!
Imagine it, but with .500 magnum blanks….
YEET
That slow motion harpoon looks insane. Very good content as always
Cmon Hooper tie it on!! Don’t wait for me!!
Cool! We built some ammo for an original "kongsberg line thrower", harpoon gun made from a mouser. Guy said there was only a handful of originals, it used a something x44r blank. Can't remember exactly its been years, but that's cool to see you using a similar one!
I've been watching Scott for a few years now I think it would be fantastic to spend the day on his range
Okay Scott. That is almost Hot air balloon content. You are my official RUclips favorite now. Also "Jaws" harpoon gun is awesome. Just when I thought you couldn't come up with anything to top s×s elephant rifles you pull this out of nowhere. Excellent job. Thanks Scott and Scott.
the rope might actually add a "arrow flight" like effect, adding drag to the back might actually help it fly straighter.
Scott, you have the best and most entertaining and educational firearm channel on the internet. Keep it up man
Scott just when I thought you couldn't get any dumber, you go and do something like this. And totally redeem yourself! I'm kidding, every video you put out is awesome, entertaining and informative. Thanks for all your hard work and keep em coming!
I wanted a harpoon gun like Quint had since the first time I saw that movie as a kid. I didn't even know it really existed. Cool video as always.
The turkey shot was awesome for showing the expanding broadhead. Good show.
🦈🦈🦈🦈
Seriously tho, Clear Ballistics definitely needs a YT channel for how they make their products!
the fact that this could've been any gun but it happens to be a martini henry makes it 100x cooler
I love this channel hands down the best out there. His humor kills me.
It looks like something I would use on something bigger than jaws something like the crocodiles from lake placid seems fitting
I'd say these are a solid 10/10 for zombies or aliens.
Or could you possibly test that scene from fast and furious where they shot a harpoon thru a windshield and would it still have enough to securely lodge itself into the seat back?
Imagine this but with .500 magnum blanks….
YEET
@@crazysilly2914 pretty sure we'd have another Serbu incident on our hands
@@julian75411 it would have to be a bigger gun, of course...
@@crazysilly2914 "if it seats...it yeets"
Could not stop laughing when the shark came flying in with the dolphin vocalizations. Very cool piece.
Lol 😆 The sound effects had me laughing waaay too hard on this one 🤣 Nice video as usual Scott 😎👍
someone needs to start producing something like this again! I speer fished all my life and would love a blank powered vs rubber gun, now at my oldish age...
As always , awesome content. Never feel I’ve wasted time watching Scott “demonstrate” cool stuff. Only time I cry is when you waste my Nacho cheese 🧀. Thanks for a great video.
I'm so glad you were able to put together a video of this thing in action. Ever since seeing Ian reviewed this on FW, I've always wanted to see it actually fire.
Sharks don't make dolphin sounds. I think you found the one mutant. The fact that the second Nessy shot hit RIGHT where you taped the old girl was impressive.
It was a dolphin that self identifies as a shark.
The dolphin sound making is a hidden skill tree for sharks to be able to trick dolphins into ambushes.
to think there is at least one man in this universe across every extraterrestrial civilization, abroad every possible reality who wishes Scott died from the .50 incident is truly stunning
Props on having the, uh, fortitude to risk breaking an original bolt! Awesome video, way cooler than some .50cal imo!! I bet it might've flown straighter if rope was attached. Some big whaling harpoons actually have explosive tips;)
For real?
If I didn't know any better, I'd say that's the actual rifle itself from the movie. Even the box it comes in is identical. Given how powerful it is, no wonder why Bruce was pissed off. Quint had himself a really great harpoon rifle.
"We need a bigger folding table..."
Probably someone already said it🤣 but i'm happy to enjoy again Scott work, there is so much to recap🤓
Can you imagine what anybody passing by must think seeing Scott with all the random things he gets up to, 🤔🤣
the rope keeps the pointed end going the right direction. a classic and congrats
Scott, you have influenced my dad way too much
My dad won't stop mentioning watermelon time and how nobody likes eggplant
But upon telling him about my idea for building a semi-auto tube-fed rifle chambered for .357 and .44 Magnum, he suggested it be scaled all the way up to .500 Nitro Expres...
And I like that idea
I like how he thinks 🤙
I liked it! A ballistic human replica would be cool! I also want to know how much powder is behind it
So happy you done the distance shot. It’s all I was thinking about
We’re gonna need a bigger table!🦈
LOL
Question: we saw how a over pressured 45-70 does in a leaver gun with a modern barrel, but what would happen with an Octagonal barrel?
Keep up the great work Scott, looking forward to you getting a new round named after you someday.
The grand ol' harpoon blaster surprised me plenty. For using a .38 Special blank, it shoots that heavy harpoon quite hard! As always, you took a regular range session and made it oh-so-funny! 😀👏
Ah yes the greener markI/II light harpoon rifle. One of the favorites in my collection, took me 20+ years to find one
Do you have a mk1 or mk2?
I found kentucky, garand, and demoranch yesterday and have been awake the entire time since ive found them, they are awsome and really entertaining
Scott's wife must love it when it is dinner time, because they can't eat until Scott flips the dinner table in the air and makes it land on all fours on the floor, lol.
My favorite comment so far lol
Scott’s got lifeless eyes….like a doll’s eyes. I remember seeing one of these for sale years ago in the Navy Arms showroom in Ridgefield, N.J. I believe they were the importers.
It’s so satisfying with the first shot on the slow Mo cam
The opening was great with the table flips because i just bought those same tables and was worried they were cheaply made. Now I can confirm they are not.
6:03 thanks for the laugh, I couldn’t stop rewinding😂
Kids loved it, thanks for the fun videos.
Scott, you’ve always got something wild to share. Thanks for all the laughs.
I loved this video the arrow flew very Beautifully
thats probably the coolest harpoon gun ive seen
when you have the rope attached it helps keep the harpoon more steady flying through the air 🎉
