Pool Spa draining when pump is off - Fixed

Is your pool spa draining into your pool when pump is off ?
There could be few things...
1, The reason could be your settings if you have an automated system.
2. It could also be one or both of the actuator valves going bad. You can check them with toggle switches. if not working just replace the top electronic motor. No need to replace the entire valve.
Also check to make sure the valve gaskets are in good shape.
3. it could be a bad backflow/ Check valve. you can replace the internal flapper with new seal.

Many thanks for the video. Very helpful to diagnose the entire system and troubleshoot. To the new pool/spa owner the pipes, pumps, check valve, actuators, can be terribly confusing.

Please add a check valve between your heater and a chlorinator. It should prevent chlorine concentrated water to backflow into your heater and extend its life.

Good tip but I don’t use my chlorinator. I put tablets in pool directly.

I still have major leak down. I tried dye and didn’t see any leaks around the light. It seems it is the returns but even when I close the spa return valve and I replaced the check valve with a whole new assembly it still leaks.

Thank you, I have the same problem. I am confused by your 2 spa jet returns? I have the top return like you. From the water heater, into Chlorine tablet and into a 3 way valve for the return to either pool and spa jets. The spa side has a check valve. I am confused why in spa mode though run the lower side to spa and it has no check valve? Does it drain? For me to run spill over. I use your top side design and close the spa drain and run the 3 way valve about 60/40 to the spa side so both pool and spa jets have some flow.

I have the same system. Mine the other day just stopped letting me have the option to choose spillover and since then, every time pool mode is off, the spa drains. Any idea why?

I never use spillover option. My pool option runs the spillover along with it

I have the same basic set up that you have. When the pool turns on the spa spillover comes on automatically and works fine. But then when the automatic system turns off, it doesn’t return the belt back to Pool and a spa drains. How do you program the controller to turn that valve back to Pool? Thanks, John.

All controller programming is different so it’s hard to tell you without being there. Ask a pool professional

Mine will drain (if in spa mode) both when the pump is running and when it is off and I cannot find backflow/check valve. Any suggestions?

If it’s draining during pump run then it means your spa drain is on and jets are off. During normal operation your spa jets should be on and spa drain should be either off of very slow on drain.
