    Hi there! My husband and I are part of the Friends of Benham group leading the revitalization efforts in Benham. When you come back through again we would love to show you more of our town. The inside of the theater is a must see! Also, we recently secured a grant to repaint the little fire station you love. Lots of great things happening in Benham! Thx for visiting!

    I worked for Interntional Trucks years ago. Harvester had their hands in a lot of jars back then. When they Bought a Foundry to process their own Steel for production, they ventured into the Coal mining business to feed their furnaces. If you look closer into the Area you may find that Henry Ford (Ford Motor Co.) had a Coal operation Just like International Harvester over in the next county in another Valley in the mountains. They were Both absolute Giants and Global.

    This old coal town actually looks to be in pretty good shape compared to other old coal towns. I wished that my paternal grandfather was still alive, I wonder if he knew about this place. He had retired from being an assistant plant manager of a "Harvester" plant in Springfield, Ohio. I come from SW Ohio but now live in Florida. I just came back from spending a few months back home to enjoy the end of summer and the fall up there. I do love to drive the backroads of Ohio and into Northern Kentucky. Your trips remind me of taking those drives. I don't get into the areas you travel as much as I would like, but thanks to you, I can live vicariously. You are providing me with some places I need to go see myself and giving me the gumption that I need to plan to do so. I find that as pretty as Florida is, I really miss the woodlands, hills/mountains, hollers, of the part of the country I come from. So glad RUclips lead me to your videos. Great intro music! I love seeing they still have that old IH fire truck even though it probably went out of service years ago.

    I was born on School House Hill in Benham in 1943. One of my sisters and my brother were also born there. I recently contacted City Hall regarding putting bricks on the Coal Miners Wall for my father and grandfather, but it seems there was considerable damage from a storm and they are applying for a grant to refurbish the wall. My family moved north to Detroit looking for work in 1949 , so I did leave Harlan alive. My uncle worked in the mines there for 42 years. Many hardworking God loving people came from there. I am proud to be a coal miner’s daughter. My maiden name was Winstead.

    Thank you so much for sharing. My grandmother grew up in Benham, her father was coal miner that tragically died due to a cave in when she was 8mo old. On her parents marriage certificate it stated they were married at the Methodist Church, I'm guessing it was the church next to the school in your video. I would love to see more of the area. I know they lived in what the census records called "Poor Folk", and see what the company homes looked like in the 30s and 40s.

    International Harvestor made refrigerators many years ago also. Great trip to another forgotten coal town. The people that lived there used to be so important. They provided energy for the nation. Now long forgotten. I know poverty is heavy in these areas. But I wonder if they prefer life in obscurity to all of the former hustle and bustle.

    • @mpgarr
      @mpgarr 3 года назад

      Sure the poverty is high in this part of the country, but if you are from a place like this, no matter what, such a place is HOME. It is a beautiful area, so I can understand why not everyone wants to leave the place they grew up and for good and bad, dearly love.

    • @jazzcatt
      @jazzcatt 3 года назад +1

      The sad truth of the matter is that there is no such thing as 'clean energy'. It's only marketed as such. You can look it up. Believe me, I was very disheartened to learn how 'dirty' 'clean' energy is.
      Even if wind and solar were honestly 'clean' Kentucky wouldn't be a very good place for it. There isn't enough steady wind to put turbines up and there aren't enough bright, sunny days to warrant setting up solar farms.

      @@jazzcatt You would have to allocate large amounts of privately owned and public land as well as cutdown thousands of trees and brush. In other words, you would destroy habitats; both human and animal in order to build such structures. The cost is an environmental nightmare and a financial disaster.

      What is possible is that the turbines or whatever is used needs to be built and maintained. This provides work. And I fully agree they are the backbone of America and deserve much more respect then they ever received.
