    What I love about sewists is that they find out about some sort of event and immediately think
    I have just the right fabric (and dive into making a dress)

    Try using iron on interfacing on the zipper seams. Measure two strips of interfacing 1 1/4 inches wide and just longer than your zipper. Iron it on along both edges of the centre back seam. Then fold in half length ways and press again. This gives you a 5/8 inch guide for your zip and is quite obvious. Your zipper will go in nice and smoothly and not end up bobbling or uneven at the neck line. I always serge the centre back seams after adding the interfacing and before sewing on the zip.

    Thanks for sharing this video! Much appreciated. Its fun to see how others do things when their style is different from mine. That your dress wouldn't be found in the shops is a compliment. 😀 Its a huge rush when the garment is done and to do some show off. In that I envy you as everybody in this town of 50,000 sews quilts. In fact that describes most of Washington State.
    I gave up on try to do things in the time frame set by the patterns. First I mark the pieces after cutting and it turns out to be a monument to anal retentive behavior. Secondly I add in a few haute sewing techniques and usually line my dresses. Thirdly I'm poor and don't watch much TV, so sewing is a large part of my entertainment. Lastly I like avant garde from the 70-90s era and try to incorporate some of that into the final garment.
    Most all of my clothes are black and comprised of period, vintage and contemporary pieces. Most can be dressed up or down and fit into office professional, businesses casual or Goth/Punk. I'm A geeky Goth in my fifties. It helps with the very small capsule wardrobe of 4-6 each of skirts, dresses, trousers, blouses, sweaters and tops. Sewing gives me full control over quality and I save up for the best fabric I can buy. My clothes are far higher quality than expensive ready to wear. Most of my clothes are 7-11 years old and in good shape.
    Year after next I will be able to work again as I'm starting to walk again after years of severe health issues.

    • @SewSewLounge
      @SewSewLounge  2 месяца назад +2

      Thank you for watching! I love that your style is goth/punk- totally Gen X (which I am too, just a little younger). I’m happy to know that you love sewing as a source of entertainment AND because you value quality! Clothes these days are so overpriced and poorly made. I haven’t been shopping in years because everything I go clothes shopping I think, I can make this better and in a fabric no one else has. I’m sure you agree 😉

    • @SewSewLounge
      @SewSewLounge  5 месяцев назад +16

      I made a lot of mistakes. Thankfully none of them were so bad as to ruin my dress. Even after years of sewing I’m not perfect. I used to put in an invisible zipper with zero problems but I haven’t sewn one in a year. Those skills get rusty when you don’t use them!
      Unfortunately no one commented. But my boyfriend said a lot of people were looking at me while I looked at paintings.

    The first time I made a facing, i did understitching and I thought it was "magical". I understitch where ever I can use it. Necklines, armhole facings for sleeveless garments, and even waistline facings. I love the fabric you used and the pattern was a great choice to show it off.

    I'm going to say this as delicately as I can. If it only took 2 hours to sew a dress, I'd be elated, happy, and beyond thrilled.
    But sadly, I consider pattern preparation, any alterations I need to make, cutting the fabric, change the thread in my machine, and begin sewing. More like 8 hours maybe even more. Reality.😊

    • @SewSewLounge
      @SewSewLounge  5 месяцев назад

      This started with a knit dress last spring that said “2 hours to sew” on the pattern, which didn’t include pattern prep and cutting. And since it was a basic dress I sewed it in just over two hours. The time limit on this dress was arbitrary and it took 4 hours of sewing, including ripping out and resewing because it was more complicated. I generally don’t count pattern prep and cutting as sewing time-that’s all prep work.

      @SewSewLounge  5 месяцев назад +2

      I’m don’t see fast either. I try to be as efficient as possible, but I kept making mistakes because I was tired. I should know better than to sew when I didn’t sleep well the night before. Your sewing schedule sounds like a good one. I’d try that but it’s too hot in my sewing room to sew winter fabrics during the summer!

  • @phoenixrising5338
    @phoenixrising5338 5 месяцев назад +4

    Love the fabric. I've been sewing for 50 years, and I've never seen any pattern you could truly make in a couple of hours. It takes several hours just to prepare the fabric and lay and cut the fabric. Every time I see commercial patterns with big type screaming, "Two-hour dress!" I just snort. It certainly contributes, though, to people thinking I can whip up a couture, custom-fitted gown for them in a day at less than they'd pay off the rack. Which drives me insane and makes me uncivil.

    • @SewSewLounge
      @SewSewLounge  5 месяцев назад +1

      I don’t think the reality tv sewing shows help either! When I watch Making The Cut I start thinking I can make a capsule collection in two days 🤣
      I made a knit dress back in the spring that was labeled “2 hour” and I did it in just over two hours. I probably could have hit the 2 hour mark, if I’d skipped interfacing the neckline (which wasn’t part of the pattern instructions) but then it wouldn’t have looked as good.

  • @nancyloomis3046

    You did a beautiful job on the dress and it was perfect for the exhibit!
    I realized back when I used to sew more, a long time ago….that one of the biggest differences between being able to identify home-sewn garments and commercially made garments is in the pressing of the seams and overall draping of the piece. A well-made garment, whether made by YOU as opposed to commercially-made, will be hard to tell apart if the seams are pressed properly, along with any top stitching or other decorative features. Now, when you take a look inside, you can almost always tell the difference between.

    Try bra strap holders. Little straps sewn into the shoulder seam that snap around the bra strap. It is incredibly easy to make and then you never have to worry about shifting. You can alternatively by plastic ones that pin in like safety pins and hook onto the strap, but with a pretty dress like this, I would sew them. Just a thought. The fabric print is beautiful on you, btw!

    • @SewSewLounge

    The dress is so pretty. And you looked great with the backdrop of the Matisse paintings! What a great idea. As to how long things take to put together,, I always find that it takes me waaaaay more time than I figure. I attribute that to being exacting about the construction. So you're doing pretty great, it seems to me. Glad you had a good time.

But I don’t make many complicated things these days, but I’m still certainly good with darts and they’re pretty easy👍Thanks!

    ohh one more thing (since i am seeing your video 4 months after). instead of removing the back zipper, i would just add 2 very nice 8-10" length convex darts - closer fit - on each side of the zipper. this would taper to your waist and much easier and faster. AND should give it that great look for the waist.

    You're brave to cut into Tana lawn without making a muslin first! Of course I usually don't make a muslin because I am sooo impatient! Right now I have a pattern laid out on Tana lawn--it's a simple trapeze dress available free from the fabric store online, which specializes in linen.
    Personally I hate facings and will either do a bias finish on the neckline or if I have a bodice/skirt dress pattern I will make a lining using the burrito method. Are you familiar with that? It made a huge difference in my sewing. There are videos on it. My facings almost always look bad and never lie flat. I have issues with darts as well because I don't have much bust-wise. The vertical double-ponted darts work better for me.
    I love how your dress turned out and it is perfect for the event! I buy Liberty through their website since I don't go to London much! They have sales and usually free, fast shipping to the USA.
    Do you have a link for the clear ruler you used to draw the lines?

    • @SewSewLounge
      @SewSewLounge  5 месяцев назад

      I rarely make muslins first for the same reason! 😂 I was nervous to cut the Tana lawn, but it turn out fine. I’m looking forward to using the other pieces I bought soon. The weight is perfect for Texas summers.
      I have not heard of the burrito method for facings, only pillow case making. I will have to check it out I’m always looking for a good way to finish something.
      I’ve used free patterns from the fabric store too. I made a great tank and I have a boxy blouse pattern ready to go. I’ll have to get the trapeze dress too.
      The ruler I use is a Dritz see-thru ruler. It has a variety of markings for different seam allowances and such.
      Thank you for your thoughtful comment ☺️

      The Mona trapeze dress turned out great! I love it! The only thing I would suggest, if you try it, is to possibly make it longer. I am 5'5" (I think you said you are too?) and it was maybe a teensy bit shorter than I would have liked. If you use Adobe acrobat to open the pdf you can choose the size you want using the layers menu. It made a huge difference for me because it can be so hard to see the size you want among all the lines. @@SewSewLounge

      The pattern cutting was pretty quick since I used a rotary cutter, plus there are only 5 pattern pieces. Cutting out the fabric took about an hour since it’s a directional print and I wanted to make sure it looked good. And I had to get it all on grain and then cut each sleeve individually to get the print in the right direction. I’d say about an hour and 30 minutes more or less once I cut the interfacing and attached it to the facings.
