Wow, well the liberal and open Portuguese people do talk about this, I am indian immigrant in portugal, and I didnt knew how horrifying the actual crime was.... Hindus have suffered the same in Present day Pakistan and Bangladesh on the hands of Islamists... and I feel the pain of Jewish people. But I hope present day Portuguese are not blamed for the actions in Past.

A heartbreaking and a tragic story of the genocide of Jewish people in Lisbon. Sadly, one of many in the history of atrocities against Jewish people.

Many know this story because of the biggest earthquake and tsunami that the city of Lisbon ever survived... Around 🕒 years after... A flock tale is told that because of this crime, tge city of Lisbon payed their price... The story is known by Portuguese... Unfortunately today we see the far right growing and a vield anti Semitism... Lisbon needs a museum like never before to count the stories so many of resilience and preserverance ... There are so many stories yet to be told... Please visit Cascais and on a bench tree polish Jewish friends, looking at the gardens of the casino of cascais... Their story and of so many other... I wonder even if it is safe to speak or write
    ....

If you want to get more of a feeling how this was back then, for the Jewish people, read Richard Zimler's "The last kabbalist of Lisbon".

As Monty Python would say: Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition... But this wasn't in Spain. It was in Portugal. By the way: I appear in this movie! ;)

@@Ponnybit Unfortunately, no. I only appear for a few seconds in the church scene. I'm a mere extra! My son also appears as an extra in 3 or 4 scenes. In one of them, as a Jew. In the rest, as a believer, and as a murderer of Jews!😐But it wasa cool experience, and it's a great documentary movie. Very well filmed and produced!

And it was a terrible and shamefull event for the Portuguese. I have some Jewish blood (an grand grand father) and i'm 100% pro Israel. Great country and great people.

My understanding is that if Jews were spared the Plague -- but only to a degree -- it was because they had cats, who kept the mice at bay in their homes.

I descend from Portuguese Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism. I wonder if any of them were in Lisbon around this time. I hope not.😭 This was so hard to watch, especially knowing that my ancestors were persecuted violently for being jewish for a long time.
