Eh, Sakurai didn't actually say that, the good boys and girls quote was purely on the translators part. What Sakurai ACTUALLY said was that fighting the Japanese Ratings Board over whether to have Mai's heaving titties as is and uncensored while keeping Ultimate's rating the same wasn't worth it for a mere cameo, so he didn't show her at all. That's me paraphrasing a bit, of course. Sakurai said it more classily. Pyra and Mythra however are actual fighters, so working on their design to make them a bit more presentable was more than worth it.

as immediately as the trailer said "One day, Pyra just disappeared" I was immediately thinking "yeah she disappeared to go into Smash". And then we saw Rex find her on Final Destination stage.
