Left Handed Violin Playing, Part 1, by Ryan Thomson "You have a choice!"

  • Ryan's site - www.captainfidd... No such thing as a left handed violin? In Part 1 Ryan Thomson demonstrates left and right handed violins, and the differences between them. Ryan Thomson has learned to play violin at a professional level both left and right handed and can discuss the issue of playing either way from personal experience. In the Part 2 video he debunks the myth that left handed players have an advantage when they play violin right handed. He has written the world's first book about people who play violin left handed. The title is "Playing Violin and Fiddle Left Handed," and is available to order through his web site. The book contains a chapter on obtaining new left handed violins, converting right handed violins to lefty, and other options for playing. He writes about a virtuoso classical violinist who played left handed for a major symphony in the USA and several professional touring classical string quartets that had left handed playing violinists. Many non-classical fiddle players are listed also who perform jazz, celtic, and country music while playing left handed. Ryan has searched scientific sources for information to counter the myths and second hand anecdotes that promote the tired old mantra that left handed individuals must just give in and learn to play violin right handed. To access his second video, search "left handed violin playing part 2"

    Are there any violin teachers out there who don't mind teaching left handed people? I did a bit of research a few years ago and found a website that purported to answer that question. It did. I gave up. I'm left handed.
    I don't want to play in an orchestra where everybody plays right handed, I just want to play a tune. I just want to play.

      +kitty lynch I don't think most teachers would have problem with that, I am myself left handed and my teacher actually thought it mostly interesting to teach me to play because he had only taught left handers who played right handed ^^so it should not be hard to find a teacher who will teach you even though you are left handed :)

      +kitty lynch If you find teachers are reluctant to teach you remind them that you are able to mirror their movements (if sitting face to face). it means you are less likely to reverse what they are doing. This also makes it easy to use most videos

    I'm left handed and just got my first violin as a gift. It has been tuned at a music shop. Anyway, it felt comfortable and natural for me to pick up the violin with my right and bow with my left. I believe my violin happened to be a left-handed violin. The chin rest is on the right for my preferred violin position and it seems like the left hand violin has the E-string at the top. Lucky me. Another reason why I play left handed is because I'm more dexterous/coordinated with my right, so playing the strings with my right is better for me. It's just a matter of practicing bow technique. There are times I try to play right-handed, but it just feels awkward to me.

    needed a refresh on whether or not to keep or change my left handed violin.. I'm somewhat a rare type, I use both of my hands about 45-50% equally. I can write and draw mostly with either hand. I have a guitar that i learn right handed and i am learning the violin left handed. I feel more comfy with my right hand in many things but something happened as a kid where i was forced with my left and grew up as a lefty but not a real lefty. confusing isnt it.. I'm used to hearing how the lefties were forced to be righthanded years ago but im the opposite. I'm gonna keep my left handed violin and learn it, just so I can say i can play either way in any instrument and be proud of myself.

I would really appreciate that.

    My parents are really against me playing left handed but that's what feels natural but I am, however, right handed. My mothers reason is that in orchestras you don't see anyone playing left handed. I just want to play for fun. I tried to play guitar right handed and it was terrible but when I played left it was so easy. My left hand doesn't move as fast when fingering (I think its because I play trumpet). Should I play left handed? If so, how do I convince my parents to let me play lefty?

    • @misery13666

      +Black Knight Most of the emphasis is made with your bow hand. the difference in dexterity playing is not an issue with the fingers typically (unless injured) it is a dexterity difference between the elbows shoulders and wrists. a lefty wont have near as much issue fingering opposite as he will bowing properly. since the bow hand creates the speed, sound, and emphasis, it is a major learning curve

I practiced until I could read my bagpipe sheet music while fingering the strings with my left hand, and then when I tried the real violin I was immediately more comfortable fingering with my RIGHT hand, and could still play. Well I could remember the notes anyway.

    I'm left handed. But if I wanted to start playing violin, should I play left handed or shouldn't I? Since violin playing requieres both hands, I think that if I played right handed, I would be easier for me to finger, whereas if I played left handed, It would be easier to bow.Is any of the 2 diferent parts considered much more difficult than the other, so that it's best to use your "good hand" to do it? Or it just doesn't matter?I say this because it's much easier to find a right handed violin.

    • @Hi-ke1kn
      @Hi-ke1kn 7 лет назад +1

      You can but us o violinists do have to learn how to do certain things such as playing extremely high notes on the e string. But it's quite possible that is if you don't give up easily. But to tell you the truth currently being a o violin player isn't for the faint of heart in my opinion. And also remember you can switch the bridge and strings around on your right handed instrument. But people say the tone would be different unless the insides I.e. The base bar and sound post are switched around to the opposite sides of the instrument. But who knows you might like the sound of your instrument with just the strings switched around. So you pretty much have two options listed here. also, as far as the chinrest and stringing goes, it just feels better to leave it right handed and rest the instrument on my right shoulder rather than my clavicle, and learn the fingering in the opposite direction but on the wrong side. that is how i prefer to play.
    i wish i could find an informal teacher who has a lesser focus on possible long term "form" and "technique" mistakes and could just teach me to play a measure with appropriate feedback - lefties do not frequently do well in strings

    It would be much eaisier for you to play right handed for future reasons. If you plan on going into any orchestras they probably wont accept you because of the bow direction it makes it look like your playing the wrong way so i would not recomemnd playing with a left handed violin.

    Bless you Ryan for addressing the fact that being left handed is not abnormal. I play left handed banjo and left handed guitar both and will be buying your materials and my first left handed fiddle. It is true that most “music teachers” are right handed and they truly don’t get that left handers think in a different process, nor do they care. Don’t waste your time or money with them. I see being left handed as being special. There is little special about right handers.... there are millions of them... not so with us. If any of you left handers that want to discuss this further you can text me at 480 797 4992. Barry Smith.

    I've been playing the guitar "upside down" or "sinverted" for a couple of years now. I mean, it's a right handed guitar, but I play it left handed. It's nice to know I could do the same thing with the violin if I decided to take it up.
    Are there some violins with the standard string arrangement, but with the chin rest on the opposite side?

    I'm left-handed, but I play right-handed. I find it heaps easier because all of the complicated little finger positions are performed by the left hand. I was taught by my violin teacher that left-handed people are better adapted to playing because of this. :\
    Why, therefore, is everyone so upset that they're not able (for whatever reason) to play left-handed? I thought that left-handed people were at an advantage.

    • @random_an0n

      its bs cause your weaker arm is doing the bowing cancelling out the benefit of fretting with your left,if they was telling the truth you would see righties training with their left to get a edge but you never do...
      its basically a lie and cope,righties hate giving any freedom to lefties,they see us as freaks,literally persecution but we dont have billions being spent to advocate for us.

    i play cello not violin, but the principle is the same as with the violin.
    I often have problems with my bow hand (right), being not as good as even people played way less than me. It tends to cramp and my strokes are not as on point as I'd wish to. Pizzicato is also more difficult since I'm so clumsy with my right.
    it's a bit frustrating, since even if I play correctly, it just doesn't sound as great as it could since my bow control sucks.
    do you think it's worth trying to switch to a lefthanded playing, i.e. buying a second instrument with mirrored set-up?
    does it go faster to "relearn" playing after switching sides?

    • @DeeBroughton
      @DeeBroughton 7 лет назад

      Let us know if you do. I suspect it would not be very difficult to switch. I find mirroring very easy as a left-handed guitarist. Good luck.

  • @philnewton3096

    Its all gotta be about chicken and egg evolution of bowed viols.Braccia and Gamba JS Bachs [and earlier old baroque bow for chords superceded by the modern spring bow executing louder chords from modern instruments from the bass upwards and the similar human body symetry to these instruments
    But primarily when the left hand with instrument supinates up to the left shoulder -the pinky[with 3rd neighbour ] has to easily access the E and A strings close by and thwe l thumb acts as a flexi hook on the neck as a tactile guide otherwise they would be disadvantaged if the G was nearest would they not?!,This is obvious for 500 yrs [same principle with Cello and DBass]
    So why would anyone think of playing left handed on a right hand strung instrument -Yes there may be virtuoso lefties there in bluegrass,ethnic music
    etc -playing thus but can wee see hear them in JS Bachs violin music or the Brahms concerto?
    I believe guitar chords are accessed by some " laftie player on a right strung instrument" but fretted fingerboards are another different context completely.
    If they did manage toget to classical music would the down strokes
    be reversed I wonder?
    Major changing the violins innards, soundpost and bass bar and fingerboard and bridge curvatures are for the sonority of the box to be maintained
    [including the pegbox ] so not changing the strings to the mirror image of a right strumg instrument wouls be throwing the baby out with the bathwater!
    The easy answer to all this is ask -whats made it all work for 1/2 a millenium and more to a modern peak of acoustic perfection?
    Outer Symmetry .

  • @harveyking32
    @harveyking32 5 лет назад

    you want a teacher who plays right handed so when they play facing you everything they do is mirrored, as for fully left handed violins? your looking at quite a few hundred pounds to make all the necessary changes. and expect some questioning and judgement from your local violin shop if you make this request. regardless i have a totally custom left handed violin and although its practically impossible for me to play within an orchestra i still enjoy studying the instrument with my friends that play. look into it before you do it. if you pick up a right handed violin the left handed way and are more able to finger a few notes and project a consistant sound. then consider a left handed violin.

    • @rawmark
      @rawmark 5 лет назад

      No, it's not practically impossible. There are lefty violinists in concert orchestras. They just go on the end seat and it's pulled out a few inches away from the person next to you. It can be done and it is being done. So don't let b.s. that people keep stating on the internet prevent you from playing in an orchestra if this is your dream. Even if it's just a small, local orchestra, you can do it.
