It's also interesting to note that the 85 refers to the UTX85 being 85 percent the length of the Ultratech. Whereas, the 70 refers to 70 percent of ALL dimensions not only length.
I have been a long time knife collector. Recently decided I would buy a microtech. This video really helped me decide on the 85! Thanks!

I absolutely love my Microtech Dirac! Great size, (for my hands) & the button placement is perfect! It's been my EDC for about 2 years now. Daily use & still holds a razor edge!
The Dirac Delta is where it's at.....perfect sized and great action in regards to reliability.
@@theselfmadecollective7876 I think it's close to a 3.5 inch blade. I don't know many cops that carry around a measuring tape for these type things lol.

Combat troodon all the way for me , have three and they cycle in my edc in a monthly regular rotation, got my first one over 6 years ago ( tanto plain edge )and it still going strong .
My Combat Troodon has a birth date of 04/2015. I will never trade/sell it.

Helped a ton thanks man! I’m a huge fan of the ultratech for the size. 3” blade, sure it’s a little longer in the pocket but it disappears really. I carry it in the same pocket as my phone and it’s by far the easiest knife to care with someone else in the same pocket. So if you’re on the fence between utx85 and ultratech, go for the ultratech, unless the price difference is out of your budget
This is a very helpful video. I don’t own an OTF but had it in my head that a Combat Troodon was what I wanted, even though I’ve not handled any of these. Now I’m leaning more towards the 85. Thanks for the info.
I'm in the same boat. Was thinking I wanted the combat troodon until I realized it was probably to big for edc. I'm leaning towards the regular size troodon. Did you buy one yet?
I just found out today that the bigger sizes require bigger hands to manipulate the switch. I wanted an ultratech. Left with a dirac.
I just got my first microtech a couple weeks ago. I went for the distressed red ultratech with the apocalyptic tanto blade. It's sweet.

I have an Ultratech with the exact configuration I wanted. I had to wait for like 6 months to get it though.
Now I’m waiting for the config I want on the Combat Troodon. I’ve found some close ones, but not exactly “The” one. I’m patient though 😁
Took me 14 months to get the Socom I wanted! Stumbled upon the CT, Troodon, UTX-85 and LUDT I wanted. Others I just compromised on.
Bought a ultra tech dagger with trigrip black and OD green last week and love it next one will probably be a combat troodon
I pulled the trigger on the standard ultratech tanto ( identical to yours ) last month. I find the 85 a bit too small and the 70 is a tactical tooth pick. The CT is too big and the standard Troodon is expensive for the size although it does fill the hand better than a 85. I find the standard is pretty much perfect on all fronts - size vs weight vs blade length. It’s my only otf in my collection.
Try the Hera. It’s the perfect size Otf for me
I've had my UTX85 for about a year and just sent it in with a broken spring. I don't know how common that is, this was my first. Won't be my last. I miss it already. Extremely convenient one handed lefty knife.

Wanted a all black DLC scarab II with a drop point...but I found one dagger point...just picked it up for a good price. Definitely took your advice! Now....for the blue combat troodon...waiting

Great overview of the different base models. I recently put a Benchmade Infidel on layaway at Blade HQ, then started seriously checking out the Microtech OTFs. Happened to catch an OD green UTX-85 drop point when it came in stock and jumped on it - should be here in a couple of days. I considered the Troodon but, as you said, it's roughly the same size as the utx-85 but with a substantial price premium. The 3" range is my sweet spot for an edc. still debating a full size Ultratech tanto or a Pro-Tech TR3 for a heavy duty "work knife" and the UTX-70 vs Pro-Tech Runt for a Gentleman's knife. in typical knife-knut fashion, I'll probably end up with all of them eventually.

Hey. I just purchased an Ultratech from SouthernEdge… I found 2/3 things I wanted. Single edge. Distressed aluminum. Only thing is I wanted a UTX85!!!! I’ll get one eventually. If ANYONE has a New S/E distressed UTX-85 please holler!!!! Your video helped so much. Peace!

Just got a ludt from southern edges. And a CT d/e from Eknives. Love! So I figured I’d rewatch this video. Lol
just ordered a ultratech od green bronze apocalyptic drop point last night, after watching this I want the little 70 too things sweet.
Love my utx-70!
My biggest complaint is the wobbly button... I know they apparently do it to prevent wear and tear from grit but that wouldn't be an issue if I were allowed to open and clean my knife. My Hogue has an incredibly sturdy button that has no wobble and I much prefer that. The action is also smoother in the Hogue surprisingly too which I was not expecting though the action is slightly easier on the Ultratech.
I’ve bought 7 from Southern Edges in 3 months. Plus they got reward points.
You def gotta get a scarab 2 i think its the smoothest and hardest firing otf Microtech has made thus far
I got a red ultratech on the way. Hopefully it's the same red. Trying to match up with my LUDT.
Quick tip for removing the glass breaker is using the chuck on a drill driver
Just picked up a troodon Signature series in Damascus beautiful otf just hope there dama steel is good quality! Can find much research on it or what material it’s made out of.
IMO, UTX-85 is the best bang for buck. The action, sound it makes, and the size, just seems to be the best of all the models.

6:00 Thats what I want but I can not find ANY in that config that are in stock... That is absolutely the ideal config for most of these microtechs in my opinion.
First OTF was the glykon, just nabbed a carbon hellhound razor ultra, going to wait for a halo 6 or scarab preferably unless an amazing combat troodon makes an appearance
I cant find the bounty hunters in the model I want sadly but I did find one in a model I wasn't looking at that I may just go ahead and buy anyway.
I just got my first microtech and I went with a utx85 stepside tanto stonewash blade...next I'm getting either combat troodon or troodon...not sure which yet
Its Good to live in Great Falls MT i can own and carry a OTF or any auto knife
you're missing out on the Dirac. i currently have my eyes set on the SOG Pentagon OTF as well.
I've handled one. Very nice but I just don't care for double edge. If I ever get one, it'll be a Dirac. The SOG looks too much like a G&G Hawk Deadlock for my comfort level.
That purple Troodon looks really good. In stock anywhere? Edit: Never mind, "one and done." Damn.
@6:28 My action was a little gritty feeling to be honest which I was not expecting. The springs just really feel kind of gritty but the action isn't hard or anything just not as smooth as it should be in my opnion.
the quality difference between $250 microtechs and $400+ ones is definitely something that a lot of people don’t talk about. but it’s certainly noticeable if you have a few microtechs
Can't say I've really noticed it other than the grind on the Hellhound of course.
@@SliceyDicey i noticed on my troodon the button is a lot tighter (like doesn’t rattle) and the firing is smoother and snappier than my utx85 or ultra tech. i also haven’t had a single misfire with the troodon and i’ve had a ton with the other two.

The slider has a spring under it to minimize wear from aluminum on aluminum contact. The small amount of play/rattle is normal.

I have been collecting Microtechs for about two years now. I was wondering what you do when you want to sharpen your knives?
We sharpen them. We just don’t overheat the steel on a belt grinder and ruin the warranty.
Makes me sad you dont have any double edges. That was what otiginally got me interested in microtech. Im still yet to buy a single edge lol.

I wish that Microtech would eventually make an updated version of the Ultratech without the glass breaker or angled part of the clip with the lanyard hole on it. It would be nice finally to see a Microtech Ultratech with the deep carry pocket clip that's sitting flush into a milled pocket at the end of the handle and then have a screw countersunk into that pocket clip. That way the pocket clip and its screw all sit flush into the end of the handle and you would no longer have that ugly/tacticool looking glass breaker at the end of the handle which, sticks directly up out of your pants pocket and it can jab you hand as you go to reach for something inside the same pocket as your Ultratech is clipped to.
Wtf are you talkin about? The glassbreaker is a ball bearing its not stabbing or poking anything in your pocket theyre smooth... and changes youre suggesting would make no sense and make it look dumb. Just buy a different knife.

I'd like to see that kind of clip on the Ultra-Tech/utx-85/utx-70 myself - and lose the lanyard loop altogether.

I always thought troodon was gonna be bigger than the ultratech but Find out it’s about the same size as utx85 now having said that is the troodon worth the price when a utx85 can be had for quite a bit less?
That's why I just ordered a utx-85. I'm sure the Troodon is a great knife but for an edc in the front pocket of my jeans, the utx-85 drop point will serve nicely.

Can anybody link one of the replacement screws for the glass breaker on the back of the utx-85? I'd like to remove mine but not sure where to find said screw
My goto blade shape is always Tanto, usually carring a Microtech Socom Elite Manual tanto BUT for some reason for the otfs i dont like the hell tanto, i dunno if its because of the holes or what but it looks "cheap, gimmicky" probably because M-tech and gas station knives drill holes everywhere to look "cool" n it kind of ruined it for actual great knives

The Makora is the longest knife they make.
Well the one that doesnt fully retract is linger but needs a holster.

I have large hands and even the ultratech feels to small in my hands. My next purchase will be a combat troodon because i feel that eill be the perf size for me. Im surprised people like the 85 because its ridiculously small. Even for edc i want to have something i gan really grip onto in case i have to defend myself. Utx 85 aint it.

I have a the 85 in a spartan blade and I was awake for 10 minutes and I put my thumb on the blade and cut my self
Their main line of knives are still cheaper than other US made options. Benchmade wants 400 plus granted they probably dont make as many OTFs as Microtech.
I LOVE microtech knives, but the infidel (the real one) is an AMAZING piece of art!

Theyre only illegal to concealed carry in some states... theyre not outright "illegal".
There was a 1958 Switchblade act that made all automatic knives illegal in the US.
It was inspired by all of the old movies that portrayed switchblade knives being used by hooligans and they passed this law at that time.
Now people are coming to there senses, and automatic knives are now legal to own and carry in some states, with certain limitations.

I think OTF's should always be double edged
I find the drop point and tanto blades to be more utilitarian. It's all just personal preference.

after getting my hand on hawk deadlock i never money worth in something until i handle those like microtech got destroyed heavily when it comes to deadlock yes u pay ur price for getting a deadlock but if u really love OTF and is one of ur fav knife style (like me) u gotta go for the best and honestly in my opinion i think hawkknife are the best when it comes to OTF 0 blade play and absolutely incredible
