I pulled the trigger on the standard ultratech tanto ( identical to yours ) last month. I find the 85 a bit too small and the 70 is a tactical tooth pick. The CT is too big and the standard Troodon is expensive for the size although it does fill the hand better than a 85. I find the standard is pretty much perfect on all fronts - size vs weight vs blade length. It’s my only otf in my collection.
Combat troodon all the way for me , have three and they cycle in my edc in a monthly regular rotation, got my first one over 6 years ago ( tanto plain edge )and it still going strong .
Helped a ton thanks man! I’m a huge fan of the ultratech for the size. 3” blade, sure it’s a little longer in the pocket but it disappears really. I carry it in the same pocket as my phone and it’s by far the easiest knife to care with someone else in the same pocket. So if you’re on the fence between utx85 and ultratech, go for the ultratech, unless the price difference is out of your budget
I've had my UTX85 for about a year and just sent it in with a broken spring. I don't know how common that is, this was my first. Won't be my last. I miss it already. Extremely convenient one handed lefty knife.

@6:28 My action was a little gritty feeling to be honest which I was not expecting. The springs just really feel kind of gritty but the action isn't hard or anything just not as smooth as it should be in my opnion.
My biggest complaint is the wobbly button... I know they apparently do it to prevent wear and tear from grit but that wouldn't be an issue if I were allowed to open and clean my knife. My Hogue has an incredibly sturdy button that has no wobble and I much prefer that. The action is also smoother in the Hogue surprisingly too which I was not expecting though the action is slightly easier on the Ultratech.

First OTF was the glykon, just nabbed a carbon hellhound razor ultra, going to wait for a halo 6 or scarab preferably unless an amazing combat troodon makes an appearance

That's why I just ordered a utx-85. I'm sure the Troodon is a great knife but for an edc in the front pocket of my jeans, the utx-85 drop point will serve nicely.

the quality difference between $250 microtechs and $400+ ones is definitely something that a lot of people don’t talk about. but it’s certainly noticeable if you have a few microtechs
@@SliceyDicey i noticed on my troodon the button is a lot tighter (like doesn’t rattle) and the firing is smoother and snappier than my utx85 or ultra tech. i also haven’t had a single misfire with the troodon and i’ve had a ton with the other two.

Great overview of the different base models. I recently put a Benchmade Infidel on layaway at Blade HQ, then started seriously checking out the Microtech OTFs. Happened to catch an OD green UTX-85 drop point when it came in stock and jumped on it - should be here in a couple of days. I considered the Troodon but, as you said, it's roughly the same size as the utx-85 but with a substantial price premium. The 3" range is my sweet spot for an edc. still debating a full size Ultratech tanto or a Pro-Tech TR3 for a heavy duty "work knife" and the UTX-70 vs Pro-Tech Runt for a Gentleman's knife. in typical knife-knut fashion, I'll probably end up with all of them eventually.
Great video!!!! I have an Ultratech with the exact configuration I wanted. I had to wait for like 6 months to get it though. Now I’m waiting for the config I want on the Combat Troodon. I’ve found some close ones, but not exactly “The” one. I’m patient though 😁
My goto blade shape is always Tanto, usually carring a Microtech Socom Elite Manual tanto BUT for some reason for the otfs i dont like the hell tanto, i dunno if its because of the holes or what but it looks "cheap, gimmicky" probably because M-tech and gas station knives drill holes everywhere to look "cool" n it kind of ruined it for actual great knives
I wish that Microtech would eventually make an updated version of the Ultratech without the glass breaker or angled part of the clip with the lanyard hole on it. It would be nice finally to see a Microtech Ultratech with the deep carry pocket clip that's sitting flush into a milled pocket at the end of the handle and then have a screw countersunk into that pocket clip. That way the pocket clip and its screw all sit flush into the end of the handle and you would no longer have that ugly/tacticool looking glass breaker at the end of the handle which, sticks directly up out of your pants pocket and it can jab you hand as you go to reach for something inside the same pocket as your Ultratech is clipped to.
Wtf are you talkin about? The glassbreaker is a ball bearing its not stabbing or poking anything in your pocket theyre smooth... and changes youre suggesting would make no sense and make it look dumb. Just buy a different knife.
I've handled one. Very nice but I just don't care for double edge. If I ever get one, it'll be a Dirac. The SOG looks too much like a G&G Hawk Deadlock for my comfort level.

The Makora is the longest knife they make. Well the one that doesnt fully retract is linger but needs a holster. This company has their knives priced wayyyy to high. Then they expect you to buy the thing without even knowing the steel you will get. This company is ridiculous with their self grandeur illusion with their prices. With that said i love Southern edges And with that said if you ever sell that Troodon with the hellhound or the 85 im your guy lol I can MAYBE TRADE MY HALO 6 in the deal Its black

Quick tip for removing the glass breaker is using the chuck on a drill driver
Nice video, I currently have a Troodon Hellhound, Dirac, and a Spartan version Ultratech drop point. All of them are great in different ways.

I just found out today that the bigger sizes require bigger hands to manipulate the switch. I wanted an ultratech. Left with a dirac.

The slider has a spring under it to minimize wear from aluminum on aluminum contact. The small amount of play/rattle is normal.

Took me 14 months to get the Socom I wanted! Stumbled upon the CT, Troodon, UTX-85 and LUDT I wanted. Others I just compromised on.

you're missing out on the Dirac. i currently have my eyes set on the SOG Pentagon OTF as well.
I've handled one. Very nice but I just don't care for double edge. If I ever get one, it'll be a Dirac. The SOG looks too much like a G&G Hawk Deadlock for my comfort level.
