Love Mossberg. I have the 590A1 with a a standard stock. For HD I use a Rem 870 Youth Model in 20 gauge. My 590 is a hard for my 5'2" 125lb fiancé to wield. The 870 youth is perfect and 20 gauge is still plenty powerful. I put a Choate mag extension, XS Big Dot tritium from sight, and a tac light. 7 rounds of #4 buck should stop the threat.

Why a 590A1 instead of 500?

For home defense, I choose 2 3/4 single ought buck, 3" turkey load, and 2 3/4 slug in a mixed order thru a slug barrel. At least one of them will ruin a burglars day. Bought my 500A back in 95 for $100.00 new. Never had a lick of trouble out of it and have taken loads of game. From hogs to turkeys. Going to put the pistol grip and adjustable on it next. Never had a scope last long enough to consider it a ongoing thing. To much shock and recoil to maintain zero.

My Dad bought one of these with 500 or more rounds of buckshot 12 gauge. He did it with around 250.00 in change, he saved over a long period of time.

i just recently bought this same gun in the same tactical configuration and im wondering if i have to remove the stock and pistol grip to disassemble and clean the internals such as the bolt, elevator etc.? i cant figure out another way to do it and no one has videos on disassembling this gun in this configuration. im thinking im just gonna have to get the traditional stock and get rid of the pistol grip if thats the case.

If I remember correctly you can get to everything from the front by taking off the handguard (pump) and the barrel. The slide bars will come out with the pump and then the bolt will slide out. I don't have this gun handy anymore it's stored on my hunting land but I'm pretty sure the stock didn't change the disassembly.

MY 500 came with a hand loop around the pump handle only, and the end cap with a small end cap screw which had to be exchanged if you want to attach a two point sling. The stupidity and incompoetence of Mossberg! No provisions for attachment of a sling to the end of the gun? And Uncle Mikes no long carries the end cap modification required to attach a swivel sling attachment. Epic fail Mossberg!

I'd use a rifle for home defense, but I live in a slave state, so any rifle I'd have would only hold 10 rounds.. still more than enough but meh.
