- We wanted to find out how bad coffee is served at gas stations these days. We survived, but we mostly tasted dark-roasted commercial coffee that tasted very bitter, like tobacco or rubber. We always ordered espresso and cappuccino, and our coffee expert Tomo was glad this challenge was over after 5 gas stations.

Do you ever drink coffee at gas stations?
Did you find any good worth recommending?
I Tryed Shell. (Shell Select)
They work in here our local brand Called "Kahve Dünyası (Coffee World)"
They had 7k dollar Machines (which is maybe low for you but 1 Dollar was 20 Local Money in here)
I Drink quite lot, Espically on our 1 week holiday, Which is very good.
Machines Will Grind and Serve,Paper cup and sugar etc. free.
Famous Rivals were:
Opet (Local Brand,Foreiginer Coffee, Starbucks.)
PO (Petrolleum Office,Half-Local Brand,Foreiginer Coffee,Tchibo.)
BP(Foreiginer,Wild Bean Coffee)
Most Noticable. At Selected Stations.
I Only tryed Shell.
I used to in my twenties on my way to work, before I started grinding my own coffee. It just sounds so horrid now…

I Guess Shell in Country work with Local brands, to i guess dowing the Logistic And Other Expenses.
As an American, I'm shocked that you can actually get espresso and cappuccino at a gas station. All of those look better than the gross drip coffee that's been sitting out all day that you see in most American gas stations.
As a fellow American, I agree. Considering what we pay for burnt coffee and the current value of the euro, we’ve been duped…

Nice video. Here in Brazil it is becoming more and more common to find manual espresso makers at gas stations...The problem is that 90% of the time the clerks can't use them properly

Haha, don’t forget to get a more premium range (if available). As we said in the video, it is still far from the standard in most specialty cafes we feature.

Here in Lithuania the situation is probably the same. Those bitter, ashy, rubbery espresso's is killing. Since I don't like latte or cappucino which probably would hide that coffee taste the only option I get is to make my own at home and fill my thermos. That's it.
Not long ago tried espresso at my local town, one sip was enough to throw away whole cup..

Had to experience this type of coffee in france this summer, not fun!
Ended up brewing a clever dripper on the Ferry back to the uk though, that saved the day!

Honestly; one of the best things is when you find a remarkable Gas Station coffee out of nowhere.
So I'm a truck driver and often get some coffee at a gas station. Most of the time I go to the Shell Cafe which has some pretty alright cappuccino's. They get made by the 'barista's' on the spot. But it's often a hit or miss with them. Sometimes they're at a good extraction, other times they are either under or over extracted. Esso has some decent as well. But I'll always swear by my own freshly made coffee at home.

I think the quality of the coffee is only due to the quality of the machine and the quality of the beans... if someone gets a strange taste or smell might be due to the saturation of the olfactory system with hydrocarbons from the station environment. in my country (Portugal) you can find excellent expresso, 0.7Eur and in a porcelain cup in almost all stations

In the UK, AFAIK all fuel stations only serve coffee via fully automated machines. None are manually prepared by staff.

some years back I remember that I was suprised when I crossed czech border and I saw quite a lot of ''Autogrill'' bistros at gas stations... unfortunatelly, the czech Autogrill doesn't make the good italian espresso like the italian Autogrill, just ugly brown brew, like others do. However, in France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, coffee at the highway is very bad as well...
Based on my own tests 😜 I can't stand the taste of Viva from OMV. It's the worst thing ever. But Shell and Slovnaft is kind of pleasant.
What I really want to know is what water do these places use. Are they really using the regular tap water & if so, how old are those pipes & is it filtered?? An attendant at one station told me the water pipes were probably really old, like before the 70s! Bad deal if u want to avoid lead. I mean do these places even test their water?

Well, it was an automatic (bean to cup) machine in 4 stations, I think 🤖 are okay with constructive feedback, they are not emotional 😅

In America gas station coffee in the morning is a ritual for blue collar workers
The music makes lack of energy more prominent.
8 is a pretty high (too high) score for a gas station espresso. If we consider, 10 is "God shot" specialty coffee espresso, than then it should be much lower than 8. For the next challenge I propose, coffee in fine dining restaurants. Maybe even Michelin star ones. I hear coffee is pretty average in this places, which shouldn't be the case since the chefs are such fanatics about every detail, they even pay attention to the flowers on the table. It's very sad if they look over, coffee quality.
