One musical critic I watched also had an amazing argument regarding the song "I think I'm gonna like it". In the OG it was a huge group ensemble with all the house staff and it seemed clearly focused on Annie loving the attention she finally gets. In the new version it's a sterilized apartment with nothing but tech and no people around her which made the song seem way more materialistic.

I do agree with a lot of your points, but as a high school English teacher, not knowing how to read or being at least functionally illiterate is definitely possible at Annie's age in modern times. As high school teachers, we have a lot of students who have just been pushed through the system, and are years behind their peers. Like, high school freshmen who read at a 2nd grade level, even though they've spent their entire lives in the public school system. It's really quite sad, honestly. So I definitely believe it, especially since Annie lives in the foster system, and those kids are often forgotten.

    • @AmyoftheFlowerField
      @AmyoftheFlowerField Год назад +58

I agree. People like to think that the schools will catch this, but I've worked with third graders who didn't even recognize their alphabet. Annie being unable to read, or at least struggling with it, isn't entirely implausible, especially considering that, according to studies in 2014, funnily enough, about 25% of adopted children displayed learning differences, including dyslexia. Kids like her so easily fall through the cracks and are written off as lazy, stupid, or "hopeless cases". Her struggling/being unable to read wasn't unbelievable to me.

Yeah, when I was 10 I couldn't read any novels, i would only get away with reading the general story on the back of the book and it was convincing. I could only read picture books. I had dropped out of middle school so when I got back in high school I had no idea how to catch up in english and failed many assignments but also barely got into AP English classes. Bit of a correction: DNA tests only really work if the DNA is already in the system in the first place. That's why you submit your DNA and get cross-referenced to other people that have submitted their DNA (or DNA that has historically been identified). That's what maternity and paternity tests rely on the DNA of both the child and the parent to determine matches

Even using line of reasoning if Hollywood wanted to do a modernized version of Annie then they should have used an actual orphan from states that won’t allow gay couples to adopt them, and other adoption centers that there aren’t any adoption happening at all during that film because that actress that Just Stop mentions clearly has parental figures in life, and orphans are supposed to be people with no parental figures in their lives at all.

Im a woc and when I saw the commercials for this movie it gave me bad vibes. There’s an issue I find with remakes where a character trait being swapped is the whole reason for the movie existing, but it doesn’t MEAN or CHANGE anything in the world. The only reason the “girls” ghostbusters existed was to make them girls. Them being girls doesn’t mean anything in the context of the story, it affects the main plot as much as changing a hat. This movies advertising gave me the same vibes, of only existing to change Annie’s appearence, but not the deeper implications of what that would mean, and if it doesn’t affect anything, then why do it at all?

Not every movie with black people has to be a movie abt black trauma or racism or whatever, movies with black people can just be movies with black people (and on a more different note the story itself is not very realistic so I’m not sure if like a scene abt 7 yr old Annie facing micro aggressions from her caretaker would fit the tone)

It was the execution, the quick "chemistry" between Annie and Stacks and just not having the same charm as the 1982 and 1999 versions. So while not too bad for me, it just doesn't feel the same. It would have worked just fine if they committed to actually making a musical rather than taking a musical and trying to “make it cool”. Wallace the young actor who played Annie is incredibly gifted and would have been wonderful in the role if given half the chance. And don’t get me started on how much they auto tuned the voices. However, a few months ago I was in a production of Annie (as Duffy the orphan) and started to realize what the remake could've done better. I was a bit salty that the song NYC was replaced with The City's Yours, since it could've been easily modernized. Also, as the orphan who got to open for Never Fully Dressed, I def think the Sia version did the song dirty. But the point is I saw the movie a TON during then, and learned to sing the songs with those exact inflections, etc. I thought the reboot was so weird, not because I'm usually against reboots, but as you said the constant trying to distance while also NEEDING to say "but, but don't worry, it's still Annie!" in some way. If it had just been a new movie, no songs, stripped down for a modern equivalent, even if the songs were in the background but none of the characters sing it, it could have BEEN a different movie and just done the whole "based on the stage play Annie" in the credits. You'd see it, if you knew to look, but enough people in these comments are unfamiliar with it that they might have enjoyed an honest retelling instead of a dunk session.

What I found shitty about this movie was 3 things:
    1. The orphan girls barely had any screentime, especially the one who said "no one wants to adopt a teenager". I'm still wondering if they managed to get adopted at the end of the film.
    2. Fucking Ms. Hannigan should have gotten her comeuppance instead of a cliche redemption twist.
    3. I'm still wondering if Annie ever learned about her parents and what happened to them. After all she went through, she deserves to at least know ANY possibilities.
I love the originally Annie film as well as the 1999 version. At least those answered questions.

I kept rewatching and watched the other movies, all musical adaptations and basically anything Annie related. I even drove my brothers crazy by non stop singing tomorrow. I told my best friend and her friends about it and she told me she loved it. But then the new one came out and I liked but then all my friends who told me they liked the original started lying about not liking it. Saying the old one was trash even tho before they said they liked it. And I had no idea why. But after watching this I'm now realizing just how much OG Annie was dissed in her own remake. Dang.

So I was 10 when this movie came out, and I remember really liking the movie for the sole purpose that Annie was black and looked like me (my Dad also bore a very superficial resemblance to Jamie Foxx in having hair cut close to his head and a goatee). But as an adult now I have no interest in rewatching the movie again because I remember enough of it to know that it was boring. I also came to the realization that it is incredibly scummy to make a character black just for the sake of making them black (rather than out of a real desire to be more inclusive/representative or tell the stories of people of color) because it preys on black/poc children who will idolize the movie just because it had somebody that looks like them as the protagonist-which was especially true at the time this movie was made, where POC characters were usually only seen as side characters who often served as comic relief rather than being their own person.

It’s so funny how the remake tries to poke fun at the original as cheesy and dumb, only to defang it. As you brought up, in the remake once the fake parents have Annie, they simply put her back in foster care. In the original, it’s heavily implied that Rooster and Lily’s plan was always to kill Annie as soon as possible so they could escape with their money. When Annie tears up the check, Rooster is fully intent on killing her, Lily isn’t bothered at all and Miss Hannigan, realising how serious the situation is, fights to stop her brother before he knocks her out and leaves her unconscious on the train tracks. It’s an extremely dark scene.

They could have made Annie’s parents have her not in a hospital and left on the orphanage’z doorstep. Not having children in hospitals is seeming a trend nowadays (for stupid reasons, really, go to a hospital, because childbirth kills mother’s more than you think), so maybe they were very religious or her mom was a teen and maybe wanted to not get in trouble with her parents. Or she could have been on her own.
I know it’s a kids movie, but having more mature aspects wouldn’t hurt the movie; some kids just don’t get to have their parents, because they have their own issues. It’s why I was sad about the bill that passed about “babies unalive”. I know many people in countries where it’s illegal end up having dumpster babies or child murder even (and that’s a little common in America). Honestly, I just wish we had better protection to children in foster care and for mother’s who maybe aren’t ready for children; nobody should be forced to do something with their body that they don’t want.

Like, it's a small detail, but the 2014 version barely has any ear candy (which make the instrumental more interesting). The 80s version has harp riffs, foley, etc. The 2014 soundtrack sounds like something I would make on fl studio as a 12 year old.
I also like how it gets a little dark at the end with Miss Hannagan having a (sort of) change of heart after Rooster hits her and she realises how dangerous he really is. There's a real sense of threat in the 80s version but 2014's is so saturated.
There are some interesting but half-baked ideas; how kids are neglected by the foster and education system. Focus on Warbucks donating to a school charity to help disadvantaged kids or something. But instead it's so underdeveloped.
Discuss race. They made the raceswap for a reason- it was a conscious choice to cast two black main characters. I'm not saying it's a bad thing or that the whole movie should have been about race, but they missed a real opportunity to have some commentary. That being said, I'm sort of glad they didn't do race commentary because it would have been abysmal and just as half-baked and everything else in the movie.

There is a substantial subsection of high school graduates who are functionally illiterate. The changes to American education in the last few decades (most prominently the "no child left behind" stuff) have made it very hard to hold children back, and there are counter incentives for parents and teachers in many places to even suggest it.

Around the time this movie came out, or maybe it was after my memory is somewhat hazy, we watched the '82 version in music class.
Just as we read "A Wrinkle In Time", the 2018 movie was releasing and my teacher made a bit of a deal of it.
My English Literature class started out the semester reading the first few chapters of "The Hobbit". Coincidentally, the "Rings Of Power" tv show was announced to air soon.
    my point being: weird, huh?

Ngl, I think the karate kid was a really good modern retelling than whatever they tried to do with Annie. Its been so long since I remember it and I don't remember what the plot was that isnt from the original. At least the Karate kid still had heart, also the autotune ugh. This video is cool as I forgot the 2014 reboot existed lmao

This was the only version of the story Ive ever seen. I remember watching it and being bored. Maybe since Im not a fan of musicals, or because I was older at the time and saw it as a late teen. Now that I know it was another soulless cashgrab and actually meant as a launch pad for another one of Will's children I see why it sucked.
I know Will and his family has had a bad rep recently, but he seems like he genuinely wants his children to have a level of success that he did. I feel bad that they were born about 10 steps from the finishline, but its clear that even with their dads wealth and connections, theyre still struggling to cross it.

Great video. You should check out the Disney movie version of Annie from 1999. While I had an obsessive love of the 1982-version as a kid, the last few years I've liked the 1999-version even more, mostly because of Audra McDonald being so perfect in it and it being more true to the stage show, which I've personally seen like four different versions of, seing as Norwegian theatres love staging it. And I also hate when musical movies seems ashamed of being a musical, it's the most annoying thing in the world and it makes one wonder what audience they're making the movie for.

I have faint memories of when my mom made me watch the reboot. I don’t know why, but I always thought Barack Obama was playing as himself, the president of the united states, who also happens to adopt Annie.

i don’t know, as much as this movie probably wasn’t the best technically, it was always my favourite annie movie when i was little because it was literally the first time i saw someone looking like me in a movie. it holds such a special place in my heart, i mean i was obsessed with the original movie too but i couldn’t relate to it just as much, and i didn’t really like how aged it felt to me. me and my dad would just watch the 2014 movie on repeat and listen to the soundtrack constantly, it was really refreshing to see people who looked like our relationship and i only recently realised that was why i liked it so much.

I think you briefly mentioned the version from the 90's but I'd love to hear a full take on that one too. I grew up with both the 80's and 90's versions of the movie, I remember watching the premier of the 90's one even, and I absolutely loved it as a kid. Plus Kathy Bates, Alan Cumming, and Kristen Chenoweth.

I remember I had loved the 2014 version of Annie when it came out and I was never very interested in the original just because of the way they dressed & their hair (I was like in elementary or something okay give me a break-) so I always thought that Annie (2014) was amazing but the second I heard the cover of “Little Girls” in the beginning of the video I realized I remembered nothing from the movie, not the plot, the acting, the singing, anything. Because I actually really like the cover (specifically the dubbed over singer part-) of that song and had absolutely no idea it was from this move

I've seen both movies- and the fact I only remember the first, yet not the 2014 one, says something.
I remember watching the first when back in daycare-elementary times and seeing the 2014 maybe around the time I was in middleschool since it was our last day at middleschool and was movie day.
I can barely remember the modern Annie's characters except for Annie since well- it's named Annie.
I only remembered the original Annie movie the second I saw her, yet it took me abit to try to remember modern Annie.

I'ma be honest. The movie was pretty mid but when you're a black kid it hit different. There were many shows and movies with black girls at the time but they rarely had their natural hair out. So seeing Annie with all her kinky curls out made me feel a lot better about my hair. I even wanted to wear afros instead of straightening my hair.

I don’t get modern musical attempting to “overproduce” the songs in these shows so much. The point of musicals is that they are raw and unfiltered. Even if there might be more mistakes in a singers performance, the moments where their voices are rough around the edges and full of emotion is what makes a musical yknow… a musical. It requires a very talented person to make it to broadway, a person who can make a song unforgettable every time they sing it. So
when you hire actors clearly not meant for musical theater in your movie remake and strip away the little character moments from their vocal performance, you don’t have a chance of pulling off a good musical. Simple as that.
