- THE LANDS OF OSTEN ARD - Before You Read Memory Sorrow and Thorn
#tadwilliams #ostenard #memorysorrowthorn #booktube
This is my first attempt at making some non review content so I hope you enjoy it. I decided to create a video going over the various regions with some small details of the setting and culture for the world of Osten Ard. Memory Sorrow and Thorn has such rich worldbuilding and cultures that I wanted to pay some respect to it and also make it easier for new readers to jump into. Thank you so much for watching. - Развлечения
Where would you live in Osten Ard?
Jao e-Tinukai'i, the Boat on the Ocean of Trees.
@@michaeldelving8033 great answer
Jao é- Tinukai'i if I'd be granted access. Otherwise Hernysadharc.
@@michaeldelving8033 *highfives* I should have guessed you'd beat me to it.
@@ylvsladuchesse2242 we would be lucky to be granted access! Would be cool!
Don't get me started on how underrated and overlooked Tad Williams as a whole is. He is my favorite living author and the only actual spiritual successor to Tolkien.
From what I've read I would agree! Tad lovers unite!
Please make more lore videos about Osten Ard, i just discovered your channel and i'm so glad i did. Your videos are great and our tastes allign!
I'm pumped to hear that. This my first shot at a lore video so maybe I'll do some more 😎
Everyone had a door to Fantasy that they entered in their teen years and sticks with them to adulthood. Most it was Harry potter, to a lot it was Lord of the Rings, to some it was Wheel of time and others it was A Song of Ice and Fire.
For a fifteen year old me, though, it was Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. I love the others but I'll always be a weary traveler of Osten Ard.
That's so awesome. I'm actually shocked MS&T isn't more prevalent as a gateway. It has everything!
@@thefantasynuttwork someone explained to me once that Tad Williams is like Gene Wolfe or Robert McCammon, in that hes a writers favorite writer while being relatively unknown to most.
Trust me, its bothered me now for decades why MS&T isn't as beloved as the rest, especially considering how many authors cite this series as an inspiration to their own works.
@@dugonman8360 yeah Tad has truly inspired so many of the great authors we love. He's special
Good to see that MST left such a mark on you! I would definitely be around for more lore-style videos in this series or otherwise as they are super helpful for convincing people to dive into a particular series or just really show your love/passion for the material.
Thank you so much my friend
Dude, hell yes!! This was so great, keep the lore videos coming man. Your voice over work sounded damn crisp, I'm jealous of that recording quality!
Thank you my friend. Hopefully I get better at the editing haha
The background music, the editing, the voice over *chefs kiss* fantastic video, Jimmy!! You put this book on my radar and now I'm positive I'm going to have to pick it up!
Thanks so much 😭😭😭
It is definitely an awesome fantasy series.
@@michaeldelving8033 yes!!
As a fellow Osten Ard lover, great video. There is so much to dive into and places where I wish I could travel to. I would love to visit the grasslands of The Thrithings or get lost in the Aldheorte forest!
Aldheorte forrest would be sick!
I understand that this video was done some 3 years ago but the algorithm just popped up on my Booktube…This series is so underrated, under hyped and under appreciated on BookTube due to the fact 90% of BookTuber’s are so hung up on Brandon Sanderson that nothing else matters to them…I cut my teeth in fantasy on this series and it’s what sold me on not just epic fantasy but fantasy in general…It ranks as my 3rd favorite fantasy series of All-Time even though it was the first one that I read…Thank You for helping to promote this series I think like you if more people read it more people will come to appreciate and love it and for me personally it is easily one of the top 10 fantasy series of All-Time…
and it’s not done yet as the sequel series has its final book coming out in November…It is a massive sprawling epic fantasy series that is incredibly imaginative and extremely well written by one of the most underrated and under appreciated authors in fantasy Tad Williams…So thank you again for bringing it to the attention of BookTube and to your many subscribers and I hope more people will pick it up and give it a try…😊❤️📚
I love this series!
@@thefantasynuttwork Thank You so much for loving and promoting this series to your many subscribers and supporters…It is such an under appreciated series and it needs big BookTuber influencers like yourself to help share this series with a new generation of readers…Thank You so much…😊👍🏻❤️📚
Thank you very much for this video. I love this kind of stuff. It makes you feel the story so much more👍🏼
Thank you! I love this series and love fantasy maps so thought it would be cool. So glad you enjoyed it 😁
This is such a great video! I love to find new books to me. I’ve never even heard of these but I’m super intrigued! Thank you
My pleasure 😁 thanks so much for stopping by
I've just started reading Tad Williams
this is absolutely awesome! I even ordered the first two books, I would love to see more osten ard lore and culture vids!
Thank you so much!!
this was so interesting and informative! the passion you have for lore/worldbuilding really shines through here and definitely makes me want to return to this series sooner rather than later
Thank you Ridd, your opinion goes a long way with me because you're one of the best!
I love this video! Thank you so much!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
You hit it out the park! Definitely helps me out since I’m slowly making my way through TDBC.
I'm so happy you enjoyed it!
I'm almost half way through the first book! Really enjoying it so far! One of my first fantasy books I have read! I'm normally a non-fiction guy, but the read has been quite good so far! I can't put it down!
That's so awesome, love this trilogy!
Please do more like this!! Really enjoying the videos
I appreciate that, thank you!!
Thanks! I’m half way through the first book! Loving it so far!
So glad to hear that
Super job! Informative and well edited 👍🏻
Glad you think so! Appreciate it!!
You just reminded me of how awesome that Trilogy (?) is! Time to read it again!
It's as good of a time as ever!!
Nice video. As an ASOIAF fan, I am very interested in the series. Hope to read it next year.
It's a great series to follow ASOIAF!
That is EXACTLY how I found it its awesome
LOVE this world! Great video! My favorite peoples are the Sithi, Norns, and the Tinukeda'ya (all of them).
I agree and thank you!!
Fantastic video! I just got here and you’re really helping me get to know the place better keep up the great work
this makes me so happy!
I loved it. Definitely more like this! :)
It's looking like I will!
Enjoyed this a lot, and I would love to see more videos like this from you!
Awesome! I'm definitely wanting to do more lore content in the future 😁
@@thefantasynuttwork You make them, I watch them 😉
I may have said this in a earlier video but I'm old so .... Sorry. Just finishing
" Otherland " and have loved it. And read " The Dragonbone Chair " years ago but now have the series so I'll be going back. Yes, this video is a great help. I've saved it and will rewatch it on day one of the reread. Thank you. 👍
My pleasure! Hope you love MST as much as I have
This was great thank you!
Thanks for watching!!
This is really good man.
If you ask me a suggestion to improve for the next time, you can try to add other artworks, also not official, but that inspire you for the topic you're talking about, in between the map navigation (or what the next main topic will be).
Great job, I'm looking forward for this, and it's good having someone in booktube that deepens this series!
I'm happy to carry the Osten Ard banner! I think next time I'd add some more pictures and transitions. I'm sure I'll get better with this new software as I go too! I truly appreciate the feedback
Lovely video! I applaud ALL content that brings more attention to my fav story of all times!
That said I have a few friendly objections. If GRRM's White Walkers resemble a people of Osten Ard it is the pale Sithi cousins called the Norns dwelling in far the far North in Nakkiga.
Talking of regions you forgot to mention the Thrithings where the the nomad living horse-clans dwell on the vast Grasslands. The Last King of Osten Ard has a whole book named for them => Empire of Grass. Also that series will not be finished this year but in 2022. The Navigator's Children got delayed due to the fricking virus.
And lastly: I bet Tiamak disagrees wholeheartedly about the Wran being awful and boring ;-)
Tiamak is my bro!
I didn't mention the Norns because I was trying to limit spoilers and the Writhings should have been mentioned you're right!
All good observations, Ylvs!
@@michaeldelving8033 it was a great comment!
Starting MSaT in a couple of weeks, thanks for the visual!
Glad to help, enjoy it!
I am now 46. Simon was my reliable companion in one of the most important phases of my life. Always around my age - and at least at the end clearly more king.
He's a great character for sure 😁
JIMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYY this video * chef’s kiss * I cannot imagine how much time this took to do! The background music! Editing! My dude! I’m off to literally start my reread of the first book right now.
This brings me great joy 😻
It was a hard video for me as I have never done anything like this and used a whole new software but I HAD to do it. Tads writing is legit inspiring to me. I hope you can get to book two and three and see that series really shine! Thank you as always for being here with me
I wouldn't say there are many races. There are like four races. The Quanuk, Humans, Keida'ya, and the Tinukeda'ya. There are many human cultures and the Keida'ya (gardenborn) are divided into the Norns and Sithi. I do not recall if an origin is given for the Quanuk (trolls). The Tinukeda'ya are the oddballs of the series because they take divergent evolution way too seriously and from them we have the sentient Dwarrow, Niskie, and Giants (though the giants arent as articulate as the former), and then the more animal like semi-sentient offshoots; the little squirrel dudes in aldheorte, the Kilpa who are like the creature from the black lagoon but in the ocean, and the insectoid lobster boys called Ghantz, and it's implied that the evil mini dirt goblin guys called Bukkan are also Tinukeda'ya. The Tinukeda'ya being the Changling race. While being unlikely, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Dragons could be Tinukeda'ya due to the fact that both originate from the same place, The Dreaming Sea, but other than having the same place of origin there is nothing else connecting Dragons and Tinukeda'ya.
My favorite Fantasy series. I want to like this video a 2nd time! 🙌
Haha I truly appreciate it!!!
Really helpful, love anyone bringing attention to this. Wish I would have saw this before I started.
That being said, your pronunciations of almost every city are slightly different from mine and its throwing me off. Not a critique, just funny how different, every one has their own way for pronouncing fantasy.
He has some of the hardest names I feel... Trying to speak sithi? Forget about it.
I started this series with the audio book and its nice to have someone else do that guess work for you.
Haha thanks! And yeah, not easy to pronounce any of this 😂
thank you for doing this
It was my pleasure, thanks for watching!
I 'm definitely going to listen to the audiobook. I'm also a ASOIAF fan and am looking forward to diving into this world. I'm most likely am going to compare this to ASOIAF, but I know this came out first and is it's own story. Thank you for making this video, it feels like a "before you travel to this country" type of video. I feel like I know the world already lol. I'm listening to the Wheel Of Time at the moment. Maybe in between books I'll listen to TDBC. Cheers!
I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed this. This was my first attempt at a video like this but I had to do it because I want more people visiting Osten Ard. Hope your journey through the series is as enjoyable as mine was!

@@thefantasynuttwork no problem ur channel is pretty cool
@@AhmadHassan-eb2pl I very much appreciate that
That was a really nice video and I think you did it well, giving a nice overview of the different cultures and nations without spoilering anything.
I would only say that it was maybe explained a bit too much from a euro/western-centric perspective. (Regarding the Wran being miserable and Yiquanuc being weird), but still, overall nice!
Thank you for all the feedback! I can see what you're saying about western centric and will do better to keep that in mind!
Far from a first time reader of MST (first read it around 1998-1999. My son's name is even Simon and I call him mooncalf sometimes), but this is still a fantastic watch. Probably going to read the trilogy again now lol
That's is awesome!! Simon Snowcloak 😎

@@MichaelFMeyer-lz5fv nope I think you're good to jump in!
@@thefantasynuttwork i´ve read 25 % now of Book 1, wow there are really a lot of Game of thrones stuff, the throne, the comet, the sleeping creatures under the ice, the man with one hand and more. i love ice and fire and kingkiller chronicle, and i think this could be great as them
@@MichaelFMeyer-lz5fv it truly is, and it keeps getting better. Book 2 & 3 are huge steps up from book one
I’d love to see more
Thank you!!!
This was super helpful, I’m almost done with the trilogy and while my expectations weren’t quite met, I do admire the world he created a lot. I do hope for some follow up of sorts that explains areas like the Stone of Farewell as I’m 150 pages or from the end, and I can’t really understand the importance of that area besides being Josua’s stronghold and a previous Sithi land so if that could ever be in the works, I’ll be really grateful.
Great job!!
Thank you!!
They explain it pretty much every time the Stone of Farewell is mentioned
I'll refrain from explaining in case you're still trying to understand, don't wanna be spoilery
@@jaxstacks1253 go ahead and explain it please, I finished the trilogy and it’s still pretty unclear to me. I went back several times to some passages and I’m still unclear of it other than it being an old elven place that is now acting like a stronghold for Josua’s forces.
@@sa8951 Sesuad'ra(The Stone of Farewell) is where the Gardenborn children made a pact and split into the Hikeda'ya and Zida'ya (Norn and Sithi)
If you're curious about the reason they split I will include it below
The reason why the Sithi and Norns exist as they do today is because of their disagreements about what to do about humans. The Norns wished to eradicate the humans, while the Sithi wished to leave them be, so long as they didn't tresspass in their territories. This argument mainly took place at the Stone of Farewell, one of the Gardenborn Children's territories
@@jaxstacks1253 yes, thank you for this, and I do know this part of the story as it’s related to the dreams Simon had. But, it still doesn’t really deviate much from my previous thought of it being a previous Sithi land that now acts like Josua’s stronghold.
To be fair, this is VERY important to the lore of the world and it definitely added an interesting angle to it (the world is why I kept reading the trilogy even when I didn’t love it love it because it’s so interesting). I personally just thought there is something bigger for it, possibly something related to the swords like a famous example, Mordor in LOTR and it’s relation the One Ring.
Hence my confusion and search, but from your reply and my own experience, I can now conclude this line of thought with: “the Stone of Farewell is an important historical place to the world of Osten Ard, but there is no big thing related to it in regards to the story this time along like the example I provided.”
Thanks again, I really appreciated this.
Library of Viking’s book club is Dragonbone Chair for November so I just told him to share this video with his subs before they start as well to share the original Michael Whalen cover art.
Awesome!
Did you ever finish the sequel series? I didn’t see it on your channel. Loved this video! I hope you continue with other series!
Not yet but will!
I am definitely going, just not yet. I still have to finish my exploration of the Banished Lands, dive into Roshar, experience Earthsea, galavant through Chicago, brave the perils that is the Malazan Empire, and, who knows, maybe rough The Winds of Winter if they arrive ..?
