One of my top 10 fantasy authors. I love the way he writes characters, especially the 'bad guys' in a way that you can really understand their motivations. Such a welcome change from your typical fantasy 'evil just because they're evil' villain. Can't wait to read the new book.
Just catching up and getting back into reading after a long break…. I am returning by reading Mr. Gwynn and his works… so far not disappointed. I just hope Mr. Gwynn or someone close to him creates purchasable ’bookends’ (pewter?) of the two heads from the current series - or just two of the dragon for that matter - in which to hold my JG collection between, I’d be all over THAT! Thanks to Mr. Gwynne for the series and thanks to both of you for the interview!
That's one glorious, glorious beard! (Rothfuss can now diseapear forever in shame- he already should have, but now, he doesn't even have the *best beard in fantasy authors. He's got absolutely nothing left, except.... twitch.)
The dragon is a combination of a snake, a big cat and a bird of prey. All common predators for current day primates and would've been for our primordial ancestors too. It has fire, a human tool which allowed us to terraform on a large scale and keep predators away, human intelligence, and human vices. I think we find it so compelling because it's a combination of ancient external fears of predatory animals and social ones towards the evils of humanity and the weapons we inflict upon ourselves, usually out of self interest. We as a species managed to project our own idea of human villainy onto a composite of our natural enemies. You're probably right that'll be with us as a symbol for a very long time.
Speaking as a fellow Viking reenactor, Mr. Gwynne is so true: combat survival requires a massive amount of luck, esp in big melees. Training is massively important, but sometimes you just don't see the spear coming under the shield edge.......
VIKINGS MEET THE WITCHER? WOOOOOOOW ... I LOVE IT AND I AM ALL IN. Inside, we are all just big kids. Thank you Daniel for getting Mr. Gwynne on your channel and thanks for playing a part in my revival with reading. I am about to start with Ruin and I am loving Gwynne's writing.
The Shadow of the Gods was the book that got me back into reading again last year as I started my own writing journey. I knew that as a writer of fantasy, I needed to reacquaint myself with the current landscape of it. I was instantly drawn to John's cover and I have not been disappointed at all with what lay within. I'm currently on Hunger of the Gods now and I hope that we will see a third, but I heard about the tragedy in his life and either way, I wish him all the best.
Just got it in the mail last night and I spent all night reading it. Not done yet, about 1/5th left and without giving away spoilers... Its fucking amazing!
Gwynne seems dope, am definitely gonna pick this book up. Malice didn't exactly catch my eye, but seeing him talk about his book and inspirations make me want to read this. Love autor interviews
Malice is the worst of the four in faithful and the fallen. Once you get to the last third of malice from then on to the end of the last book it is fantastic and engaging. I read the entire series in one week.
I don't say this lightly but, this is the best book I've read. Ever. The way this is written makes it come alive like a 4k movie in your brain. Hats off!
Of all the Fantasy series I’ve read, First Law and Faithful and the Fallen feel the most similar in prose, pacing and style. Abercrombie’s characterisation is in a league of its own, and Glokta is probably the greatest fantasy character ever written, but in every other category Faithful and the Fallen blows it out of the water and it deserves to be way more popular than it is.
Great interview. While I was sad to see John step away from the Banished Lands, I am very excited to read this new series. It was great to learn a little more about the new book. I'll be reading it very soon. Truth and courage!
I would love to see a visual adaptation of this as passionate as the book itself. The images in my head exploding vividly. Very excited to read the next would highly recommend this book to anyone
Loved this video Daniel! I love the fact that he does re enactment, it's something I've always been interested in, but sadly never taken up. I feel like it would certainly give you the edge as a writer, to feel and go through some of the motions that you are putting your characters through. I can totally see how that would translate to making a more believable character, or action sequence. I can't wait to read this book now! It sounds amazing! Keep up the amazing work Daniel! I can't wait to see who you get to interview next!
100% agree with Bernard Cornwell’s the warlord chronicles it’s brutal and at times a realistic and brutal take on the Arthurian legend I read more historical fiction than fantasy but for modern audicences if you want to get into this series and want to lean more of Ragnarok don’t read the edder you won’t make it it’s harder to read then the odyssey instead read Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman it’s amazing
Book of Three and the prydain books were favorites growing up. I always love when I hear him mention them. I just finished Ruin last night. They're real page turners.
This dude has totally won be over with The Faithful and the Fallen and now Shadow of the Gods. He’s probably my favorite modern fantasy author alongside Joe Abercrombie.
I’ve been looking for a monster and creature compendium for mythologies for so long like over 2 years now and I’m so happy that he brought up one of the books. Man I can’t wait to read his book
Good job Daniel, that was a super well conducted interview. And John Gwynne seems like a really cool and conscientious writer; I went ahead and bought this baby XD
Sounds like a stellar book to read. I really liked the interview and John seems to be a top fellow. He is incredibly well spoken and I am certain I could listen to him tell myths, legends or tales all day long. On top of that I would be enthralled by every word, as mythology is one of my special interests that I studied as university. I had a great lecturer who was just like John, he had the voice and heart to spin a yarn, that you would just believe really did or could happen sometime.
I must say I prefer the side by side set up instead of John here on his own. It feels more like an interview if you're both in frame? But fabulous interview with a fabulous man! ❤️
I'm currently trying not to buy books or start new series but I'm so so so tempted to pick up either faithful and the fallen or this book, and this interview has made me even more eager to do so
I see everyone compliments his beard which is truly fantastic. But besides that he is such a nice and positive man, I really enoyed just listening how you interviewing him.
Wonderful interview. I had forgot to keep an eye out for A Time of Courage so I need to read it to finish the series, but I’m 100% sold on reading this real soon
This might be an L take. But WRATH, RUIN , VALOR…. Are so good.. words can’t describe. Listen. If you were disappointed in the way GOT ended you need to read this series. Not only is it better! But the ending is soooooooooo good. Give it chance.
Finally picked up the book and started reading. As a Norwegian with only average knowledge about the Norse time, I would like to say that everything feels right. It's also fun to see the Norse language used in ways that make sense. We had a one-on-one political debate program on TV in the 90's called Holmgang, because of what holmgang was back in the day. "Lyde" means "obey" (see every time someone yells at a thrall). I have worn a brynje, and that's what we call them to this day. And it just kept going. I am not good enough to confirm it's used correctly every time, but I haven't seen it used badly once. Except the name Svik, which sounds very strange to modern Norwegian ears.

He looks like a fantasy character, and I love it.
He looks like if a Viking were being interviewed from the past. Love the way he put the armor behind him.

John Gwynne deserves the award for best beard :)
Sorry Rothfuss, move over
"A big knife to the head tends to be a really bad start to a day" Honestly, this would be such a great opening sentence for a book.
I feel like being compelled by Big Ass Dragon is just a monke brain vice that we as humans will never transcend
Some people are addicted to drugs, I'm addicted to Big Ass Dragons
@@milospollonia1121 I mean, smoking opium is also known as "chasing the dragon", so there must be similarities.

He weekends as a saxon raider. Good for the old cv
John Gwynne is so relatable and fun to listen to. He deserves all the highlights and more. A great dude and a great author. TRUTH AND COURAGE! 🐺⚔️
