    Just listen to Joe Pass accompanying Ella Fitzgerald or Oscar Peterson - he plays the perfect combination of rhythm, chords, flow and never tries to upstage, just supports and lets them shine, not getting in their way.

    I played my first jazz jam recently, where I mostly 'comped' for the soloist using these 2 and 3 note 'shell voicing' chords, and it worked out great. I listened carefully to the drums rhythm, and I got smiles from these experienced players. A great video. Thanks, Jens😊
    BTW, Ive had some really good guitarists and teachers recommend your videos 😊

      Not to start a debate or any such thing
      It's an incredibly lovely feeling to comp a great soloist, and it is of course equally fun to play the solo. But there's a magic vibe in just listening and keeping the rhythmic flow going. And as a fun side note the soloist usually put in one or two "easter eggs" we all can have a laugh at.

    Another excellent lesson . When you’re comping in a tune, do you usually keep the same exact groove throughout the entire tune, or can you vary it a bit ,I.e., add an occasional 8th, or rest , or change the syncopation slightly ?
    Thank you for your time 🙏

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  Месяц назад +1

      It will vary from song to song, but I rarely stick to a groove and mostly just improvise freely. Locking with a specific pattern is more something that will fit some soloists, and I will do that if it feels right to do so.

    Shell voicings are the only chord voicings I know because I learned them on bass guitar (and I've only got four strings), so it's nice to see how far you can get from shell voicings alone. Also, it pains me when you throw in those walking bass lines because I'm jealous you're a better jazz bassist on guitar than I am on an actual bass, haha--now if you'll excuse me, I should really go do something about that and practice walking over some chord changes...
