Professor Anthony, you are a Corpus Hero! I happened upon AntConc in 2016, having not even heard of corpus linguistics at the time. Your software and tutorials turned out to be the catalyst in my career and academic development as an English teacher and now applied linguist. And AntConc keeps getting better! I like this new version, especially for the concordance sorting upgrades and the corpus manager, which speeds up and simplifies the loading process. Thank you, sir.
Thank you for this good tutorial to a wonderful tool! We watched it in my linguistics class at a German university this morning. Great tool, I use it all the time.

I wish you can share how to use the reference corpus as I am doing corpus based approach on error analysis and I think that feature will help me a lot. Thank you Anthony.
I have two questions about corpus tools. How many file can we upload for making corpus? What would be the maximum size for a file to be uploaded for corpus? I mean what would be the limitations of AntConc or any other corpus tool about number of files or size?
That's a great question. There really isn't any limit on the size or number of files that you can use. But, if you want to view the hits in a file in AntConc, it needs to load the entire file, which can be slow. So, loading files that are the length of a short book should be fine, but combining thousands of documents into a single file and using that to create a corpus is not recommended.
Hi Dr Anthony. you've done a great job, as usual. i need your help with the lemmalist. how do i get word from the same root in the wordlist tool to count it together? for example, if 3 abacus and 2 abacuses are passed in the text, how does the tool count them as 5 instead of counting them separately
Hi, Mert. Did you add your lemma list when you loaded your corpus in the Corpus Manager? You need to supply a list like the following: headword member1 member2 where each word is separated by tabs Let me know if this works.
Stupid question: could it be used to study a corpus of source code for a particular computer language? could it be used to study a programming language?
Sorry for the late reply. Can you define a tag question? If so, try to formulate it in a way that you can search for. The clearer the definition, the easier it will be to search. In a simple case, just search for "don't you" or "don t you" depending on how you created your corpus.
Hi Anthony, such a great video. However I would like to know how to put file into the software. You did not mention how to change file into db type as well.
Hi. Everything is explained in the help file. But, there are two ways. 1) Use the File->Open Files as "Quick Corpus". Here, you just select your files and AntConc will create a temporary database and show that. 2) Use the File->Open Corpus Manager option and then select the "Raw Files" option. Here, you can drag-drop or open your files into the list, name the corpus database, and then create your corpus. Then, you can access this named database or copy/distribute it as you like.
@@AntLabJPN Thank you for the explanation. Can I select multiple files too since I saw in your video, when you clicked the db file, it's automatically showed all txt files too. Or do you have suggestion how to do that as well?
@@kaylerninja In the raw files tab, you can select multiple files. AntConc will process them all and give you a single-file database, which appears in the pre-built corpus tab.
Hi. Try loading a single file from the collection using the default settings. There is a good chance that all the text will be extracted directly and you can use it as is. If it doesn't work, reply back here.
Dear Prof. Laurence Anthony, I am a fourth year English major from Thammasat University who is now conducting research on lexical collocations. I am struggling with my tagged files. I watched your video posted 7 years ago. Still, the wild cards or search terms such as *_NN1 seem not to work with the recent version of AntConc. It would be my greatest pleasure if you could upload the video that illustrates how to deal with tagged files with the latest version of AntConc. Best regards.
@@littlemaewmeaw I've been planning to make a video to explain working with tagged data. But, for now, the simple instruction is to load your data via the File->Corpus Manager and choose the "simple_word_headword" option. If you do this, everything will be processed properly and then you can search for "*_NN1" and all the results will be clear.
Hi. This means that your files are not encoded in the default utf-8 encoding. Open the file shown in the warning and resave it as utf-8 to fix the problem.
Hi, if possible, I would like some help in regard to tagged corpora. I have tagged 2 different corpora and I would like to analyse them in Antconc. However, I cannot hide the tags. I have noticed, however, that the earlier versions, there is a hide tag option. The software is unstable, though, and I cannot work with it due to frequent lags. Is there any way I can work with tags on Antconc's latest version? Thank you.
Hi Dan. Assuming the tags are a standard form (e.g. dog_NN), go to File->Open Corpus Manager and choose the raw files options there. In the basic settings, choose the word_pos_headword indexer and click create. Then, you should have complete control over searching and viewing the tags in the main interface via the tool settings. I hope that helps!
@@AntLabJPN Thank you very much. I was struggling to hide the punctuation and numbers as well, but then I found out the option "filter words" under Global Settings and thus was able to create a document with the characters I wanted to hide using Notepad. @@sakhrinihal9981 Hi. I think you are probably making a basic mistake. First, make sure you can activate one of the default corpora, and generate KWIC results with that (e.g. searching for "the"). If you can do that, it means AntConc is running normally. Next, try to load *one* file from your corpus. Make sure that it is UTF-8 encoded.
