    Hey Laurence, thank you so much for this. It really helps a lot. I have a question and would appreciate your help. I'm writing a term paper for an MA course in morphology; can I search for words which end in the suffix -er? In other words, can I search for words which end in -er, excluding any -er that is an original part of the word?
    I watched the tutorials, but I couldn't find a way. I'm sorry for the trouble. Many thanks again.

    • @AntLabJPN
      @AntLabJPN  9 лет назад +2

      +Hani Na'eem The simple way is *er, but I think you are talking about words like "bigger", "smaller". In this case, I think you need to tag your texts and then search for some kind of comparative form. See my TagAnt program for an easy-to-use tagger.

    • @haninaeem4762
      @haninaeem4762 9 лет назад +1

      +Laurence Anthony Thanks a lot. I will check TagAnt. However, I'm looking for agent -er suffixes like "player, baker, etc.". Anyhow, thank you very much. Your software made it a lot easier for me. I know I'm grateful.

    • @AntLabJPN
      @AntLabJPN  9 лет назад +1

      +Hani Na'eem If you have a list of the words you want, you could just search from them all in one go using the file list search function. Or, use *er as I suggested earlier.

    • @AntLabJPN
      @AntLabJPN  9 лет назад

      Have you tried *er
      Otherwise, you could use the regex option but you would then need to learn the syntax.

    Very interesting! Thank you! Does it work on German texts, too? Or are there any difficulties, e.g. because of the German inflections? And when I let the programme count the types and tokens, does it count only those in the marked file? Or are the over one million tokens from all files shown on the left together?

    • @AntLabJPN
      @AntLabJPN  10 лет назад +1

      Yes, AntConc works fine with German texts. Just remember to set the character encoding of your text files in the Global Settings. The default is UTF-8. You might need to use ISO-8852-1 (Latin 1).

    I wish to check the level of formality in the texts that I would be receiving from students as part of my PhD research.Would Ant Conc be helpful to me in getting me a formality score?

    • @AntLabJPN
      @AntLabJPN  5 лет назад

      Hi Gurmeet! AntConc could be used to analyze the texts to arrive at a set of features that define formality. But, you would have to create your own formality measure based on this analysis. If you can find an existing formality score, you might also be able to use AntConc to rank each text based on the features that you find. But, AntConc is not a profiling tool. You might find AntWordProfiler works better if you have a fixed list of single-word features that you want to count. But, I expect a more advanced tool will be needed to properly profile all texts based on a sophisticated formality measure. I hope that helps!

    I've tried using antconc 3.5.7 64-bit version on my file (UTF-8 encoding) and it couldn't finish the file view function. Although when i switched to an older version (3.2.4), it worked fine for the same file. Just wanted to let you know that there might be some bug with the current version.

    • @myaiua
      @myaiua 6 лет назад

      Oh, actually there is a problem with a 64-bit version of the programme. 3.5.7 32-bit works fine for me on 64-bit Windows 10.

    • @AntLabJPN
      @AntLabJPN  6 лет назад

      Hi. The default encoding in AntConc 3.2.4 is Latin 1 (cp-1252). In AntConc 3.0 onwards is UTF-8. I suspect this is the problem. Try switching the encoding in 3.5.7 to cp-1252 and try again. Better, just save your files in UTF-8, which is now the international standard for corpus work.

    • @myaiua
      @myaiua 6 лет назад

      Hi. The file was in UTF-8, so were the settings of the programme set to. It seems like the problem is with the 64-bit version of it. I can view the text and do the "math" in the 32-bit version, while the 64-bit one shows me nothing. Switching the encodings hasn't helped me, too. The "File View" tab shows nothing, although the processing is done. Perhaps there're some others changes to be made in the settings, that I'd missed, but the 3.5.7 32-bit version worked fine right after the download, that is why I'm assuming there is something wrong with the 64-bit version.
      I guess, you need more feedback from other users to figure it out.
      Anyway I was able to use the programme and got my results for which I'm very thankful for.
      And thank you for fast response!

    • @AntLabJPN
      @AntLabJPN  6 лет назад

      Thank you for the update. In theory, the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of AntConc should always be identical in every way. So, if you can use the 32-bit version but not the 64-bit version, there is something wrong with that. Can you confirm that you are on a 64-bit machine? If not, of course, the 64-bit version will not work.

    • @myaiua
      @myaiua 6 лет назад

      Oh, it's 64-bit for sure. I run Windows 10 64-bit with an Intel i5-7400 CPU.
