Kevin Olusola not only plays cello (including on several other PTX vids), he's credited with inventing "Celloboxing." You should check out his Wikipedia page, and his solo YT channel (start with the cover of "Down").

Yes, please. KO's solo work is amazing! He is a master cellist. His ability to beat box while playing the cello coined the term cello boxing.. He plays multiple instruments and has played cello and saxophone at Carnegie Hall as a teenager. He is Yale pre med graduate that never made it to medical school since he took the PTX detour. He did a stint in diplomacy at the American embassy in China as a college student and speaks fluent Mandarin (along with multiple other languages) I don't think his brain is wired like the rest of us mere humans. He has beautiful vocals and is genius at writing, arranging and producing amazing music. A magical, musical unicorn. His cover of Down will melt your brain!

I think it's worth pointing out that when they did this song Lindsey was a bigger name than Pentatonix. The video is uploaded to both their channels and last I checked Lindsey's still had more views.
Now PTX is the bigger name, but they are still super-hyped to work with her... their most recent collab was on last year's Christmas album.

Kevin doesn’t record his cello playing and his beatboxing separately. He performs the combination at the same time
His collo-boxing viral on RUclips was why Scott contacted Kevin and brought him to LA for their competition on The SingOff.

Absolutely, start with Kevin's cover of "Down" by Marion Hill. He's got other stunning videos out in addition, but I think that one shows an amazing amount of his creativity. He began playing the piano at 3 years old when his parents realized he was a musical genius. The cello came soon after. PTX has a total of 3 covers with Lindsey: Radioactive, Over the River, and Papaoutai. All of them are amazing.

fantastic reaction, Bob! It is always so good to see appreciation for specific aspects and techniques that only someone musically knowledgeable can share. Kevin is the world's first celloboxer, lol. He was recruited to Pentatonix for their Sing Off audition based on his viral celloboxing video, so he quit pre-med and became the incredibly well rounded musician we know, today. He also plays saxaphone, and sings, of course, and has some incredible solo work you should check out. I recommend his cover of "Down" to get you started.

    • @perfectkismet
      @perfectkismet 2 года назад +9

To be 100% accurate, Kevin graduated Pre-Med which is an undergraduate degree. The reason he didn't show up for The Sing-Off audition until the day before is because he was taking his exams. He just never went on to a residency, which is the next step in a medical education.

You didn't know Kevin did cello? Oh dear, some of us have failed you!! Kevin's youtube video showing his skill at what he calls "celloboxing" is what actually blew up & got him noticed by a lot of people. It led to Scott seeing the vid when he was looking for a bass & a beatboxer for the group to apply to the Sing Off, the tv show that got the group started. He does do the instrument & beatboxing at the same time live too.
Kevin can play multiple instruments actually! While still in high school he was asked to play Carnegie Hall on his cello, but they also as an encore had him beatbox & play sax. (Or was it trumpet? I forget but either way he plays both.)
Basically Kevin is one of those rare 1 in 10 million people that is just AMAZING at doing so many things (not just music/singing/instruments) that he seems inhuman.
At every PTX concert they always have a few songs with him celloboxing AND usually have him do a solo celloboxing performance too. They want him to be sure everyone knows & appreciates what he does in the group since he rarely gets to sing or rap as they need him to be doing the beats so much. Even the bass gets to sing a fair amount considering Scott can take over the bass position sometimes. Though Scott can't go as low as a real bass like Matt or Avi, his low & high range is very good!

Kevin was an accomplished musician before PTX. His first instrument was piano. As a teenager, he played Carnegie Hall twice. Once with his cello and once with his sax. Kevin Olusola, check out some of his solo work. Yes, he coined the term cello-boxing. He plays and beat boxes simultaneously. That's actually how he was discovered for PTX.

Kevin does 'cello boxing' where he plays his cello (which he has named Beyonce!) and beatbox at the same time. He's incredible. He plays several other instruments. As a band teacher, I'd really recommend his cover version of the Marian Hill song Down where he uses a loop pedal to sing, beatbox and play electric cello all at the same time!

I'm late to the party (as always!), but I love seeing a reactor who can appreciate Lindsay Stirling. She's been one of my favourite musicians, I found her randomly when someone sent me her Legend of Zelda track. I became so enthralled with her music that I actually walked down the aisle to one of her songs, and then played another a couple of years later at my husband's funeral. She also introduced me to Peter Hollens' music, who became another instant favourite. And of course, Pentatonix - they deserve all of the accolades they're given. I would love to have the chance to see PTX in concert with my son. He's 9, and tells me every time they come on that Mitch soothes something in his soul, and that his voice makes him feel seen and understood. This was a great reaction, I hope you dive into more of Lindsay's work, Peter's work, Kevin's solo work, Mitch's solo stuff as both Mitch Grassi and Messer, and keep loving life my friend!

Late to the party here. I don't know why I have seen any of your reactions before. I plan on rectifying that for sure.
This was a remarkable reaction. I don't want to accuse you of being sophisticated, but you nailed so many nuances that I haven't seen mentioned in other reactors. The additional notes that Lindsey added, for example. She's master at collaboration. She said in an interview about this song, that she didn't want to stand out, she wanted to blend in, to be like the sixth Pentatonix.
In her collab with Evanescence on Hi-Lo, Amy Lee left her a hole and told her to "Shred!", which she did. But, where she really shines is when it's her song and she's doing it her way. Which is why I would recommend taking a dive into the Lindsey Stirling rabbit hole.
She has some of the most diverse, most nuanced and most creative writing and performing you'll ever see. And, she's not just an amazing violinist and powerful dancer, she writes, arranges, concepts, storyboards, directs and edits almost all her own videos. In addition, she even makes the costumes. Same for her tours, she's the creative director and there's not set design or a light bulb that doesn't have her touch.
Given your background in band, you'll probably appreciate that she's basically a one woman band and almost everything she does, other than the violin, is self-taught. Even that as well, to some extent. Her parent's could only afford a 15min lesson once a week, so she made up the difference with diligence. She's worth a look simply because you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that can do so many things so well.
Hope you do more reactions to her, I'd be interested to see what other things you find.
    Again, excellent reaction! Thank you.
To prime the pump, so to speak, may I offer up one of my favorites that shows off many of her skills. It's an oldie, 2017, "Carol of the Bells", off her first Xmas album,
It's a favorite for many reasons; one, I just really like it. It's the ONLY instrumental song to EVER reach the Top 10 on AC Radio and a year and a half ago and it was rediscovered, (in the summer if you can believe it), and has now blossomed into her 9th most viewed video, with over 125M views. Kind of a short masterpiece.

She has released 4 albums of all original compositions and she has two Christmas albums that have her own touch on traditional songs a some of her own compositions as well. Her latest Xmas songs are "O Holy Night" and "Joy To The World" which she put a Celtic touch to it. It's not "the Pentatonix" it's just Pentatonix.

Idk, it’s remarkable but I can’t see myself listening to it. Yes everything is incredible but it lacks the punch of louder instrumentation. They are definitely an amazing niche act who no doubt have their following. Maybe I should just check them out on Spotify. The violin and cello add a lot. 🤷🏻‍♂️…🤔🎼🎤

Yeah the celli and violin sounded so cool in This one. Their cover songs are pretty amazing the way they are arranged.

    They're "Pentatonix"! Not "the" Pentatonix!

You should give Lindsey Stirling a spin. Shes pretty different from what you have done on your channel. Shes ALWAYS been very unique

I sorry Bob but it just Pentatonix not The Pentatonix but this annoys me no end when Reactors can't even say the band name correctly. If you look at the title for this video and all the others you have done there is never a 'The'

Yes Jo I do know it’s just Pentatonix but there are times that it doesn’t make sense not to say the when referring to certain things. I’m not trying to call thr the Pentatonix. Sorry for thr confusion.
