Hi Terry. Yes I have Baritone ukes and I did change the strings to GCEA. One with low G and one with High G. The low G one seems to have a deeper, richer sound and turns heads in my ukulele group.
I have a baritone ukulele, and I keep it the normal DGBE tuning, but my reason is that I treat it like a reverse capo, and it allows me to sing in a more comfortable register. So I play the chord shapes of a traditional ukulele, but end up singing in a lower range. I don't play with others that way, but it works for me when I'm just playing and singing by myself.
Thank you for the info. But, it would have been much better if you actually showed that it would work well across the fret & hold the tuning. Hope you do a future video actually showing it will work instead of just saying it will work.
Hi. New subscriber. I'm going to do this today. I was literally going to switch off and go to the bus and this popped up. This video nailed it for me. Thanks
I just got a baritone and it's throwing me off. The guy said, same hand shapes, yeah, it all still works fine. And he got my money. But that isn't really true, it isn't the same. I am determined to learn though. So I subscribed. Hope y'all can help me!
Try putting a capo on the fifth fret of baritone ukulele and play regular gcea ukulele chords. I do this on all my 6 strings guitars but have to ignore and can’t strum the E and A strings (6 and 5 strings). You wouldn’t have to ignore any strings on baritone uke. Rich Davis has a video on turning baritone uke to gcea with a capo.
Good video. Sometimes you will find that a few baritone ukuleles actually come with the "high g" set of strings on them. In regards to the commercially licensed music that I write and record, I actually have two baritone ukuleles one with the standard low d and one with the high d string set. I also like using Aquila strings on both, especially the Aquila 23U Nylgut high g string set. The other thing that people can do, is put a capo on the 5th fret of a baritone ukulele that is in standard low d tuning... I've done that for years in the past. It can be a bit tricky to fret in first and second position after the capo
I have an Ohana Baritone I keep it tuned dgbe. I have a tenor that I rarely play tuned gcea. I have found I LOVE my Bari more and more each day. But my Lil' Martin LX1 runs a close second. I find myself playing the Flight concert with the Low g if I'm playing the gcea voicing. Funny how we gravitate toward certain instruments.... I own more than the above mentioned.
Thank you that was a great video, very informative. I have a baritone ukulele and I tuna dgbe but I like the sound better with a capo on the first or second fret.
I’m thinking I might need to order a baritone. I’m almost 5’10” , as a woman, my torso and arms are longer and convert and tenor uke seem to not have me left hand out long enough when playing so it gets uncomfortable for my wrist, neck and shoulders after a very short while.
Does it still sound like a baritone if tuned like a tenor as far as the richer sound. Can you post a comparison of 2 baritones... one standard timing and one tenor tuning?
I bought GCEA strings for my baritone ukulele but they’re so tight and uncomfortable. Why would that be? I bought the Aquila New Nylgut AQ-23 High G Baritone Ukulele Strings.
What about tuning a tenor (I.e. Grand tenor) like a baritone? love the sound of the baritone uke but done want the expense of having to buy another uke, plus I actually would like to learn new chords
Hello. I saw your question here. You can tune your tenor to a baritone, you need to use "Aquila Baritone Ukulele strings low d", you can find those on Amazon. Aquila strings are great in general, but also the tension is a bit higher so it will work with tenor ukuleles. The other thing I can tell you and a lot of people don't know, that back in the very late 1940's was the inception of the baritone ukulele, around that same time tenor ukuleles were tuning the same a baritone ukuleles in that same low d tuning/string set.... probably because of the availability and also over all cost back then.
@@MrTom-Songwriter-Composer I actually bought the Ohana BK 70 which has a tenor body and baritone strings and have it tuned to baritone tuning, I love it and it sounds wonderful, one of my favorite ukes in my collection. I also have two tenors that I have tuned F#; B, D#, G# that I play with the normal GCEA chording
Hey Terry, can you tune a tenor guitar with 4 strings like standard uke tuning? Am really interested in steel strings. If yes, which strings can Be used? Thx 🎸

Capo the 5th fret and you have a low G uke. I do it all the time.
ok thank you. I do not own a baritone and I keep wondering if this would work.
@ivan terrible I was just about to put in the same comment.
This is what I do, too!!
And just like that with this single comment you solved my problem! Thank you. Im buying baritone
Hi Terry. Yes I have Baritone ukes and I did change the strings to GCEA. One with low G and one with High G. The low G one seems to have a deeper, richer sound and turns heads in my ukulele group.
Sorry, am new to ukelele
As you mentioned, you replaced the gcea string. But it has only one g , so how did you tune high g and low g
What strings did you use? Thank you.
What are your thoughts of a baritone tuned GCEA with a low G? And would you ever do a video comparing this tuning with standard baritone?
I have a baritone ukulele, and I keep it the normal DGBE tuning, but my reason is that I treat it like a reverse capo, and it allows me to sing in a more comfortable register. So I play the chord shapes of a traditional ukulele, but end up singing in a lower range. I don't play with others that way, but it works for me when I'm just playing and singing by myself.
Ive wondered about doing this.
Guess if you want it gcea...you just cap up 3 frets?
I achieve a drop with contra strings. My Kala baritone bamboo is GCEA an octave down.
Thanks for that , great help . I just like the thought of the bigger Uke
bought the Lava strings from you and put on my baritone...awesome sound
from mini-guitar to maxi-uke!
Yeah you can. I have a Cordoba baritone tuned a tone down from low g: F - C# - D - G. I love the way it sounds.
Wish you would have actually showed a baritone with tenor strings, & played the same song on a tenor & altered baritone to hear the difference.
Very cool Terry. Been thinking about super tenor but baritone tunes like tenor...🤠
A link going directly to the strings would have been awesome because I couldn’t find them. Sent you an email though, thanks in advance.
Yes I have a baritone thanks for information.
Thanks so much...x love the Baritone
Thank you for the info. But, it would have been much better if you actually showed that it would work well across the fret & hold the tuning. Hope you do a future video actually showing it will work instead of just saying it will work.

It is the same hand shapes but the chords that are on those shapes are different

I just like the size... That's what she said 😁

Aquila 11U New Nylgut Tenor Ukulele Strings (DGBE) How about these? Your thoughts appreciated as the Pepe Romero strings are very expensive.
I’m thinking I might need to order a baritone. I’m almost 5’10” , as a woman, my torso and arms are longer and convert and tenor uke seem to not have me left hand out long enough when playing so it gets uncomfortable for my wrist, neck and shoulders after a very short while.

Yes a link necessary. The reason i clicked was to learn what strings i need
I put tenor strings onto my baritone ukulele, didn't play it for years and was very very confused when I tried to tune it again in baritone😂
Sure. I play a 5 string baritone tuned gGCEA
Are the strings that are sold high G or low G ?
Could you put a link to those strings? I looked but I couldn't find them.... thanks. : )
Went to the store did not see any Aquila Lava for Baritones with a low g. Are they available at your store anymore?
Pls give url to yr store
can i keep the same strings if i tune my baritone with low G?
Hi, I’ve been looking for a leather ukulele strap like you’re wearing in the video. Do you have those in your store?
When I search for the Lava 117U, I only find a High G set. What G string is on yours?
I bought GCEA strings for my baritone ukulele but they’re so tight and uncomfortable. Why would that be? I bought the Aquila New Nylgut AQ-23 High G Baritone Ukulele Strings.
Thanks great info
Can you string with low g?
Great information 👍
If I put those strings on the baritone, wouldn’t that eventually warp the neck?
I own an 8-String baritone ukulele and always struggle to find strings.
Can you just use a capo?
Or... You could just buy an Ohana Bari-Tenor(baritone body, Tenor neck).
What about tuning a tenor (I.e. Grand tenor) like a baritone? love the sound of the baritone uke but done want the expense of having to buy another uke, plus I actually would like to learn new chords
ooh good question!
this is the same question i have

Would that play an octave lower? I.e., would the higher note on an open string be A3? Thanks!
How do I get the low d strings your using on here ?
Can you put regular tenor strings on a baritone or do you have to use those strings.
i think the length of the tenor string is not enough because baritone is a bit long
but im still wondering if you can tune the baritone without actually changing the strings
Hey Terry, can you tune a tenor guitar with 4 strings like standard uke tuning? Am really interested in steel strings. If yes, which strings can Be used? Thx 🎸
Hey Jules, did you end up finding anything like that?
I’d like to tune a baritone in 5ths.
More interesting question: Can I tune a soprano ukulele like a baritone one (so I do not have to remember two different ways to grip the chords)? :p
I think i saw somewhere that ukulele strings don't fit on the soprano
Can I tune my tenor as a baritone? I did it and I like it.
Ed Ross another online ukulele teacher likes playing a baritone tuned to gcea for playing jazz.
Are the strings with a low ‘g’?
Tenot banjoukulele like a baritone?
so why didn’t you… and then compare the tone between the two… shame
GAMECHANGER!!!
Oh my god so much talking just to say so little
COME ON AND GET TO THE POINT!
