I think at this point you're either in for what Gilmour does with his solo efforts or you aren't. I don't suspect this will be a wild departure from his sound on any of his last two albums, and I imagine the lyrical content being done with Polly means that will also likely be similar.
I doubt it'll enter the rotation as much as some of his other stuff, but I'm glad the man is out there making more music.

Whatever this album will end up being, we shouldn’t have too high expectations. Gilmour at this point is only doing music that he likes, and that he wants to make. Don’t go into this album expecting something on par with Pink Floyd. That is not what he is trying to do. Personally, I think that Rattle That Lock is his best solo album. Faces of Stone and In Any Tongue are absolutely amazing songs. So far I love The Pipers Call and it makes me excited for the new album. But as I have learned from his previous album, every song could sound completely different from each other. This guy is my musical hero, and he completely obliterates any popular musician of the last 2 decades in my opinion.

    • @rft2001

I feel that many Gilmour solo songs channel the pre-Dark Side Floyd and I'm fine with that as that is my favorite era. He's my musical hero as well. I put On An Island as my top album of the 21st Century so far. I have to say that I love this new song.

"Faces of Stone" - Gilmour's personal "Mother". I just like every song from the first two solo albums without exception. The last two albums spread a strange basic atmosphere that is somehow fascinating, but in no way makes me comfortable. Except maybe in the car, on the country road, which perhaps serves as a balancing pole for me. Edit: Saw Gilmour live for the first time in 1984.

I completely agree. Too many fans are still expecting everything he does to sound like Pink Floyd and that’s just not what he wants to be doing anymore. Personally, I loved both On an Island and Rattle That Lock and every time I hear The Piper’s Call, I like it more and more. I love how it builds, the layers of the ukulele, to the classical guitar, to the lap steel, capped off with the Les Paul solo. I also like the production. It is different to anything David’s done before but that’s what I like about it. The man is almost 80 and still exploring new ideas and new directions. It’s fantastic! I think we’re in for a real treat come September!

@@TehDubster Come on, he has only released one album since 2010, so how is that ruining his legacy? Rattle That Lock wasn't as good as On An Island but it was still good. The new song channels the sound that he had on On An Island in many ways. His solo material has a lot of that pre-Dark Side Floyd sound. In no way is he ruining his legacy, not in the least.

Nothing is being ruined, the man is nearly 80 for god's sake. Be grateful he's still kicking and putting out something new even if every song isn't Comfortably Numb over and over. One of my first thoughts hearing the new Gilmour song was: "What's Gilmourish gonna think?"
Been perusing the website ever since I stumbled upon my dad's CD of Division Bell and fell in love with everything Floyd and Gilmour's simply beautiful playing. Whilst I never picked up guitar playing myself (although I did play a bit of bass) I've always been fascinated by how Gilmour builds his sound. From his love of effects and fuzzboxes to those ear blisteringly loud Hiwatt amps. Oh and rotating speakers. That detail always sounded so wild to me.

  • @startrekmike

Gilmour's solo work has always felt pretty solid to me and a lot of that comes from him just doing what he enjoys. More importantly. He is willing to Let his music age alongside him. He isn't trying to recapture his time in Pink Floyd or just maintain what the consumer expects of him. He isn't trying to just be a jukebox of his prior hits. He is older and his music reflects that in a honest, endearing way.
As far as this track goes. I quite like it. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

I expect that he will tour along similar lines to his 2016-17 outing. Last week, Guy Pratt on instagram posted a photo of his new pedal board with a caption that said something to the effect of, “this baby’s going to get a lot of work over the next year “. And Nick’s band only has dates set for June so I think that was a pretty good clue. Also, if you’re David, why release a song in April but not the album until September? Because you want to build excitement while you’re rehearsing for the tour. That’s the best reason I can think of.

I hear elements from the album Rattle That Lock. Maybe that's a new direction in terms of composition, but I also can't help wondering if some of this material will be leftover tracks from Rattle That Lock, with a smattering of new material thrown in. I love Gilmour's music, and ultimately I don't care which time frame the tracks were recorded in, but when he auctioned off his guitar collection, I (perhaps incorrectly) assumed that he was done. I didn't really expect a new album from him at all. This is a pleasant surprise.

Even it got interesting harmonies, starts sounding like the myxolidian scale then the root note changes from major to minor on the chorus, then starts to get more power and that Solo is amazing cause mixes the pentatonic scale with some blues notes and 6ths, the final brings you that feeling as “hey this stopped suddenly but looks like much more is coming”. And yeah, I got the same goosebumps ☺️ He really nailed it in the chorus section, in every department. It makes it definite an earworm ☺️ "The promise of eternal youth..." 🎶🎵 And I really like the effect he used when introducing the electric guitar. It's like a... worked up tremolo? So nice the first one. And the synths... with the absence of Richard Wright (if he was that of an influence on the direction of that sounds in Gilmour's solo albums)... gave this song a new style indeed. It reminded me of the sound of the band "Air". Very nice!

I find that "The Piper's Call" is very fresh. A bit of a surprise for David. It still has the typical Gilmour parts, the guitar solo. The solo is modest I think, certainly, compared with earlier solos. It is not type a song that you would expect from a man this age.

Piper's call is a Gilmours album, although we would like to be pinkfloydish, it isn't. Finnally is Gilmours enjoying playing more than 6 guitars, playing in an empty cathedral rather simulating an rare reverb, simple drums that are guiding all the song and when you are thinking where the solo is ... pammm there is a wonderfull but simple playing with a espectacular ending. He´s 82 years young ... he´s really a legacy, andyes there is a sneak peak of a black strat ... ie everithing, the subtle things that are saying outloud, it's me the new one, but still the old one. FAN TAS TIC! ...imho Greetings to all!

I pretty much share your sentiments. There`s something new, but at the same time it reminds me of both "Take a Breath" (On An Island) and "Coming Back to Life" (Division Bell). It builds. That`s part of it`s success, and I have to say like many others; "- love the chorus and the guitar solo!" There`s a lot going on, but it`s subtle; -an artist in total control of his medium. There are Bryan Ferryesque tam-tams at the beginning. Its lovable, especially together with the video. Let`s hope the other songs on the new album are just as good as this, and not mellow fillers; - a rock album that flows. Like some other here, I don`t think the last album "Rattle That Lock" deserves much praise; -comfort music for the broken hearted.

Gilmour's first album was awesome but he's at his best when he translates strong concepts into his powerful guitar playing. The anger of Shine On, Have a Cigar and the whole of Animals, The Final Cut and The Wall are without equal. Everything else he does is so-so topped with sublime guitar.

Couldn't have said it better myself, including your underwhelmed assessment of Rattle That Lock - with the exception of A Boat Lies Waiting, which rips my heart out and stomps on it every time. Given his age and the glacial pace at which he produces his art, I wouldn't be surprised if this is his last release of new material (though I want to be wrong about that!), and if so, I hope he rows off into the sunset on a high note. This song resonated with me on first listen, so I have.....not going to say the obvious thing.....raised expectations.

I like it!! It's David "Cruising" ...Cruising music. Early Pink Floyd was a "Sonic Experience" with all sorts of experimental s interwoven. Although this song in my opinion is not one of his greatest..I do like it and he has incorporated a little of those sonic moments into the back ground. Of course the solo is laid back, cruising, & unmistakably David Gilmour. ( I was of course waiting for something out of the box here) However, it fits with the overall theme of the song. I've played it quite a few times, the more you play it, the more you like it. Looking forward to the album!! 😎✅

Yes, the verse section is weird and not very easy to enjoy, and he increasingly has a habit of over-emphasising the lyrics (which really annoys me). However, the chorus was a pleasant surprise. On the whole, the song was a solid 3/5 or even a 3.5/5 for me.

Every time I hear these sickly sweet, mellow, middle of the road folky songs, I get the feeling he's trying to write his best attempt at Beach Boys album he could never really write. Contrast Gilmour's decision to bring in a co-producer that doesn't want him to make more of the same, with Waters being persuaded to let Nigel Godrich make "his version" of a Pink Floyd album, and then dismissing it as "throwaway songs." David was very much in quiet family mode when he made On An Island, surrounded by toddlers that are now adults who are actively influencing and contributing to his current work.

Love the Floyd albums ''Meddle'' through to ''Animals'' and quite like a lot of his solo stuff up to ''Rattle that Lock'' but I am seriously underwhelmed by this offering. It is pedestrian, with no real dynamic changes. Yes Dave plays as well as he always does, but it all seems so safe and unadventurous. His voice seems tired and the lyrics (Polly is no Waters) are like a watered down retread of previous songs (''Lost for Words'' for instance) voicing the same disillusionment but without the venom and it ultimately just falls flat.
Hope the rest of the album is a bit different / better.

"a new direction" is that what you call it? that's being very kind to David... "production that is un-Floyd" is spot on. dryish sound that is made for an engineer's pleasure, not a listener.... i thought the song was square, monotonously slow, musically simple, no glue, and just boring.... i'm as big a fan as anyone but this song is well below expectations.

The line "steer clear of the snakes" had me curious why David didn't steer clear of Polly Samson. I mean, if that line is directed at Roger, no matter how tough, controlling and brutal Roger was in early days, his concepts and his ideas brought the other three members fame and truckloads of money. They didn't have any of those ideas, Roger had them. Yet it is Roger who is always blamed for everything and never gets a thanks from anybody. It's certainly convenient for other parties involved to make him the scapegoat and the villain.

I have a bootleg somewhere from the Pulse era where Gilmour says something like "Thanks to Roger, even if he doesn't want to hear it." I think he's been pretty clear about how they were a team and that at a certain point the relationship fell apart.

@@DavidDyte1969 Yes, and that was 30 years ago, Pulse. Today it's different. David hides under Polly's dress while she harasses Roger on social media. And David gladly approves like a henpecked sponge of a submissive, complacent husband. Things have catastrophically worsened since Pulse, beyond repair. During Pulse days they even invited Roger to participate and play as a band. This won't happen today, not even a theoretical chance of seeing the two together. I'm sure David still knows inside Roger's vision and direction in the 70's was vital. Yet here we are, "Yoko" has totally subdued her "John"..

David's guitar work is amazing as always, and the production is superb, but Poly's lyrics are typically bland and unmemorable. So, Pink Floyd this is not, and I suspect this is deliberate on David's part. The only song with lyrics on his recent solo albums that stood out for me was Sorrow. His first solo album was superb, and I think the simpler production on his debut solo album brings his voice and guitar to the forefront. But of course I've pre-ordered the new album off Amazon. And of course I'd see him play live in a heartbeat. So I'm happy for the new music. I just won't pay too much attention to the lyrics. Here's hoping for a couple of instrumental tracks!

I think it's more of the same as his last album. Worlds apart from the vibe of his work on Division Bell etc. I know this is him being him and not Floyd I get that. Just hoped there would be some Floyd vibes about it and there isn't for me. Would have liked Polly to leave it to him tbh. Still making music though at that age hats off to him.

    I do not know..
For me, her latest song, the sounds chosen, the lyrics of the song, everything that is revolving around this thing and above all her words in this interview, I was saying, give me indescribable anguish. This new way of being, honestly, also intimidates me. I'm not getting good sensations, and with David Gilmour it's the first time that's happened to me after a whole life spent loving him and listening to him. I just read the long interview with Gilmour in the magazine "UNCUT"...
To me, more than the previous musicians replaced because according to him they seemed to have become robotic, almost a Pink Floyd cover band, he seems to have become the true "robotic", but of himself. And all this scares me even more and quite a bit.
For goodness sake, I find this latest song of his beautiful, yes, but I think he allowed himself to be slightly depersonalized by the "new entries" of the production. Paradoxically I find the final solo to be the least successful part of the song, a bit like "Today" from the previous album, placed there
"just so.." that you don't even remember it after 10 times you've listened to it, a useless and sterile solo, and for a guitarist of his level I find it decidedly bad. If the final guitar solo had been done on the chords of the song (or the chorus, let's call it what we like...) the song would certainly have had a different flavor and another color. The choice then not to end the song in fading away depriving the listener of that usual delicacy, perhaps to please the modern kid producer on duty, was then the icing on the cake, but a cherry with a bitter taste. Nice song but with a really bad ending.

I blame the day David met his personal "Yoko". He's never been the same since. Some women can empower man, inspire him to be a better version of himself, but some can make a henpecked sponge of him, a submissive, complacent "hubby". I believe that even by the time of ever controversial AMLOR album, when "Yoko" wasn't around yet, David was still his own man. I think David's first wife had a positive effect on him. He was writing amazing, inspired things, living the golden times as an artist. Some of those things he wrote by that time could even be called genius. But not since "Yoko" has injected herself into conversation, no. It's been going downhill ever since and ultimately it had no other place to go but to hit the rock bottom.

@@Mxulin Neither of the two put out anything of best Floyd quality, yet 1992 Amused to Death album puts everything Dave released as a solo artist to shame and oblivion. Having Jeff Beck to play guitar on the record helped. Dave is only qualified to do Jeff's laundry, after all, as are most guitarists. But with Jeff by his side, Roger ultimately proved to the world he doesn't Dave to make a great record, like many suggested. "Oh, Roger can't do it without Dave, he absolutely needs Dave". BS Bwana!!! He just went and did it.

Perhaps, there is no workaround and there is no other way. It's exactly the music a man writes at his 78 years of age. Grandiose art rock opuses to expect at this point, people are merely wasting their time if they do. It's just delusional, disappointment brought by your own futile expectations. David claimed he's not going back. He's moved on and we shall too. Just let the man be, he's 78, his better days are past him.

There’s no denying Gilmour is a wonderful guitarist but he’s no songwriter and his wife’s lyrics who seems to wrote most of his lyrics for him are utter garbage, guess it’s an incredibly high bar when Waters wrote most of the incredible songs he’s had the honour of playing on but as a solo artist I think he’s mediocre at best and that’s due to the rubbish lyrics

Big fan of Gilmour but what has happened to his singing style? Always love his guitar playing and his voice but the melancholy vocal style for songs like this one, Take a Breath, Faces of Stone, In Any Tongue, and Today are not suiting nor soothing. His voice on these tunes is a mix of too monotone, over expressive, downtrodden, depressing, and the lyrics seem a bit too awkward to sing.

I can agree to that. I like his voice and approach now but I guess he's trying new things that doesn't have to fit into a Floyd format. Maybe it's also easier for him to sing that way now, technically. I'm wondering though if there is some treatment to his voice. Especially on the chorus.
