Well, after watching your takes on the new Gilmour's album, I finally sat down and listened it for myself. And... I LOVE IT! I don't know what it is as the theme from Rattle That Lock seems to be continuing here (and it's not my favorite album), but it somehow works now. I can't stop listening to the three released songs and just play them in a loop :) "Between Two Points" is an absolute gem.
Say what you want about Waters but his genius is as a lyricist and conceptual thinker. David's gift is his musicality and guitar prowess. Together they filled-in each other's weaknesses and apart it is glaringly obvious what each of them lacks. Polly does her best to fill in for Roger but it just hasn't worked IMHO.
I don‘t think Gilmour wants to creat works of art, maybe he just wants to enjoy his life in an old age with his family through the music.Maybe he can not make good music like before, and doesn’t even care about the results anymore. He just enjoys the process.
I think Brian Eno said it best: "If I'd followed your advice in the first place I'd never have got anywhere." The fact that Pink Floyd’s sound is often described as a certain formula is a large part of why Gilmour retired the name.
As someone who is a huge Gilmour fan who very openly supports him as a solo artist, I gotta admit, that this song hasn’t really wowed me YET. But that might change in the future. Regardless, I am really excited to hear the full album, and I can’t wait to see him live in Rome at the end of September. Paid a lot of money for the tickets back in May, and I am sure it will be a fantastic concert, regardless of how the album turns out. And yeah, people who don’t enjoy his new music, should just listen to something else instead of complaining.
I was fortunate to see David on his 1984 “About Face” tour and twice with Pink Floyd in 1987 “Momentary Lapse of Reason” tour. His first solo album was his best (imo) and “About Face” was pretty good, but nothing since has been as inspiring, to me. “Mihalis” and “Terminal Frost” are my fave DG/PF songs, and the direction I wish he had followed. As for albums: DSOTM is the best album ever made, WYWH, Animals, and DG1 all stand as the greatest/most inspired body of works to me. (Richard Wright’s “Wet Dream” also stands in my pantheon of greatest music ever made, clearly showcasing his contributions to Pink Floyd.) The saddest truth is that David and Roger were far better together (musically), than individually, and we’ll never know what could have been, had Roger been able to contain himself. As far as people saying David should quit playing and recording, I say “who the hell do you think you are?” and “F#*k Off”!
When it comes to appreciation of art you can never be overly negative, nor overly positive for that matter. Each experience is personal and unique to that person and they should always be free to review exactly as they feel. They may even after a certain change their opinion. And that is of course perfectly fine too. For this track thought I'm the same: I really liked the first 2 singles but this one is a bit "business as usual" but that's not, as Bjorn says so late in David's career, a bad nor unexpected thing.
I listened to the new songs multiple times and they have grown on me. I ordered the Amazon exclusive cd with the alternate cover. Looking forward to the rest of the songs. Love him with the Gibson 335.👍
Gilmour is everything to me, but I do agree with you completely- I just hope he’s still got it when preforming pink Floyd classics when he tours again 🤞🏼
Well I'm coming all the way from Australia with my 2 son's to see him in Rome cause I said to my eldest son that you'll never have the chance to see him again. Just like when I took him to see Ronnie James Dio I'm so glad I took him....All the great Muso's of our time are getting older.
Hey I’m totally agree with you Björn ! I think exactly the same on this track and on his rattle that lock inspiration. Wait and see the others songs … 🙏
Hej! Thanks for your review. Will again travel to the RAH seeing the Oct 12th show. Guessing new ablum 1st set. Old songs 2nd set. Will be fantastic! Vi ses!
Ultimately it's his solo album - he can do whatever he wants and that's what he's doing. My favourite DG album is "On an Island" and I just wish he explored more that sound - but what can we do 🤷 btw the verses of this song would have been much better if he sang them with his "Young Lust" voice, even though I'm not sure he can do it anymore at his advanced age.
@@olivarionline it was meant as a little fun debate comment. Sorry, maybe relax, throw some gilmour on, smoke a spliff, then bang your partner, as i said peace✌️
The rattle that lock and this album, just go out to show how on an Island is his best piece of work as a solo artist. Maybe because of the people involved, like it always was. But i am glad he is still putting out music, and expressing himself.
I read Mark Knopler interview a few months back when his new solo album came out that he had recommended his producer to David. What I have heard so far from Luck and Strange sounds similar to Marks. It is a great "organic" sounding recording I recommend to everyone. So, with that, I expext the album to be very different and as non Floyd as it can sound. It will still be a great listen but as you stated his mind and mood have moved on. Looks like he is having fun making the record and I think that hearing something different from him this late in his carreer is pretty cool.
I love Knopfler's new album and the textures used to create and support the melody. The same goes for "Rattle That Lock" and the 3 songs from Gilmour's new album.really is inspirational vecause he created what moved him. Like Knopfler, David doesn't stick to a formula and that suits me just fine because I really like the music.
Rattle That Lock and Endless River received similar comments: "This sounds like they pieced together unfinished songs." Yep, and that's how...most of the Pink Floyd catalog was written, especially their most successful albums. And The Beatles. And much of modern music, and further back.
I’m a huge fan of Gilmour. I have a black strat in his honor. But I’ve not really liked much after The Wall. As much as I dislike Waters as a person, it seems as if the 2 of them together made great music. I’ll say the same as others, if Gilmour is happy, that’s all that matters. He doesn’t owe us anything.
On An Island is by far his best solo single, and solo album as a whole, in my opinion. I also was very disappointed by his last album. In Any Tongue, Today, and Faces of Stone weren't very likeable at all. After hearing these 3 new singles I'm kinda worried this will disappoint again.
My friend, I totally agree with you. Gilmour is still my favorite artist but I think he is too old to even getting close to the things he did when he was younger. It’s simply physiological.
I think you are a little harsh on Rattle That Lock, I'm not a fan of some of the jazz songs but the In Any Tongue solo stands up there with some of his best stuff imho and I love playing it myself. But I guess that's one song in isolation
I really love the slow bridge part in Dark and Velvet Nights, choruses in Piper's Call and the overall vibe of Between Two Points. I really like the solo in Between Two Points as well, it sounds very raw and spontaneous to me. After reading some articles and rewiews I'm looking forward to the song Scattered. I have a feeling I will probably enjoy this album more than Rattle That Lock, which has its lovely moments but somehow sounds to me as it was made in a rush. I'm going to see 3 shows of the upcoming tour, I'm really tired of waiting at this point :D
I am anxiously awaiting the release of the rest of the album. Like you said he is 78 years old, doing what he loves. I wasn’t impressed with the 3rd single, it sounds like a wonder. Never really comes together. But nonetheless I will move past it. The other 2 tracks I enjoy. I am honestly used to Polly’s influence now in his lyrics. I mean she has been doing it since The Division Bell. I definitely love his tones thus far, hoping to hear more new tones. I like that he is experimenting with that. I didn’t see him on Rattled That Lock tour and probably will not on this one either.
Huge lifelong DG fan, and I have only really liked about 4 or 5 of his 21st century songs. Honestly, he just doesn’t have much to say to me anymore musically or artistically, so I have moved on. DG and About Face still hit my rotation before I even bother with OAI or anything after that.
I got into David through first hearing a momentary lapse of reason, one of his best albums in my opinion next would be the division bell and on an island. On an island is one of his best solo albums as fat as the songs and guitar. I think now he plays more bb king like in his solos and less pycadelic. Don't know the producer but, I look foward to the live recording of one of his shows.
It’s a grower but I enjoy it. Roger’s last album of new material was horrible and it was devoid of guitar pyrotechnics and was minimalistic via Radiohead’s producer Nigel Godrich. I even found Amused to Death self indulgent. I listen to KAOS the most especially stripped of the dialogue.
As for David Gilmour stating that this is his best work since Dark Side I would find it hard to agree with him from what I have heard so far. The videos are informative and interesting to watch but what I have heard to date sounds too much like 'Today' from RTL and his solos just 'lack...' On the other hand I am really looking forward to the release of the album as I have been a huge fan of his playing since the early 70's but I am too long in the trenches to think that everything he does is fantastic or brilliant.
Right, "too long in the trenches", that´s what separates me from many of the praise givers here. They are so moved by the fact that he´s still releasing music having this great catalogue, but I don´t buy it.
Just listened to the song for the first time. It's OK, but a bit uninspired. It lacks build up / tension & dynamics on first impression if that makes sense. It's mostly one speed tempo. Having said that it might work in the context of the other songs. It does sound like a continuation of his last album which I like some of. I'm glad Dave is still at it & I think he likely captured what he was trying to do on this song. Bjorn, I will look to you to make your own Wish You Were Here / Darkside of the Moon styled album, how about a Fleeting Glimpse Part two?
Yeah, Dark and Velvet Nights is uninteresting song for me. Between Two Points and The Piper's Call sound way better. I am a guitar player and love Gilmour's work in general.
Overall they are all very nice songs but far from excellence, which it’s been reached on “rattle that lock” in my opinion. Look forward to hearing your review of the new album. I’ll be in Rome on October 3rd 🎸🪄
Why be judgemental? Choice is upto us whether we want to listen or not, right? As far as David is concerned, it appears that he's enjoying every moment during the making of this album. At 78 for obvious reasons, one can't expect him to do heavy lengthy solos. I however liked Dark velvet nights song, very catchy number. Looking fwd to seeing him play live in Rome
I agree with your assessment. It has been my least favorite of the three singles. But I just listened to it again after your review, and I kind of liked it more. The guitar tones are really great. I still have “high hopes” for the rest of the album. And I cannot wait to see him in NYC since I have never seen him live before. I suspect this may be his last tour and major album, but who knows.
I think the sound production is great with a nice vibe and restrained leads, but it’s missing a bit of cohesiveness that made Floyd songs such a journey. That intro section could have been used again between main verses and the bridge part- which as beautiful as it is on its own - sounds a little out of place. Happy to see the joy and authenticity. Just my opinion and looking forward to the fresh sounds and love show.
I totaly agree with you Bjorn. New songs just don't have the spark and freshness they need. Some part and bits are interesting, but I can hardly listen till the end with attention and interest I as used to listed to David music in past. These new songs are overall borring. These days I much rather listen to Steve Hackett new album The Circus and the Nightwhale. That really left me with my mouth wide open... Cheers
As another huge Gilmour fan, going back to the mid 80s, I'm not overly impressed with any of the three new songs. I'm glad he's having fun, nothing at all wrong with that, and if he's enjoying his time recording, great. I'll still buy the album and I've got tickets to his third show in NYC in November, which I'm really looking forward to. He's put in his time and I don't begrudge him putting out the music he wants.
After having listened to the song several times, I must say I didn't like it to much. There's too much vocals ( it's excessively sung... ) and I deeply miss Gilmour's ethereal ambience here. I also think the rhythmic structure a little bit like several "Division Bell"s songs - an album I really don't like... I would like to have listened to more guitar solos on it, and not only in the end. No doubt, the choice for the semi-hollow Gibson was very good and innovative when it comes to David, and the solo is really great ( of course, it's Gilmour ! ). I never had seen David playing on a Gibson like that, and I've been a great Gilmour's fan for more than 50 years ( I'm a solo guitarist and composer too, but only instrumental ). But from these 3 previouly released songs, the one I like the most is just that sung by Romany. I think more opportunity should be given to her on the album, on the lead vocals. And this would really be a great innovation, but it seems on the entire album she only sings the lead on 'Between Two Points'... So, initially, before listening to the whole album, that's what I think... Maybe David's choice for a new producer wasn't the best...
You found the exact "problem". David dt try to make a nice album for us,he wants to be happy for himself. He said that this new producer told him to end the songs and the solos ,and not to fade them like David always did. Its not a Floyd method... the fade is the basis of the long live solos. Your analysis is so true, he is not 30 years old, he cant/dt want to make Dark side or Animals again...
Could you tell me what you didn’t like about Rattle That Lock? Because that is my favorite Gilmour album. Songs like Faces of Stone and In Any Tongue to me are beautifully written songs with tons of great emotion. Today and the title track have some great energy, and songs like Dancing Right in Front of Me and The Girl in the Yellow Dress are really nice soothing jazz songs. And then of course there is the amazing instrumental Beauty. To me, the album showcases a nice pallet of Gilmour’s songwriting. What exactly do you not like about it? Did the songs just not click with you, or do you just dislike the songs in general?
Yes, I think you are too negative. But recently it made klick and I got who you are, the guitarist of Airbag, I love your work, how can I get in touch with you, Mr. Gilmourish
La canzone nemmeno a me piace ,meglio the pipers call e beetween two point
It’s a gilmour song without the influence of the biggest part of his career , its over produced and every single space is filled with something and there’s nearly place to take a breath IMO
Just wait for black cat, a single spark, luck and strange and scattered All these will have the Floyd vibes you're waiting for and then your opinion will change 😅
I’m not massively keen on any of his new songs. I think I’m a tad bored with Polly’s lyrics too. Agree with you that the opening of the song was really cool, but everything after that is a bit meh I did like some of Rattle That Lock though.
I wasn't impressed by the EP "Yes, I have ghosts", either. I'm afraid Gilmour goes the same direction as Knopfler: master guitarists back in the day, but these men are getting older and now tend to make sleepy music.... The last few Knopfler albums were a lot of mumbling and 'middle of the road' tunes...
Again too much Samsoned lyrics which require at least a BA degree in Literature to fully understand what SHE means to tell in this song…at least to me as a non-native 🇬🇧 speaker.
Its Ok song for me, I had to give it like 4 listens until I catch on to the melody, hovewer it has that sort of cheap groovy feel to it, like a younger sibling of Rattle that lock, so i dont expect myself to revisit that song. Between three singles I find Dark and Velvet nights certainly as the weakest one
For me, the David Gilmour we know has said goodbye to us definitively with songs like faces of stone / in Any tongue. In 2015. This new look just doesn't belong to me, sorry..
re: concert tickets - at least for NYC there were only two shows announced so we all bought feverishly then he added three more shows within hours of the initial sale watering down the attendance. Feeling like I am left holding a Wednesday ticket when I would have chosen weekend coming from out of state. I think these shows are going to be sparsely attended
This song needs to be listened till getting the point. Musically is just great. Not a sugary taky cheese pop song that enters at the first try. The bridge is great. The harmony is great. Lyrics are absolutely amazing. For poppy songs and lyrics, try Wham.
I'm not looking forward to the new album AT ALL. I'll probably still give it a listen, but I quite honestly just couldn't really care less. Sadly, David has gotten a bit boring. I'd much rather have a new Roger Waters album.
Roger will just put another record that sounds like a watered down Final Cut featuring so shittier versions of other Floyd songs. Like his last record had shitty copies of Mother, Have a cigar and pigs. Also saying you couldn’t care less but clicking onto this video and commenting is a hilarious contradiction.
There is not much to add, Bjorn. It is a bad song, it goes nowhere. The only good thing, as always with DG, is tone. Not that we should really be surprised. Waters is no player; and Gilmour is no songwriter.
100% the track is a total mess. It doesn't go anywhere and sounds like they just lost their way with the production. Love love Gilmour, but his solo output has been patchy at best. On An Island was ok, a couple nice things on Rattle, but this new stuff is pretty dire to my ears. But to balance it, he's clearly doing what he wants and that's great, just feels like he's trying too hard to do the opposite of Floyd
Comparing the 80s and 90s David Gilmour, this songs sounds total garbage....but, i have sort of come to terms mostly out of respect for the artist, David himself, that he does what he wants, i will listen, if i like it i will listen again, if not then well i wont.!!
I do wish that people would simply acknowledge that Gilmour is nothing to write home about, at all, without Waters and vice versa. Remember, ,Gilmour wrote absolutely nothing (i.e. from developing an idea from scratch) from after WYWH to the end of the Waters version of PF. I’d go so far to say that he possesses no real individual inspiration at all. He’s a good guitarist and music arranger but simply not a songwriter.
Could you tell me what you didn’t like about Rattle That Lock? Because that is my favorite Gilmour album. Totally agree with everything you said with the exception of The Girl In the Yellow Dress! That one track was absolute shite and I think Gilmour didn't rate it that much as when he toured he dropped it from the live set.
I loved it as well. The only song I didn't dig was Dancing Right in Front of Me, but it's still a great album as a whole. I regularly like playing 5AM and jamming to Today. I don't get the dislike from many Gilmour fans.
Well, after watching your takes on the new Gilmour's album, I finally sat down and listened it for myself. And... I LOVE IT! Between two points is fabulous. I first heard dark velvet but I fell even harder for between two points. Good stuff…
You’re not negative, you’re realistic and honest.

The time is gone, the song is over - it’s been over way too long ago. But the early albums will live for 50 to 70 years more- easily.

You need to let go....David is an artist on his own..nothing to do with floyd. I personaly love it...
When Gilmour took over the band Pink Floyd became Brown Floyd and there was never any need to ask, "which one's Brown?"
Everything passes, everything gets finished
the extremum of a person's creative abilities is in the young years of the life period

As for David Gilmour stating that this is his best work since Dark Side I would find it hard to agree with him from what I have heard so far. The videos are informative and interesting to watch but what I have heard to date sounds too much like 'Today' from RTL and his solos just 'lack...'
On the other hand I am really looking forward to the release of the album as I have been a huge fan of his playing since the early 70's but I am too long in the trenches to think that everything he does is fantastic or brilliant.
Right, "too long in the trenches", that´s what separates me from many of the praise givers here. They are so moved by the fact that he´s still releasing music having this great catalogue, but I don´t buy it.
I agree 👍
Not really a fan of Polly lyrics generally (Charlie’s are great!) but I liked these. 🤔
Very good track!
Has his wife done the lyrics to this album as well?
Gilmour hasn't slipped a bit and is still play guitar as good as ever....what a bizarre thing to insinuate he has become anything less.
Cheers
Also, are you going to any of his shows Bjorn?
I liked the first 2 songs Piper and Between two points but I don’t like this one at all.
Still looking forward to hearing the album though.
After RTL I have no expectation at all.
I love Gilmour, but I haven't been able to listen to any of his solo albums beyond his first one in 1978. About Face has a few good tunes as well.
I may be behind… when did Gilmore drop the strat that gave that Gilmore sound? That guitar tone is completely different than his signature.
…. and yet that solo is very obviously David Gilmour. It really couldn’t be anybody else.
Its true
Yes, I think you are too negative. But recently it made klick and I got who you are, the guitarist of Airbag, I love your work, how can I get in touch with you, Mr. Gilmourish
Thanks for your kind words! Look me up on FB or Instagram.
On an island is the last Gilmour album I bought. Nuff said.
La canzone nemmeno a me piace ,meglio the pipers call e beetween two point
Agreed
It’s a gilmour song without the influence of the biggest part of his career , its over produced and every single space is filled with something and there’s nearly place to take a breath IMO
Just wait for black cat, a single spark, luck and strange and scattered
All these will have the Floyd vibes you're waiting for and then your opinion will change 😅
He's 78
I’m not massively keen on any of his new songs. I think I’m a tad bored with Polly’s lyrics too. Agree with you that the opening of the song was really cool, but everything after that is a bit meh
I did like some of Rattle That Lock though.
No, you’re not overy negative.
So far, I've liked the three singles, but they've left me feeling underwhelmed.
I’m not massively keen on any of his new songs. I think I’m a tad bored with Polly’s lyrics too.
I did like some of Rattle That Lock though.
After these three songs I dont have much hope the album will be any good. Too many strings, weak lyrics, lifeless drums, unnecessary kids involvement.
I agree, the drums aren't all that special. Same with the lyrics.
Who cares man ?
I have always loved Gilmour, but the last good song for me was Take a Breath.
@@VrilYa100 ah really? The Rattle That Lock album had some jewels like the title song, faces of stone, and In any tongue
Again too much Samsoned lyrics which require at least a BA degree in Literature to fully understand what SHE means to tell in this song…at least to me as a non-native 🇬🇧 speaker.
I have to listen to it more yet, but does this mean you’re buying a 335 Björn? 😅
Not the same as the usual David Gilmour.
re: concert tickets - at least for NYC there were only two shows announced so we all bought feverishly then he added three more shows within hours of the initial sale watering down the attendance. Feeling like I am left holding a Wednesday ticket when I would have chosen weekend coming from out of state. I think these shows are going to be sparsely attended
I would rather he just made an instrumental album, I will not be purchasing this as its pretty garbage really
This song needs to be listened till getting the point. Musically is just great. Not a sugary taky cheese pop song that enters at the first try. The bridge is great. The harmony is great. Lyrics are absolutely amazing. For poppy songs and lyrics, try Wham.
Not a fan of what hes doing now. Yeah just a repeat what he did before
I'm not looking forward to the new album AT ALL.
@@kjek1 oh a hilarious contradiction… you got me, man! 1000 gold stars for you!
As with most bands, their solo stuff is dull
The song is very poor. Lyrics are terrible. The second dong was ok.
I don't care about any new Gilmour's entries after he sent ukranians to die with his "last Pink Floyd" single. A warmonger.
